Title: SS Default Popular in Portfolio
Post by: Pixart on February 19, 2016, 13:58
How the heck do they define "popular"?  This is my default popular on SS.  I clicked through from the contributor site and was quite surprized, and then checked again after doing a "Hockey Kid" search and it's the same.  (But the "see all hockey kid photos from" my port is a nice touch.

A common theme seems to be that they are mostly lower leg shots with no faces.  Why would photos that might have sold a half dozen times (and not even recently) be ranked as popular?   I have other photos that have sold hundreds or thousands of times.  Wouldn't that be a more accurate definition of popular?

How SS popular images works is a mystery to me. If I search for "white grapes", one of my images is on the first page (7th line) of "popular", and it was downloaded only about 11 or 12 times. I uploaded it about 6 months ago.

Dumc, do you have images with more downloads that are not showing in the first page along with that one? For example, an image with much more downloads but is on the second, third pages...

I have no idea why some of my images are on the first page when they have not been downloaded that much. It will remain a mystery ...

Old question, new theories...

Popular is a relation between downloads and how old image is (time that image is online).

But anyway, sometimes you upload a new images, and without any download or with just one or two, you can see this image being more popular that others with a lot of donwloads.

So; popular is a relation between donwloads and how old image is... and something more...

Popular remains a mystery. In my case, sometimes my new uploads shows in 1st page in popular (by using my top 5 keywords in that image) within a days only and then sales comes. But most of my top selling images are not shown in popular

Popularity is not determined by total downloads as far as I can tell. It seems to be based on a number of factors like number of downloads during a specific time period (ie: month) and possibility number of views.

we know as much about this as getting to the top of a google listing

I can't find where I read it but shutterstock several years back said (they were spruiking how marvelous their technology was) that it's based on lots of stuff: the keyword searched for, the geographic location of the searcher, the history of sales (incl change rate / recency of them I would guess?) for that keyword and in that geographic location, the number of "hover overs" and clicks to view the full image.
