Title: SS Entry Application
Post by: trofia on January 19, 2012, 07:25
Hi All,

I am about to try the initial 10 pics submission at SS. I am currently exclusive with DT but decided spread my wings.

I already tried the test several times over a year ago but did not succeed.
Once I went close with 6 out of 10 approved! Of course now I am a much better photographer and have 100s approved on DT.

Do you think is a good idea to submit 10 images already approved by another agency? Who is tougher, SS or DT? Did SS became stricter in the last year? Can I submit editorial and images with logos for the initial test?

A lot of questions...please give me some idea and answer!

Thanks!

donīt have much to say unless you havenīt you tried it before?

donīt know if you can submit editorial on the entry application, I would say pick your best 10, show what your are up to, different stuff from isolations, people, concepts, etc, you can of course submit the pictures you have on DT, you are going ind so no point of not sending

regarding approval ratio at SS vs DT, I believe DT is a lot pickier, at least lately with the not what we are looking for and similar stuff, perhaps not much on exclusives

good luck!

I would have thought if you already have 100s approved at DT you should be fine getting accepted at SS. Just choose a good variety from your best. I got approved at SS quite recently and to be honest I thought it would be much harder than it was. For me now I feel that these 2 agencies are both about the same as far as approval rates go - as mentioned above, DT are just a little more picky about similars. I don't think it's that hard - you just have to make sure you have a good subject and decent focus and lighting. Getting high sales of course isn't so easy!

thanks guys,

I appreciate your support.

Yes, I have tried over one year ago, when I was a total beginner and got rejected 3'4 times, once I went very close acceptance tough. My concern was if they got tougher or changed application rules in the last year and half...
In the last year I improved a lot and uploaded hundreds of pics on DT, but the majority of them are editorials. So I don't know if is the case to submit images of Eifel Tower of Coliseum for the review. Also, how about food on white background? Is that fine?ųFor sure I am not going to send brands, logos or faces...

I'd say SS is the toughest when it comes to inspections. Not that I would say, I'm sure of it. DT is just so easy to have constant 100% approvals, here are my stats for the last 6 months at DT (there's no such option at SS, but I guess it's around 90%, like at IS which is also pretty tough, a bit less than SS lately though)

Chances are that whatever you have at DT maybe just maybe 50% would make the cut at SS!

So if you really want to know start a thread in the Critique / Tips / Tricks forum and let me and a few others have a look at them and if you can get past us you stand a pretty good chance. {:o)

luissantos84 knows what i mean. {:o)

I don't find SS any more picky than DT but I do have a sense that they are more open to subject matter that's not already massively covered.  10 shots with good focus and brightly lit showing something slightly different would get you in.

Keep it simple- You have the 6 pics that SS approved thus add in four of what you consider your best- no flaws and have commercial value. Don't take a chance with 10 new pics. Use the six proven ones - like money in the bank that you can count on. Than you only need one out of four to make the club...

There is nothing that helps a picture to get in onto shutterstock as good creative innovative content.

An ugly girl with headsets smeared with liver paste on a semi grey background is not going to make it.

She needs to be a red indian with feathers and all.... and beautiful also, in a new way.

And if you submit what one reviewer liked another may find something else to reject it for so it is best to submit a new ten.

Totally agree and SS even recommends this.
