SS don't allow both the singular and plural form of a keyword when submitting images. When searching for images, if I search singular and then plural I get the same total number of results but the images found are ranked in different order. I don't understand why this is so.

For example, a particular image includes the keyword "concept". If I search for "concept" (along with another word) the image appears around 7th place in the results but if I search for "concepts" (along with the same other word) it appears below 30th.

Anyone any thoughts on this? Is it best always to opt for the singular to get better ranking in results?

I think thats a flawed search query to determine anything.

Search concept and concepts and then look again, its the exact same. You can see the similar keywords used by SS.

Concept and another word, and concepts and another word might have a completely different result, based on how images are keyworded as you are now using a phrase instead of a single word.

By the way, concept flower, and concepts flower also shows the same result.

Thanks for your response Ron but I'm still puzzled. I think it might be linked to which web browser is used.

I've just tried a search on Shutterstock for "flower" and then "flowers" using the top three browsers - Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. All produce the same number of results for "flower" and "flowers" but they differ as to the sequence of images.

On Internet Explorer the sequence of images is identical for both "flower" and "flowers" (and for the search words tried previously). On Firefox and Chrome they are different. And all three produce different sequences from each other for the same word.

Since Chrome seems to be the most popular browser at present, followed by Firefox it would seem that the use of singular or plural in searches on SS is going to yield different results for many people ... and presumably there's nothing we can do about it in our keywording.

The problem might be that they are tracking you and trying to feed you the results they think are appropriate. You probably have different tracking info on different browsers so they send you different search order.

SS don't allow both the singular and plural form of a keyword when submitting images.

Is this a new thing. I used to have pictures there back in the early days and IIRC plurals were encouraged.

Since I like to keep my IPTC keywording up to date (and my options open etc) - does anyone have a good link to the current key wording standards at SS ? Cheers.

Its been like that for at least 2 years. Plural and singular are considered duplicate and one of them will be automatically removed.
