Title: Sudden Sales?
Post by: Pixart on July 27, 2010, 11:04
Strange thing, one of my old photos is selling pretty well for a couple weeks.  I checked to see if it is featured on the front page - nope.  I had a freebie of the week end June, but it didn't bump the sales of this particular photo during that period.

I just wonder - can it be featured somewhere other than on their main page?  How can it be getting all this attention?  Or has some search change returned decent sellers to the front?  I'm not sure if it's a great seller, but it's had over 700 sales on SS and I think it sold virtually every day for the first year.  Funny, it sold for $31 on FT this week too and a couple little sales on other sites.  My best earner this month is such an oldie.

It also goes to remind me that if you capture a nature/animal/wildlife photo that "sticks" it is timeless and can sell very well for a long time.  It's getting them to stick and not die that is the tricky part :)

Pixart, I've wondered similar thing, and I'm hoping someone has more insight into it than you and I do.  :)  (Recently it happened with photos of lighthouse, marshland, but no $31 sales, alas.)

A particular photo or a few photos on same subject will have burst of sales, usually on SS, DT, and 123. Or a strong seller that went a bit quiet will suddenly get multiple sales on them. (I'm on 5 micros, but ISP and F aren't part of this.) Except for those holiday related, I don't even have guess why it happens.

Yes, it happens at times.

As sales occur at different sites, I would rule out search engine changes.

There may be a correlation with current events?

Or just our tendency to find patterns in actually random statistical data?

That's a good point, especially since we wouldn't tend to "notice" when different images are dl'd from variety of sites, but we probably would when the same ones are.

For ex, I find it interesting that, though I had a variety of photos DL'd today, they included the same lighthouse and same marshland photo at two sites and a lighthouse at another.  (I originally posted I had dls of same 2 photos from 3 sites, but then realized I was wrong, so this is a sad, weak example.)  :-[

Not complaining  :D but it's so old and it sold 7 times today 5 yesterday 5 Sunday etc., whereas it had only sold a couple times over the first two weeks of the month.  Not OMG 2000 sales, but I was just wondering if SS can be featuring it somewhere off the landing page, or else they may have changed search again?   If noone else has noticed change I'll just enjoy while it lasts.

I've found the same thing this week - an image submitted about a year ago, that had only sold once before, has sold eight times in the past few days! It's not in any of the featured lightboxes, so I don't know why it should suddenly start selling. Maybe it's related to a news event or something, but I'm struggling to think what it might be - it's just a photo of an old pier.

To follow up:  I did find the photo on their front page rotation after all.  Gave a nice little bump to sales.  Back to normal now though.
