..I forgot to mention. Get as many images on as you can now, because as well as new images getting more exposure, new photographers do too. I had so many sales in my first few months from a handful of images, including my first EL from any site.
this is very interesting to learn..
in less then a week of my acceptance into shutterstock, ive seen sales everyday.. which for me is not what im used to at DT and Fotolia.  im lucky if i get a sale a week elsewhere (with about only 100 images online)

If your images are getting accepted at one agency and not at another agency, it is a sign that you are not shooting 'hot' microstock images, you are shooting mediocre microstock images.

I have to disagree here... Some times that is caused just by stupid reviewers/inspectors (or whatever they want to be called)

True.. It is happening to me at DT.. All agencies (IS, FT, SS, whatever..) are approving all my latest work, only DT is rejecting because they are asking for 5 or 6 objects/subjects on the same picture..

where i fall short is in understanding lighting.

Microstock sites tend to prefer light and colorful images over the dark desaturated murky ones. They also don't like dark/hard shadows or very much contrast in general.

They don't like to many highlights either.

Something in my world has gotten all messed up.  FT is approving photos and SS is refusing them using language that I haven't heard since I submitted to Istock...  Have IS reviewers been let go and moved on to SS?  Alas, I scratch my head and move on, resolving not to submit any more from this series for at least 2 weeks and maybe I'll get one of their old reviewers.

Pixart,
the confusing and frustrating part is that submitted in separate batches, you are likely to get one batch from the series accepted and the other rejected.  I think it leaves Everyone scratching their head.

but... SS is certainly good at getting those accepted images before the buyers .... and selling them.   ;D

It seems that Istock buyers are moving to SS, so why not reviewers too?  ;)

With SS and BigStock getting all the same reviewers maybe some have been moved or merged into the department?

I'd be unhappy if I got reviews like I was getting at FT or DT.

First of all kudos on your acceptance. I am an illustrator and SS must be more leniant there as i was accepted first try. I cannot take a decent photo to save my life so I am in awe of great photography and photographers.

Secondly, I have said this in another post as well. IMO SS is a beast that needs to be fed, more so than other sites. My first 3 months on SS I made payout every month, now it takes 2-3 months to reach payout. New uploads do very well as I think subscribers try and download their 25 a day using the "newest first" sort. I have not uploaded much to SS (or anywhere else for that matter) since May, and it is reflected in my slower sales.

Good luck to you. You should put your links into your profile so we can see your stuff.

I have been experiencing something at SS latelly that seldom happened to me before: Photos rejected for "out of focus". This morning I had a batch reviewed, 5 of the photos rejected for out of focus. I checked them again at 100% view, there can be other reasons for rejection, but as far as focus goes, they are as sharp as can be. No shallow DoF either. Then there is one of the accepted photos in this batch where I had my doubts if it is indeed sharp enough and eventually I downsized and submitted, and it was approved! Perhaps a reviewer deciding on focus without even looking at 100% view, or not liking the photo and just hitting any reject button?

A while ago I made an experiment with SS, I submitted a batch of 20 photos, all previously rejected. The result, 100% accepted!

CCK - I have a horrible feeling that they aren't even looking at the photos full size right now unless they like the thumbs.  I started to post this earlier but decided I would look like a lunatic (and honestly these dance photos don't sell horribly well anyway so why get worked up about it).

Focus:

If you look at it this size, it looks like her front foot might be in focus and maybe she isn't . But if you look at the photo almost everything is IN focus (yes, her eyes!) EXCEPT her front foot.  Did they look at the full size photo?

Rough Edges:

Yes, looks like her costume has rough edges at THIS size - but if they would open up the photo they'd see it is in tatters and those edges are the ruffly bits.  Did they look at the full size photo?  I've never had a rough edges reject at SS before.

I wondered if the focus reject has something to do with cropping?

There is a very well know reviewer at BS who has bragged many times on SS that he can see noise in thumbnails.

I think the majority of reviewers look at images at mid and then full size if they believe they need to reject an image.

However there are reviewers who are strictly going for the numbers to make money and they do not take the time for images to load at full size because that would cut into their profits.

and at the sixth time... approved!

After reading your suggestions and waiting for a new chance, this time I became approved as a submitter. The different thing I have done this time has been resizing the images to the minimum one required.

So good luck to the ones that are still looking for the approval.

Upload everything you have like a madman, including things that may have been rejected with your applications. You have a big, big boost for at least the first month and will make great sales. Don't wait, upload now!

I keep imagining someone who has a collection of 200 files that's new at SS, uploads them all... and how they could probably make more in the first three months than they will in the next nine.
