Hi Guys,

Since January, I keep getting very, very low comissions video sales (less than 1$) on SS. Last year it was normal, with 10$+ for the video. Is there any explenation for that? I know I am reduced to Level 1, but still, less than 1$ for a footage is not what I was used to previous years. Something has changes, did I miss something?

Thanks

IT seems they've started moving more and more onto much cheaper subscription and streaming sales.

Ive gone from a lifetime average RPD of $21 a video to $5.30 in January.  A 75% decrease.  The drop from level 3 to level 1 alone doesn't come close to explaining that.

February is even worse where im getting plenty of sales for under $1 and my BEST is $2.67

The problem isnt the level cut - its buyers are now paying a lot less for the product in the first place.

Opt-out!  I did and even removed thousands of clips! SS and video is a totally pointless excercise!

Opt out. Don't damage your much higher sales agencies if you are on those. Staying at Shutterstock will only encourage those to follow the same track. A few dollars made at Shitterstock are not worth it.

I think there's an obvious consensus of what to do about low return for video work submitted to Shutterstock.

Strange, some people still resist to see what's going on. I sell video on P5 on average 35$.

Strange, some people still resist to see what's going on. I sell video on P5 on average 35$.

So do a lot of us but that doesn't affect the basic fact that many people got a LOT more sales on SS (and elsewhere) than P5 which brought in substantially more money.

My average monthly income from SS video last year (and previous years) is 5x what P5 brought in the same month with same videos.  AS roughly 3x P5.

Doesn't matter if you get paid higher per download if the number of downloads is drastically lower.

There always a problem of low sales in the beginning of the year. Wait 1 or 2 months, if your situation doesn't improve stop working with them.

Pond 5 sells a little, because with your help SS sells for nothing. Think long term. SS crashes prices.

Numbers are numbers.

For myself and others, until last month SS simply sold more video than elsewhere.  It paid less but sold a lot more.
Last month for the first time in 11-12 years that stopped and the reduction was instant, massive and it shot down the league table.

Same thing for me gnirtS

I wish I could quit Shutterstock, but looking at my numbers at Pond5 and AdobeS, that would be the end of me in this business.
January with only 15% comission SS made me 3x what P5 did. Normally its 5x(+).

I did quit Istock and Storyblocks at the time, for the same reasons, but unfortunately I cant afford to do the same with Shutterstock.

We'll see many contributors disabling video portfolio at Shutterstock this year.  That'll hopefully cause big video buyers to stop buying from Shutterstock and use Adobe Stock and Pond5 instead.

Which unfortunately will change nothing as long as the buyers can find what they need on SS. I don't contribute video to SS, I stopped when the $1.29 sales started coming in.

Anyone who's still making money, see above, isn't going to delete their video, are they? I mean do you actually believe think the contributors can force the customers to another agency? Or that anything will change?

If Shutterstock ends up having 1/2 video contributors as P5 or AdobeStock, it'll be very bad for Shutterstock.  Buyers will leave Shutterstock too.

This might go some way to explaining videos.  SS are really really trying to force people onto subscriptions.
You add a clip to a basket, it pops up a box saying "Why not subscribe" with the link to refuse in tiny writing below.
Clicking that you get another huge screen advertising subscriptions or below that packs.  The link to just buy an image isnt a link at all - you can only do that by clicking on checkout.

They really do seem to want to get everyone possible onto subscriptions.  And on those, the most we can expect to get for a clip is $10 on the most expensive package.  The others will be below that.

The way the pricing is, its better for a person to get a one off monthly subscription then cancel than to buy a clip pack or single image.

I've stopped uploading new fresh footage to SS, and I upload only on Pond5 Exclusive, so last three months Pond5 is my TOP earner, 2-3 times more than SS. Colleagues, think who you feed, look in long time perspective, what is the future... Don't feed the monster. Have business only with companies, who treat you fair and be happy :)

Good fair game plan, or business plan. Only work where you are happy with the results or treatment.

Everyone should be free to make their own choices, without badgering or group pressure.

I generally give AS/Alamy/P5 my stuff first and if nothing much happens on those i'll upload to SS a few months later.

What i am looking carefully at on SS is if my top selling clips start selling for a few dollars or cents as opposed to full price consistently then im deleting them as (i) they're worth more than that and (ii) i dont want it cannibalising from elsewhere.

Ive had a few clips that have made a few thousand dollars each that started selling endlessly for $<5 instead of the usual amounts.  Ive deleted those off SS.  Its small numbers *so far* but i'm not against pulling the entire port if/when that happens to more of them.  Ultimately the policy is forcing me to be selective - SS is getting the rejects from elsewhere and high performing clips get pulled.

Meanwhile for many of us, P5 although it pays a lot more sells far fewer videos than AS or SS.

Looking at last year, SS video made me roughly 5x what P5 did for the same video clips.
Every single month P5 yields many hundreds of dollars less income than the same content did on SS due to the bigger volume.

This year so far SS is a little below P5 but AS is 3x  that.

Im not going to stop uploading to SS and lost potentially 5x the money that P5 brings in for the same thing.

If that equation changes (and last month hinted it might) then i'll reconsider but it seems somewhat stupid to give up a large chunk of income, based entirely on principle with no means of recouping it elsewhere.

You do realise its possible to earn more than pennies?  Or lots of pennies?  Even with SS (up to now at least).

Struggling to see why i should deliberately make myself hundreds or thousands of dollars a month worse off, in the middle of a pandemic with no day-job work just on "principle".  How is that in any way sensible?

Do what you wanna do. I'm long enough in business and I do know that without principles my business would not survive. So, you can sell your work for pennies, it's your choice. Today I receive another mail from P5. Video clip sold for 107$. How much is it on SS? LOL. It is you killing this business, not SS.

And most of us know that randomly turning town a large chunk of money per month for no tangible gain at all helps nobody.
You keep harping on about P5 - great.  Most of us use them.
But the fact is they pay more but for most people sell a lot less. Suddenly stopping SS isnt going to make P5 sell 5x as many clips a month which is what would be needed.

It's so funny to read this epic "Oda to SS". :D It's not only P5 that makes great job, it's also Adobe. Not a single photo under 0,33 (0,40$) was sold. Ever. And P5 sells more as I opt out all my content on SS. That is THE logic. Yes, suddenly stopping SS is going to make others sell 5x. You just didn't realize that yet. Anyway, do whatever the f**k you wanna do and I wish you all the best with SS. :)

You're deluded if "not being on SS" suddenly makes other media say 5x better.  Simply isn't the case for anyone at all.

AS pulls in huge amounts more for the same video for me in terms of revenue than P5.  You think if i pull the stuff off AS P5s little sales will rocket?!

P5 "exclusive" gives you a bigger slicer of the cake.  It doesn't change search rankings or number of sales.

I'm pretty sure that $1 sales from SS combined with $35+ sales from P5... add up to more than just $35+ sales from P5. By an increase of roughly $1 if my maths is correct. But hey... happy 0$ clip sales at SS man!  ;D

You're missing the point. You may be selling 100 clips a month at Adobe, or 50 clips at Pond5, or $500 at iStock, or $75 per download at 123RF... but my point is... if you make $0.01 at SS per month, then you make more contributing to SS than if you don't.

Principles don't pay the bills. And while you can dispute that until the cows come home by saying 'my principles made me X dollars last month'... my principles made me X dollars last month... plus my SS earnings on top.

I really cant see the point of this.
Using example figures,

If i make $300 a month from AS and $150 a month from P5 but also $600 a month from SS, if i stop submitting to SS on "principle" i'll still be making $300 from AS, $150 from P5 but $0 from SS.

So im $600 down with no tangible benefit at all.

I've seen nothing to suggest stopping SS boosts sales elsewhere.

544$ on AD means 544 clips on SS for same amount. Which is almost impossible. Your math sucks man. ;) Another thing is that P5 sell for same price same clip if available somewhere else. Which means 1$. Yes, principles makes my money. ;)

If you still had content on SS then you would be making more money than you are currently... even if only one dollar more. Do you have any evidence to dispute that?

Another thing is that P5 sell for same price same clip if available somewhere else. Which means 1$.

They do do that for some site, but not SS. And even if they did, it would be $25 for HD and $50 for 4K... not $1. Kind of makes it hard to trust what you're saying when you don't even know the pricing minimums that P5 use.

Remember that in stock 1+1 is not always 2 as you point out. If you sell files at P5 and get a sale were you earn 40$ net that sale might have happen is you have the same file at SS. Buyers are very price conscious nowadays. All the corporate crap those business talk about the price does not matter to customers and its the experience at their site is bs and the main reason they keep competing on price.

There are not so many options on the video front and buyers can search in 5 minutes at the gig 4 and locate the file if it is there. Now if they subscribe at shutter you get your 1$ and loose 39. Not a winning proposition under my point of view.

Sure not every buyer does that but if only 1 in every 5 does that your stategy to be everywhere even if the practically give your videos for free is failing. it is ok when all the prices are at the same ballpark. Now they are not. Istock and SS pay nearly nothing almost most of the time for video content.

Everybody has to pick up their battlefield wisely.

yes, you're right but it happens that to make that 0,01$ sale on ss you lose that sale somewhere else where you get let's say 20$...so 0,01$ - 20$= -19,99$....to me it's not a great deal...btw i'm not saying ss is the evil, istock and unlimited subscription sites are much worse...

Everest, you are totally right with saying this:
#There are not so many options on the video front and buyers can search in 5 minutes at the gig 4 and locate the file if it is there. Now if they subscribe at shutter you get your 1$ and loose 39. Not a winning proposition under my point of view.#
AND!: #Buyers are very price conscious nowadays.#

I asked Pond5 for some information about different things and ONE they always repeat telling me - advised me: Have in mind, buyers looking around to try cheaper files.
Not like other agencies like Alamy or other contributor say, that buyers are to lazy to look around. That might were right in the past, but NOWADAYS for sure much more have to look for cheaper files.

The advice from Everest is only good as long our videos (images) have not many competition on SS. If there are to many competition, then it might be no matter where to upload. But as more not uploading good files to SS as more benefit.

This may seem like a good idea, in reality it is just short term thinking, SS are finished, it is just a matter of time, if you want to be undervalued and basically compete against yourself then carry on, but you are unfortunately wasting your time, and I mean this literally.

If you stop uploading your sales will gradually decrease, this is the way forward and out of the clutches of SS.

As far as I know many buyers look arond where they can get cheaper. And if they can buy you video for $1, of course they will. But when they need some content and can't get cheaper, they will buy it. So you can undercut your sales. That's why I upload new content on POND5 Exclusive and I see benefits from it.

Just unlicensed my video and photo portfolio on Shutterstock (again).  Moved all my editorials to Pond5 exclusive account to get 60% royalty, not $3 on 4k video sale on Shutterstock video sub.  I don't know if it's a coincidence, but already having the best sales day of February on Adobe Stock today.  It's likely to become the best sales day of the year on Adobe Stock at this pace.  Feeling good.  You can always turn your portfolio back on after a month on Shutterstock to see what happens and if it's worth it.

Pond5 has a system in place where if a client sees the same identical clip for a lower price elsewhere, P5 will equalize that price. Meaning if you have clips on both SS and P5, and someone sees that on P5 they can ask for the same pricing which is a massive discount.

So a clip worth 35 bucks on P5 suddently becomes worth $1. There was a lot said on this topic already btw.

However that also means that you're throwing random accusations without having any solid information which makes it hard to trust you  :D  but hey if you like selling for peanuts and bringing peanuts to the table, I can't stop you mate, but I can only wish you well.

You can always turn your portfolio back on after a month on Shutterstock to see what happens and if it's worth it.

on again off again... why? if you are that unsure of yourself then keep the images and videos on Shutterstock so you can feel the burn each and every time you make a sale that does not even cover the costs to power your computer to see if you made a sale or close your account and be thankful you don't support an operation like Shutterstock.

I'm free to do whatever I want to do.  And just in case Shutterstock change their way back to it was before, it's unwise to delete contents and close account.  I have 15,000 video clips and 6,000 photos.  It's stupid to upload and tag all over again just in case Shutterstock changes back to how they were.

Really??? Just in case Shutterstock change their way back to the way it was... That is milk coming out my nose funny.

Here's the solid information that I apparently don't have...

https://help.pond5.com/hc/en-us/articles/360029928151

You'll see it states that the price guarantee won't apply to any prices under their minimum of $25 for HD and $50 for 4K... which is what I said.

yes because "match price" only applies to "standard sales"...no subscription or any special deal...pond5 has already its own subscription called membership,so it does make sense...

I stopped uploading ANYthing on SS since their commission robbery.
Now I don't sell more videos and I have a lot of $0,87 or $3,.. sales, and almost even no extended licenses anymore for vectors

I don't know if it's kind of a coincidence but I take it as if : very massive sales on P5 this month and last night amongst many 28 and sometimes 70 sales, 4x 175 on Adobe Stock! Farewell SS

Seriously do you think SS will ever change the system back?

I think thats why you keep making these announcements on their forum in the vain hope SS will actually say "whoa BLVDone has deleted their portfolio! Quick we better pay more!"

Buddy they aren't listening to you or any contributor the system they have now will never change back.

Your only choice is either take the hit or remove your portfolio.

There's plenty of idiots out there willing to take 10 cents or 1 cent to keep uploading their stuff.

I have done exactly the same thing, except I sell only Vectors and Photo's and sales have gone up on Adobe Stock.

SS sales are not only down, but of course so is the commission, last month was the first time in nine years that I didn't receive a payout.

Right, writing on the SS forum that they don't read, or someone else writing to management and wondering why he gets no reply? Really, did someone actually expect the CFO to answer an email?

So many cheap sales on SS... A lot of sales, but little income, 3rd month in a row Pond5 gives me 2x - 3x times more income than SS. Exclusive account has its benefits, because I do not want also to sell my work for pennies. Maybe for some countries this income is fine, but to live at my place selling for pennies or several dollars is not enough to continue this work.

Totally understand the feeling.  Every time I saw those sub $10 (actually mostly sub $5) video subs sales reports, I felt angry thinking what I could've made on Adobe Stock and Pond5 for the same video sales.  It's the peace of mind that's priceless now that I don't see those infuriating sales reports.

Yes, I just want to have people here, see what kind of person he really is. Many have commented and criticized him for his incoherent rants and never ending rubbish, but he's got this personal "thing" for me. Wow, an obsessed angry person, calling me names and personally attacking me, on yet another forum, because I dare to disagree with the mighty Blvdone. Well I'm not going to sink to his childish levels. Just the facts...

He's already banned on SS forums after pushing the limits for a couple months. Maybe he's trying to get banned here too?  8)

Oh and yes, I should be working on improving my photo skills, that's always a good idea for all of us? Always keep improving and learning.

Thanks
Cleop6atra

No worries.  I'm still getting the same decent amount of commission per sale on Pond5 and Adobe Stock just like it has been for many years.  And since I moved all my editorial clips to Pond5 exclusive after un-licensing videos on Shutterstock, I'm getting 60% commission on them.  Nice!!  There's a life without Shutterstock.  It's good!!

I think you've got a bit of a persecution complex.  You aren't attacked or ridiculed on the Shutterstock forum or here.
You don't seem to like people voicing an opinion different to yours and you are quite often disparaging others who do stock for different reasons to you ('nobody contributors'.)
If you're not careful you will get yourself banned here too and then you will lose your voice completely.
You need to remember that you are 8 months too late in kicking up about the Shutterstock payment changes so you're not likely to get sympathy now.
If you had actually joined in the campaign 8 months ago you would have seen that this forum was strong in protest with lots of 'meaningful threads' , not 'weak', as you say.

They've never started a meaningful thread/conversation.  All they do is to come in and ridicule people.  And then I strike back, they get upset like a little punk.  LMAO!!  Weak.
At least they don't start the same thread 100 times like you do and they don't rant at anybody who disagrees calling them names and attacking them. You're a flaming narcissist striking out at anybody who disagrees with you.

You can always turn your portfolio back on after a month on Shutterstock to see what happens and if it's worth it.

on again off again... why? if you are that unsure of yourself then keep the images and videos on Shutterstock so you can feel the burn each and every time you make a sale that does not even cover the costs to power your computer to see if you made a sale or close your account and be thankful you don't support an operation like Shutterstock.

You should remember this quote

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodilehoping it will eat him last. Sir Winston Churchill, Reader's Digest, December 1954.

So many good points, all in a row! + + + + + + of them.

Right, writing on the SS forum that they don't read, or someone else writing to management and wondering why he gets no reply? Really, did someone actually expect the CFO to answer an email?

In Case They Change?  ::)

There have been petitions, coalitions, protests, removals, complaints, forum icons there no 10c, never ending crying... and this one person thinks if he disables his portfolio, maybe SS will change?

OK you hater HodagMedia on Shutterstock forum.  You should work on your photo skill rather than wasting your time posting craps you stupid redneck MFer.

Snowflake at his best.

In a nutshell... your posts are whiny, repetitive, and boring.

So back to the topic, video sales abruptly stopped on shutterstock for over a month now. Maybe they are selling but shutterstock isn't crediting the contributor's account with the sale. Nothing off-limits for this company anymore.
