Soon they'll be paying us with Exposure.

If stock photography/video isn't making you money, and isn't making you happy, perhaps it's time to do something else.

In the stock industry, we are in the mercy of big players serving our files... if they choose to give them for almost no money, we could only take files down, but all other agencies soon follow the dumping practice.

In b2b video production industry, I just don't do works that are underpaid. While still have chances to change clients mind why my service costs more than some newbies. If they don't understand, I'm not at much loss, because I didn't need to waste my time and resources to make anything.

I like shooting videos, but I've overgrown this Exposure crap that everywhere is common. Exposure doesn't pay bills. #fact

Hi,

I read this post in April, when it started, and I could't believe that a footage can be sold by 5 USD (1.5 dollars contributor's share). And then it started: May, 1 video sold on my account at 1.5 usd, June 4 videos, July 6 videos. The number is growing, month by month, I send them an email about this, their answer was: "we fully understand and respect your decisions related to your portfolio and content. There is no option to opt-out of this license use. These clips are for web or mobile application only, they can only be streamed, not downloaded".

So, I and you all will keep selling videos for almost nothing, without any right to choose if we want it or not ! This is the conclusion

In July we had about 10-15 sales of $1.5... and it does impact our overall income number.

. . . these clips are for web or mobile application only. They can only be streamed; downloading and broadcast usage isn't permitted. This restriction has been designed to protect your earnings and give you an extra chance to make money.

This is not true. Anyone can right mouse click on the website and download the master file. The videos are not protected.

The downloading is beside the point - how else have our clips been used in the past, other than for people to watch them? Streaming is just another technology for broadcast via the internet. A stream can reach millions of people - probably much more than broadcast, why should that technology get different rates?

Yeah but what people can do, and what people are allowed to do, are two very different things.

Im firmly convinced this IS hitting income.

Im getting the same number roughly of video sales as usual but the last few months instead of the usual commission from them im getting $1.50
Conclusion is that people who would previously have paid a normal price are now getting the $5 extra special offer package instead.

So from my point of view this this isn't "extra revenue" as SS claim, its my existing revenue being cut as they're selling my work at a cheaper price than was previously available.

Then again, since they changed search in May meaning if a buyer clicks on "HD" it excludes EVERY 4k video from the search results (even though they can be downloaded in HD).

OT, but isn't that the way it's always worked? I remember complaining about that 4 years ago, when I first started UL'ing 4K clips.

Back on topic, July was my lowest RPD in years, due to several lower than normal clip prices (including at least one $1.50 sale).

Got my first 1,5 sale. Not happy.

But overall I had a very good month with video on SS.

They altered the behaviour years ago to fix it.
Then it broke in May and remains unfixed.  Support is claiming its not deliberate and engineers are aware of the fault although i don't believe them.

The end result is its not worth uploading 4k as itll get hidden from buyers wanting HD and HD makes up 90%+ of sales.

The downloading is not 'beside the point'. People can download the master file WITHOUT PAYING FOR IT!

Dear ShutterStock,

I am building a new Stock Video website, I would like to use your clips so you can have some major exposure. I will be paying you $10 a month! You get money and exposure all I ask is for your video library. This is a special offer I only give to select agencies. I will only allow people to download the clips but not stream them as to protect your business! So glad you are excited as I am over this offer! See you at the food stamp line :-)

If that's true i'd message support on their forum or email.  Mistakes like that do happen and have been corrected before now.

In a few years time we will sound like old timers saying, "Back in the day (2017) I use to get $30 for a video" Now I get $1.50 or less  :-\

I think in August we are already at the point where we sold more $1.50 than regular video sales. GG SS.

Same here, August so far on Shutterstock is looking dismal. Have gone from very consistent sales to 50% below the worst month in the last 3 years. The last time sales were this low my portfolio there was only 1/20 its current size.

I am going to have my 4th month in a row $200-$300 less than my norm.  Something happened to the search. This was over night.  On the bright side my tax obligation is going to be much less this year:)
