I can short my images by date, and by popularity, and popularity dont means most download images.
Anybody know or suspected what that's means???
-
As I have understood the "most popular images" are a mix of the most sold, last sold and new uploaded images.
But it is very probable that I have not understood…
-
Most Popular means what SS thinks you will want to see and be most likely to buy. It should be titled, Agency Selection for your search.
It has to do with, downloads, age, views, keywords, buyers location, previous purchases, previous searches, or who knows how many other things that SS has determined the buyer might want. Nothing to do with any obvious or simple answer to what it means.
We don't know and they aren't telling.

Nice answer... thank you for your help ;)
Maybe they arent telling becuse if they do it we can manipulate it by someway

maybe they aren't telling because if they do it we can manipulate it by someway
Or because a competitor could copy it I think is more likely

We don't know and they aren't telling.
I sent them an email yesterday asking to explain clearly this point.
We will see… (or maybe their answer will be noisy and soft focused?)

It tallies quite closely with downloads per month, but with more of a bias for more recent sales, as far as I can work out from my own port.

As my Chinese friends say : "you very funny man." :)
Since day one, the SS search has been a better kept secret than many trade secrets, recipes, formulas or government secrets.
Yes, if they told us, people would immediately start to game the search for higher page views or placement. But I think the ultimate answer is - they don't want the competition to know.
I doubt that you will get a direct answer of any sort. Did you ask "What does Popular mean in the search?" Just can't wait to see what they answer. Please quote and report back.
Here's my answer: We don't know and they aren't telling. and I'm sticking to it. ;)

I have asked them to explain me how they define the "most popular images", according what criterions, and why in the "most popular images" I can find images that have never been sold (so how they can be "popular").
Well, maybe I will get a faster and more precise answer if I ask directly to NSA… Or wait the next photostockleaks…

Good news Beppe I found the official answer for you. (not that it's going to help much?) :'( Underline is mine.
What is the Most Popular sort order?
For each image in our library, we calculate a popularity score based on the total number of downloads, the length of time the image has been available to customers on our site, and a number of other proprietary metrics. Organizing your search results by Most Popular images first, currently the default setting, ensures that you'll see the images we have identified as the highest-quality images most relevant to your search. Additional sorting options include “Newest First,” “Oldest First,” and “Random.”
