Title: Who uses german keywords with Shutterstock?
Post by: fotorob on October 30, 2008, 05:41
Hello,

I have submitted images at Shutterstock from Germany and they asked to keyword the files in German.

Usually no probem since German keywords are already in the IPTC-Headers.

But Shutterstock messes them up, giving me for "Geschäftsfrau" --> "Gesch?ftsfrau", so I have to correct every keyword with "Umlauten" in it.

Does it happen with other people too? If no, what browser etc. you use? (I use Firefox 2.0.17 on a PC)

I would like to find a way to avoid this work.

Thanks in advance,
Robert

I wouldn't submit images with german keywords to Shutterstock. The automated translation sucks, customers are searching nearly only in english or spanish at Shutterstock so you have only disadvantages.
In the past i had huge problems with SS and others if i had Umlauts in the filename i don't know if is still so as i take care to only use Unicode for the filename now.
Go for english it is accepted by all microstockagencies and its by far the language in that customers search most so searchresults would not be spoiled by bad automated translation (which never really work even with disambibullshit IMHO).

I never use the website in german and I never use german keywords either. As the others said, they will most likely only get scrambled in some bizarre way by the automated translation.

Of course!
But i don't enter them on the website they are already in the IPTC. Just check on the submission page that the flag right above in the corner shows english if not change!

strange, why should they ask you to keyword in German? Didn't happen to me, I submit my English versions (though I have German versions as well...).

I would stay away from non-english keywords on any "international" site - with the possible exception of PantherMedia. My English - and yours too, propably - might not be perfect, but it sure is a * sight better than what comes out of Fotolia's, Shutterstock's or anyone else's automatic translation.  ;D

I think that most customers use English keywords in searches, an exception being PantherMedia as written above and maybe to a certain extent Fotolia were I regularly see sales to French customers...

One Correction:
i think they only ask you for german words because you didn't change the flag in the corner to english, change it and they will not ask you for german keywords i'm pretty sure its that simple.
And again english is the way to go!
