Those flickering animated GIF sponsor banner ads on this site drive me nuts. I have to slide my browser over to block them out all the time. Just plain annoying as hell. Guest I am too visual -- perhaps like most of us. The place is starting to look like a Christmas tree.

So why not subscribe to help pay towards the cost of running the site ?

I am fine with the ads... just not the animated blinking ones.
Subscribe? Does Leaf offer subscriptions?

Profile -> Actions -> Paid Subscriptions

I hope that my previous was not misleading - subscribing won't get rid of the ads for you. I am simply speculating that perhaps if more people subscribed there would be less need for the ads.

Maybe that would be an incentive - sponsor and don't see ads?
(Or try AdBlockPro, which blocks most, but not all, ads here.)

Exactly.  Anyone who spends enough time on the internet learns quickly about the adblock extensions.  I still see about 3 ads, but a lot less without ABP installed.

I personally never use ad blockers, since I like free content. Also, I see interesting stuff once in a while. Funny that people that create images for advertising use don't want to see ads. :)

There is one sports site I am reading regularly which has 22 ads blocked. The site is an absolute mess with all the ads, slowing down load times, auto start video ads with audio, flashing gifs. It was that site that caused me to install ABP and I havent look back since. It is an absolute pleasure to surf the web without ads. Every time I see an ad here on the site, sneaking through the blocker, I add it to the blocker database. The ads are uploaded from Google drive to this site and therefore not detected.

use Firefox with the QuickJava addon and deactivate Animated Images (the "I" icon).

you can do it in other ways also but it's more complex.

while you're at it you can also disable Flash and Javascript, that's an even better option, and install Ghostery on top of this.

yeah or try cr-ap like Time Magazine or Huffington Post, 25-30 javascript calls and each page is around 1MB !

i can't believe people can browse the web without at least some pop-up blocker and flash disabled.

Flash in particular is the worst thing even invented and since now it's a dead man walking it's being replaced by flashy HTML5 videos and other sh-it that goes even beyong Flash and is harder to block.
