Title: Forum getting updated
Post by: leaf on August 24, 2012, 04:48
It's finally come time to upgrade the forum to the SMF 2.0 software.  I'll plan on working on it today so you may see some errors or strange messages .. no worries.  everything's under control.  I promise.  ;D

.. that's also to say that if things crash and burn they will be restored to this point and some posts will be lost.

haha.. yeah congrats.

Nice to see that it's working.  Things should be a little faster and hopefully a lot less spamers.  The layout looks like crap - I'm working on that still.

Is like [disagree] like thumbs up/thumbs down?
I'm scared to try it out in case it's something different!

I don't think I'll use that feature.  A thumbs up on posts that people agree with is nice I think.  I'll see what I can find for a nice mod.

Yeah, I haven't done anything with the design yet.  It is just the default.

Is DT/IS rank gone? It's a pity. It was good to see myself slowly climbing up…
What these yellow squares mean? I have four of them - it must be something very bad. :-)
Diamond Members have only one - it must be reminder that it is time to pay. OK. I'm going to do it right now.  :-)

yellow squares: who knows, proabably post count or something.  They'll be gone soon

Good job Leaf.

New look always requires getting used to, same with agencies.
Clear design, keep it a few days, see if people adapt to it.

Later

ps. U'll have to change the banner if this colour theme is a keeper, never liked it very much anyway, too dark.

Nice job, leaf!

I would suggest that on the home page where threads are listed, you use a bit larger type size and bold the thread titles.  It's really hard to read through that list.

But overall, looks real nice.

Almost impossible to read the Recent Topics list.  Needs font size, bold, or separator chart bars or something to be able to pick titles off of the page much more easily.

Agree.  Plus the ones I haven't read aren't bolded anymore to separate them from the ones I've already visited.

Tyler, you're doing great. Take your time and it will look awesome!

I have one thing (may have been mentioned before):

When I check the index.php (Home) page with all the latest posts it would be even easier to navigate if the even rows would have a lighter color and the odd rows a darker color. Just to structure it a little more.

Basically the same way the actual thread posts are colored.

Keep up the great work!

I have a small request. If you could add a "home" button at the bottom of the thread pages it would be nice. Long threads when viewed on my phone or ipad require scrolling completely back to the top to get to the home page again. It really isn't that big of a deal but if you are adding changes I though I would ask.

Thanks- I like the new look

I would like (I think it used to be this way) to see the originator of a thread as well as who last posted. There are some time-wasters who like talking to themselves and it saves a click or two to be able to see that from the recent posts list :)

Yeah, now bring back the bright colors to the new messages so they jump out. The duo-tone blue on grey needs some pep.

Hey leaf, I am finding the new colours/fonts/sizes harder to read, compared to before, especially on my iphone 3GS. As a suggestion, could the topic name be a bigger size and BOLD, rather than the persons name being bold? (referring to viewing the "Show unread posts..." and "Show new replies..." links. Just noticed the regular forum itself doesn't do bold on anything.)

Also, in the forum itself, the last column on the right - can that be made bigger so we can see the latest topic better? It's very thin compared to before.

Ok, I'll shut up now :)

haha, well i thought it would be easier to quickly browse and to isolate it from the category and poster.  If people think it is too large I can alter it.

I hope so, I'll have to buy either a bigger screen or use my current in portrait mode just to read the topics ;)

Yeah, it's a bit large. I know it depends on one's screen resolution. On my Mac at home it's ok but on the clunker PC I have to use at work it is rather large. I vote for smaller. I've been hanging around here awhile and am ready to pay for the good info and chuckles, are you going to reinstate an easy way to contribute?

Oops, just found it under Support, I'm off to PayPal...

This request might be far fetched, but I love the "most recent" page.  A lot of forums you have to drill into the subcategories to see new topics so I really appreciate this feature.  Wondering if there is a possibility of getting a scroll bar here so we can go back in time a page or two?  I've gone away to return to every topic on the most recent page being new, but I don't think there is anyway to retrieve the older posts if we don't open up each sub category?  Just a "nice to have" if you are up with insomnia some nigh  ;)

On the top there should be links
Show unread posts since last visit.
Show new replies to your posts.

If not, click the little arrow on the top right and they should drop down.  Do they do what you are looking for?

That said, I agree - it would be nice to have more 'latest topics' on the front page or a 'page 2, 3' as you say.

Little glitch I've noticed. When I write a post and then spell-check it before sending ... the post simply disappears after I have hit the Post button. If I post the message without spell-checking it then I do not have this problem. I'm on Win7 and IE8.

Edited to add __ just tried spell-checking this message before sending (having copied it first) and the problem did not occur. It did happen with 2 earlier messages though.

strange.  I'll try spell checking a bit in the next few days and see if I can recreate the problem.  I usually just trust firefox to spellcheck for me as I type and never use the button.

Also, in the forum itself, the last column on the right - can that be made bigger so we can see the latest topic better? It's very thin compared to before.

Ok, I'll shut up now :)

Can you explain more?  I'm not sure where you mean

It seems to be a little better, but I still find that the important column on the right which contains the most relevant info, is the hardest to read and most squeezed. I have a screen grab of what I mean. The red area seems to be wasted space? Perhaps the boards title (the orange titles) should determine the size of this space instead, with the black text underneath wrapping to fit. Then we could have a much larger right hand column (blue square in screen grab) to see the latest threads title, who's talking etc...

Hope that make some sense! Just my 2cents...

If I wanted a blue logo I'd probably use the one that kngkyle submitted several years ago

I'm partial to orange though :) and the theme has a number of other orange elements which I feel ties things together a bit.

Cheers, thanks :) Just to add to your workload, has anyone else mentioned that the new site is sluggish on iPhone 3GS? Links in particular. It usually takes around 5 seconds to register a click. This never used to happen before the upgrade.

Promise, that's my last complaint  ;)

How about doing away with saying a post has been edited until after someone else has posted behind it.

Right now if no one post's after you and you forgot something and go back and fix it it says EDITED.

Why no have it only say EDITED after someone else post's behind it like SS does?

Yeah, but... it might have been read before you edited it. Lots of people read posts but don't comment. If you write something and it is read and that person thinks that it isn't worth coming back to and then you edit it to add some brilliant additional text to make it better, or different, those that read it first might not realize you changed it.

You actually get 2 minutes to edit your post before it will be labeled 'edited'.  So if you see a spelling mistake and change it or add something else right after you won't see the edited note.

edited... but you wouldn't know it :)

Why a time limit?

If I leave and go to my sites and do other things and realize I need to change something in the post it may be more then 2 minutes by the time I get back to it.

So that people who read it while you are off doing something else realize they aren't crazy thinking there was something else there before that now is gone.
Really, it's not a big deal that the 'edited' note comes on a post.  there is a time stamp so you can also see when the edit was made.

Maybe it's just me, but one feature I would really like is a Page 2, Page 3 etc of Recent Posts. Sometimes when the forum is busy threads come and go before I've seen them - and it's only if someone bumps them up again later that I see a thread that was relevant/interesting to me. For example, the threads currently at the bottom of the page (and about to drop off) are only two days old. Probaly just a page 2 would be plenty. Anyone else? Regards, David.

Yes, you make a good point.  I think a slider or 'page 2' would be a bit complicated in terms of coding but I have expanded the number of threads that are shown on the front page by 20 or so, hopefully that helps a bit.
