It's finally come time to upgrade the forum to the SMF 2.0 software. I'll plan on working on it today so you may see some errors or strange messages .. no worries. everything's under control. I promise. ;D
.. that's also to say that if things crash and burn they will be restored to this point and some posts will be lost.
-
Wow, WTH. Who stole my cheese!? I thought this place got hacked.

well it looks like the forum is updated and healthy.. it just looks strange (for now). I'll work on that next.
-
no thank you! ;D
-
I like this new version. It shows I have "Useful Posts: 65535".

haha.. yeah congrats.
Nice to see that it's working. Things should be a little faster and hopefully a lot less spamers. The layout looks like crap - I'm working on that still.
-
Is like [disagree] like thumbs up/thumbs down?
I'm scared to try it out in case it's something different!

I don't think I'll use that feature. A thumbs up on posts that people agree with is nice I think. I'll see what I can find for a nice mod.
-
Design-wise it is much more attractive. I like the change.
-
Just have to post to experience it...
Ooh it's all shiny and new ;D
-
its a lot harder to read and find the topics, the colors are very similar

Yeah, I haven't done anything with the design yet. It is just the default.

Is DT/IS rank gone? It's a pity. It was good to see myself slowly climbing up…
What these yellow squares mean? I have four of them - it must be something very bad. :-)
Diamond Members have only one - it must be reminder that it is time to pay. OK. I'm going to do it right now. :-)

DT/IS -rank: No, just the links are gone - until I get it fixed
yellow squares: who knows, proabably post count or something. They'll be gone soon

haha, yeah - that page doesn't exist anymore :) Still working at getting things up and running and everything back in place. There should be a link at the top saying 'Support' when I have it working.
-
Good job Leaf.
New look always requires getting used to, same with agencies.
Clear design, keep it a few days, see if people adapt to it.
Later
ps. U'll have to change the banner if this colour theme is a keeper, never liked it very much anyway, too dark.

Nice job, leaf!
I would suggest that on the home page where threads are listed, you use a bit larger type size and bold the thread titles. It's really hard to read through that list.
But overall, looks real nice.
-
Almost impossible to read the Recent Topics list. Needs font size, bold, or separator chart bars or something to be able to pick titles off of the page much more easily.

Agree. Plus the ones I haven't read aren't bolded anymore to separate them from the ones I've already visited.

Isn't that what the big orange NEW indicates?

agreed agreed.. it's still a work in progress. Give me a few more minutes :)
-
Tyler, you're doing great. Take your time and it will look awesome!
I have one thing (may have been mentioned before):
When I check the index.php (Home) page with all the latest posts it would be even easier to navigate if the even rows would have a lighter color and the odd rows a darker color. Just to structure it a little more.
Basically the same way the actual thread posts are colored.
Keep up the great work!
-
I have a small request. If you could add a "home" button at the bottom of the thread pages it would be nice. Long threads when viewed on my phone or ipad require scrolling completely back to the top to get to the home page again. It really isn't that big of a deal but if you are adding changes I though I would ask.
Thanks- I like the new look
-
Looks good - nice job.

Is the ignore feature gone?

temporarily yes, but I'll bring it back.

Looks like that's fixed, at least on my views.

yep, just got that taken care of. Just playing with the colors a bit now.

I must have missed that, but it looks like the bold/regular is working again.

Hi Leaf, it looks attractive. I wish you'd reduce the extra empty space.
What does the yellow square mean?

I was wondering the same thing. Sean Locke has only 1 square and so does Leaf, while others have more.

Thanks Leaf, I think this index.php now looks much better!

Maybe it's like the old stars that IIRC only showed up when PMing, but I could never interpret.

If we're wishing, I'd love a Home button at the bottom of each page, if possible.
-
Is the ignore feature gone?
temporarily yes, but I'll bring it back.
Maybe you could reset everyone back to zero. That way we all get a second chance to behave ourselves!
Looks good! It will take some getting used to, but much more modern looking.
-

I'm heading to bed now but I'll take care of that tomorrow. I'll also remove some of those useless things below our user names on the side.

Did you know you can get to the top of the page by touching the top of the screen? Works great on iPhone and iPad. I only wish there was an equivalent for scrolling to the bottom.
-
No I didn't know that. Nice tip. Thanks

No, but I don't have anything that would work on, so it isn't surprising!
I'm sure that tip will help others, though. It's all good. :)

So wth are the little gold boxes and what do they represent?
Some have 5 and some have one?

it would be nice to have the Online list at the bottom in alphabetical order ;)
-
Things are looking much better. Thanks for all the work Tyler.
I would like (I think it used to be this way) to see the originator of a thread as well as who last posted. There are some time-wasters who like talking to themselves and it saves a click or two to be able to see that from the recent posts list :)

You read my mind Leaf, just last week I was thinking this place needed a fresh coat of paint, I go away for the weekend and come back to a fresh upgrade! Great stuff. Look forward to when your finished tweaking. Thanks again :)
-
Been away for the weekend, came back and popped in to see what's happening and :o Wasn't sure it was the right place at first. Now I've had a chance to look round I like it ;D

I also thought I'd try a post ratings things... feel free to share your thoughts on it.

Looks great and useful Leaf.

On my phone, the actual discussion text column is only 3-4 words wide. Makes for loooooong pages to scroll down. Less space around the avatar would help.
-
I've been using an app called Tapatalk to read the forum on my iPhone and iPad. It's been broken since the update. Lists of posts show up, but I get an error when I try to select a post to read: Unknown Error: It appears the server has some issue with Tapatalk or your session is expired. If this problem persists, please re-enter this forum from Account tab. Tried that, same result.

Thanks - yeah I haven't installed tapatalk on the update. I can do it now

Yeah, now bring back the bright colors to the new messages so they jump out. The duo-tone blue on grey needs some pep.

I'm glad someone noticed :) So far there is only 7 months on the 'new system' but as more months are completed I'll add more to the graph

Hey leaf, I am finding the new colours/fonts/sizes harder to read, compared to before, especially on my iphone 3GS. As a suggestion, could the topic name be a bigger size and BOLD, rather than the persons name being bold? (referring to viewing the "Show unread posts..." and "Show new replies..." links. Just noticed the regular forum itself doesn't do bold on anything.)
Also, in the forum itself, the last column on the right - can that be made bigger so we can see the latest topic better? It's very thin compared to before.
Ok, I'll shut up now :)
-
Titles are hard to read with this lighter color font. Higher contrast please.
-
On my page on Microstockman's reply the url under his ava overlaps into the forum thread.

yeah, mine too. I'm not sure what to do with that except force perhaps remove things like that from the sidebar. Still thinking what the best / easiest solution is.

Hm.... cannot see. Not even an empty box on that page. I do have some probs in i.e. though - for example the map and lightbox on contributor page at SS doesn't load properly in ie, but I see boxes and a spinning wheel but I can see my stats so I don't need to check in Firefox very often. Do I need to update/install something for this page Leaf? Maybe that will fix my SS prob too :)

Can you see the charts on this page?

Yes I can!

I'm already getting used to the new lay-out and it's looking good, except that I miss seeing the name of the person who started a thread (the OP) in the list. Could that be made visible please? (talking about the recent discussions list, as I just noticed it's already visible in the Forum list).
-
On my page on Microstockman's reply the url under his ava overlaps into the forum thread.
I've tried to fix it myself, hope that helps. Might need to introduce text limits, or better yet, text wrapping to that area? Noticed mine wasn't the only one doing it.

Good idea. I just found out there is a text wrap CSS command so perhaps I'll put that into effect.

Leaf, what's up with the large font on latest topics? We're not all seniors here you know ;)

haha, well i thought it would be easier to quickly browse and to isolate it from the category and poster. If people think it is too large I can alter it.

Yeah, it's a bit large. I know it depends on one's screen resolution. On my Mac at home it's ok but on the clunker PC I have to use at work it is rather large. I vote for smaller. I've been hanging around here awhile and am ready to pay for the good info and chuckles, are you going to reinstate an easy way to contribute?
Oops, just found it under Support, I'm off to PayPal...

Before coffee voiced his opinion it was 1 against one. Afterwards it was 2 against 1.

This request might be far fetched, but I love the "most recent" page. A lot of forums you have to drill into the subcategories to see new topics so I really appreciate this feature. Wondering if there is a possibility of getting a scroll bar here so we can go back in time a page or two? I've gone away to return to every topic on the most recent page being new, but I don't think there is anyway to retrieve the older posts if we don't open up each sub category? Just a "nice to have" if you are up with insomnia some nigh ;)

On the top there should be links
Show unread posts since last visit.
Show new replies to your posts.
If not, click the little arrow on the top right and they should drop down. Do they do what you are looking for?
That said, I agree - it would be nice to have more 'latest topics' on the front page or a 'page 2, 3' as you say.

Little glitch I've noticed. When I write a post and then spell-check it before sending ... the post simply disappears after I have hit the Post button. If I post the message without spell-checking it then I do not have this problem. I'm on Win7 and IE8.
Edited to add __ just tried spell-checking this message before sending (having copied it first) and the problem did not occur. It did happen with 2 earlier messages though.

strange. I'll try spell checking a bit in the next few days and see if I can recreate the problem. I usually just trust firefox to spellcheck for me as I type and never use the button.

Can you explain more? I'm not sure where you mean
It seems to be a little better, but I still find that the important column on the right which contains the most relevant info, is the hardest to read and most squeezed. I have a screen grab of what I mean. The red area seems to be wasted space? Perhaps the boards title (the orange titles) should determine the size of this space instead, with the black text underneath wrapping to fit. Then we could have a much larger right hand column (blue square in screen grab) to see the latest threads title, who's talking etc...
Hope that make some sense! Just my 2cents...

I'm partial to orange though :) and the theme has a number of other orange elements which I feel ties things together a bit.

Cheers, thanks :) Just to add to your workload, has anyone else mentioned that the new site is sluggish on iPhone 3GS? Links in particular. It usually takes around 5 seconds to register a click. This never used to happen before the upgrade.
Promise, that's my last complaint ;)

thanks for the screenshot. I see what you mean. I'll see what I can do
Cheers, thanks :) Just to add to your workload, has anyone else mentioned that the new site is sluggish on iPhone 3GS? Links in particular. It usually takes around 5 seconds to register a click. This never used to happen before the upgrade.
Promise, that's my last complaint ;)
Have you tried the tapatalk app?

nope, perhaps I will have too though

How about doing away with saying a post has been edited until after someone else has posted behind it.
Right now if no one post's after you and you forgot something and go back and fix it it says EDITED.
Why no have it only say EDITED after someone else post's behind it like SS does?

Yeah, but... it might have been read before you edited it. Lots of people read posts but don't comment. If you write something and it is read and that person thinks that it isn't worth coming back to and then you edit it to add some brilliant additional text to make it better, or different, those that read it first might not realize you changed it.

Their loss! :(

You actually get 2 minutes to edit your post before it will be labeled 'edited'. So if you see a spelling mistake and change it or add something else right after you won't see the edited note.
edited... but you wouldn't know it :)

Why a time limit?
If I leave and go to my sites and do other things and realize I need to change something in the post it may be more then 2 minutes by the time I get back to it.

So that people who read it while you are off doing something else realize they aren't crazy thinking there was something else there before that now is gone.
Really, it's not a big deal that the 'edited' note comes on a post. there is a time stamp so you can also see when the edit was made.

I agree, its like playing cards, once you show the card you are going to play, you can't take it back :D

Maybe it's just me, but one feature I would really like is a Page 2, Page 3 etc of Recent Posts. Sometimes when the forum is busy threads come and go before I've seen them - and it's only if someone bumps them up again later that I see a thread that was relevant/interesting to me. For example, the threads currently at the bottom of the page (and about to drop off) are only two days old. Probaly just a page 2 would be plenty. Anyone else? Regards, David.

Yes, you make a good point. I think a slider or 'page 2' would be a bit complicated in terms of coding but I have expanded the number of threads that are shown on the front page by 20 or so, hopefully that helps a bit.

If only agencies were like Leaf.
I'm still convinced that someday we will transform this forum into the best selling stock site on the planet.
Alright back to work.

Thanks for the quick work! That certainly helps. Regard David.
