Leaf, I was going to enter this but I missed the deadline - I did make a start as you can see in the top version. The next step would have been a version with the initials, MSG, in the circles. The other version, bottom example, was just a quick idea but would need to be developed properly.

I hate to say this, but I like both of Reef's more than the contest entries!  Maybe the first bubble could be the iris of a lens or is that too much of a cliche?

Speech bubble is good.. this is a forum site..

Lenses, cameras do not apply here as there are other content creators too.. it is an outdated idea for an industry so diverse..

How about:

1.  A lens (would cover stills and video)
2.  A pencil (would cover all forms of illustration)
3.  A speech bubble (purpose of MSG)

Wouldn't that be simple enough and keep all providers happy? (Hope I haven't forgotten anyone...)

I wish I would have known about this, I could have offered up a solution.

Frankly, I'm not overly impressed with any of the choices.
Hate to say it but I agree, not a big fan of any of them, all seem quite generic. I think it is a problem with these competition sites, the people that take part regularly have to enter loads of contests to make enough money to make it worthwhile, so you end up with very standard cliparty stuff.

Oh yes... sorry... I was trying not to go over three elements. :(

I guess that could be an ear, microphone, speaker, CD, crotchet, or quaver...(?)

But now it seems like too many elements... How about making the 'S' in MSG a USB cable, and have some images, musical notes and binary numbers coming out of it in some way.

I agree but it's still quite an upgrade to what MSG currently have.. at least it will be a logo, not a banner :)

I always find it interesting when people discuss logos. I have designed hundreds of logos for clients big and small, and there are a several misconceptions about logos that I have heard over and over again.

A logo does not need to tell the story about your business. In fact I would say it's better if it didn't.

Think for a moment about all the big brands and their logos. Off the top of your head can you name one that has a logo image that completely details the business? If I owned a company that produced sporting goods, would I need to include an image of each sport that I cater to in my logo?

Ever see a car manufacturer with a picture of a car as their logo? Ever see a camera manufacturer with the way overused lens aperture design?

Although I'm not a huge fan of the logos Leaf has chosen, I do agree with him that it should not be photography focused... and this is really his choice at the end of the day.

However, I do wish i could have taken a stab at this. Although I swore off logo contests quite a while ago, I would have jumped in on this one.

Fair enough.  I'm not a designer.  I just thought it might be fun to brainstorm it, even if my ideas seem like rubbish.  :)

"A logo does not need to tell the story about your business. In fact I would say it's better if it didn't."

But all of them do.  They all/mostly depict 'communication' in some way, which just seems like an easy way out.

I agree Sean. The logos chosen as finalists are somewhat stereotypical icons. Speech bubbles... yet another concept that has been used way too often. I wasn't referring directly to the finalists logos, as much as I was to the people suggesting that the logo should include icons like lenses and pencils.

Too often the focus is on the logo, and not the complete branding package. I've seen logos that are just mediocre on their own but completely brilliant when you look at the entire branding package.

to me they all look good enough, actually most of them are ripoff or are "inspired" from other famous logos.

128 is the one I'd go with if you are going to pick one of that bunch, but lose the silly little second speech bubble in the o.  It doesn't work when it's sized down.  Are the colors set in stone?  They feel a  little....dark and musty? :D Sorry!  I think something fresher would be good.

Hm, for a choice there seems to be a lot of very similar options, font and color wise... and one reminds me far too much of Microsoft with the speech bubbles similar to the Windows logo a few years ago. The other's font is not really a great choice in my opinion.

Well, I cast my votes and rated all of them. Good luck with the choice, I'd be surprised if you'd find any that makes everyone happy. ;)

Yeah, from the votes I can easily see no matter what I choose someone is going to hate it :)  In the end I just have to choose something I like.

The logo entrants all all the same color because I requested the designers to pick from a color pallete I made on Adobe's Kuler.  Here's a link (I think you have to be logged in to see it)

The colors aren't set in stone, they are just a set of colors I like.  I like natural, muted retro tones.  If someone wants to set up a different swatch of colors for a potential new site I'd be interested in seeing some good combinations.

The contest is still going on and there have been a few more nice logos added. I'll create a second poll in a day or two.  Thanks for all the votes and comments, it has been very helpful.

Don't worry too much, it's your site, so get something you like :)

The contest is still going on...

Only for the designers that you chose, correct?

Right, I picked 8 finalists so it is now closed to them.

Also, the reason lots of the logos look very similar is because one designer has made most of the variations.

I couldn't see the pallette even when logged in...

Why designs #104 and #27 are presented smaller in lenght than other longtail designs words? If they were same lenght like other designs they will definitely pop in you eyes.  :o
