Ok, a new little toy
If you go to your profile page.
http://www.microstockgroup.com/profile/ (http://www.microstockgroup.com/profile/)
You will see something called MicrostockGroup Ranking. It will hopefully encourage us to upload better and faster :) ... if we want a little motivation - or at least give us an idea of how we are doing. It is simply how your upload count and sales compares to the other members on MicrostockGroup. The ranking only includes those members who have entered their iStock and Dreamstime information into their Forum Profile Information (http://www.microstockgroup.com/profile/?sa=forumProfile).
So for example, if it says
Dreamstime
Sales 100/525
Uploads 123/525
That means that 99 people (out of 525 people) have more sales than you on Dreamstime, and 122 people (out of 525) have more uploads than you.
If it says N/a that means you haven't entered your user information in the Forum Profile Information (http://www.microstockgroup.com/profile/?sa=forumProfile) area
Once you have entered your information, you will also be included in the ranking list

xx/yy for both uploads and downloads. 31/442 is what mine says for uploads. I don't recognize either of those numbers

wow that's fantastic! the best thing about it is how easy it is now to compare how well your images are performing. If sales position is higher than upload position (irrespective of absolute rank) then you know you are doing something right!

Yeah that is right Microbius. It could also have to do with the length of time you have been on Dreamstime. However your sales to uploads position is very good so I would have to think it is more than just time online. I on the other hand am doing better on uploads than sales - in addition to being online for quite a while giving me lots of chance to get downloads. What that means: I have too much crap in my portfolio!

Not a factor at DT, but not disappointed in the overall placement. Not looking to increase ... my upload/rejection ratio is too low to get much uploading done. Hope buyers will find the stuff that is there.

haha, yeah I bet lots of people are uploading this weekend. with the extra time off. I stopped uploading to Shutterstock so that my images don't get drowned :) I'll continue again next week - although the reviewers will probably be a bit backlogged

You only started in July of this year! You have a marvelous food/people port, the kind that sells well on stock. You will climb the ranks fast.

I was actually quite amazed by the statistics. We don't have the largest collections, and we have taken a break from uploading over the past year. My guess is that a strategy of a diverse collection has helped maintain our sales. This is not an original idea... 25 years ago, the sales manager of a stock agency provided invaluable advice. Clients then would make a research request (the old school version of a keyword search) and researchers would send out slides. If you didn't have an image in that delivery, there was no way you could make a sale. My goal as a generalist photographer was to populate as many "keywords" as possible with good images. (Please note this is quite different from populating images with as many keywords as possible!) The diversity helps maintain the long term income potential of a collection.

Interesting, how come I have no data entered and I can still see my ranking? The boxes are empty? (not anymore, I added the accounts so I could play if you add more agencies) But how did I get a rank, with no info? Default database or error or is this real? I'll give it a day to adjust to filling in the boxes.
Add more sites, add more sites. This beats the surveys all to heck. No lying! ;D

Sales on IS that places me just into the middle 2/3rds of all contributors. What's that? Yes, 33% of all IS contributors are lower than me. Just can't wait for my first payout, (won't be long now) so I can see where that stands. Uploads? The number above with just over 100 accepted files, puts me in the top third. In other words, 67% of all the members accounted for on istockcharts, have LESS files than I do. 25% here have under 100 files on IS.

It does raise some questions in my mind, as far as, how can anyone be doing worse than me on DT? ;D
I have in effect removed my DT portfolio, 10 images left. Which makes me wonder how people can be lower than I am? This is the result of low sales, never cashing in, for two years! 24 RF licenses in two years, most of them for 2008 uploads of the same style... "images like this don't sell well" rejected in 2009, I gave up. (call that a personal issue if you want, but I quit.)
But back to the point, if it is the 62 total files (disabled plus active) then 29 people have less. If it's the ten files, that's crazy! Sales? How can anyone do worse than $20 for two years?

perhaps that was a rhetorical question but.... since you asked :)
Either it means you are new and haven't had time to get the downloads, or you need to work less on quantity and more on quality. Looking at your portfolio, you seem to have nice clean images and some of your recent shots are very nice. Not sure where the sales are though... perhaps it is keywords, or shooting less popular subjects or trying to sell within very competitive keywords.

I have never done too well on Dreamstime, though it started picking up in volume this year. iStock and Shutterstock have both been going fabulous this past year, leaving DT at about 1/6th of my total income. iStock is still my top moneymaker, followed (usually closely) by Shutterstock.

i think this whole rank thing is really suspect. first of all, i had disabled any public istock info in my profile. second, some people with more downloads have a lower rank and others with less dls have a higher rank than me. i am pretty new so i'm not complaining about my rank but it just seem a little screwy like john's experience. ???

Leaf, I know you're seeing some criticism here, but I for one appreciate the tool. It's a good way to benchmark one's progress with others who are serious about microstock. I've actually been looking at it several times a week since you implemented it to watch my movement... I'm pretty pleased with my positioning since I've just been submitting to Dreamstime for about 14 months and Istock for about 3 months. Thanks for all you do on this site... it really is an invaluable resource for all of us, and I don't see my colleagues pointing that out enough. Kudos!

actually, since you fixed the problem with showing old data, i don't have a problem with rank anymore. but to cite specific examples, i'll need to name names. maybe i can pm you instead.

yeah, good idea. I had also though to show the people who are close to you so you can see how much farther you have to go to move up in the ranking. The peoples names could be hidden or shown.

Hey, I just realised I've got a Dreamstime rank, and it's not even the lowest for downloads!
I've never had an image uploaded, far less downloaded on DT, and the lst time I looked I was n/a for DT, which I checked is still the status showing for another group member I know has always been an iStock exclusive.
Just pointing this out as I don't want an iStock exclusive witch-hunt.

yeah - perhaps they should be linked to a profile page instead, but they search for the users images, which is what they were meant to do, although perhaps that is confusing?!

well I just learned I have a totally rotten overall DPI (downloads per image) That is obviously something I can improve!

Ok here's what you need to do to solve the problem. Go to dreamstime and just head right into your management area and click the online files button. Now click on the title to sort files by downloads. The next thing you should do is select all the images with no sales .... now delete them all. LOL your DPI will skyrocket ;D
I think that's a pretty solid plan. I tell ya what since you and me are tied for DPI at DT you go ahead and try it first and then let me know if it works out.

If I have 50 to choose from then the buyers may make 200 purchases of my landscape but they will be spread over 50 images giving only 4 sales per image. If I had only 5 landscape then I would get 40 sales per landscape and that would push the images into a higher level on DT. I am exaggerating a bit, but I wonder if the idea of 'less is more' is the best strategy.

I think it would actually work but only for some people. Like on DT I know that even though my DPI is only 2.5 about 80% of my sales are all XL, Max & this week I'm seeing TIFF sales (btw, are those new or something because I've never seen them before) anyway my point is my sub sales are around 10-12% and small-med is maybe 5% and large 5% of the total sales. So if I removed all the 0 sales then chances are I would lose a lot of higher-credit sales so there's a greater risk involved ... I know I've heard others talking about getting crazy sub sales like over 60% .. if that was the case then I would definitely think removing a lot of the 0 sales would be a good idea because they now have a better fighting chance of eventually getting closer to making a dollar per download.
I don't know .. I'm not brave enough to take the risk on something like that. After all it only takes the right person to throw a shot with 0 sales in their public collection one day and then you suddenly get a couple 50 credit EL's from it out of nowhere ... that and going through and deleting files seems like a lot of work. I have to force myself to upload as it is LOL

yeah, the TIFF sales are new. They started with the recent price increase.
I know what you mean though - I don't dare delete things either. I don't mind the database cleaning DT is doing though. It is a good and fair way to clean out the old files that are not selling.

because I was fiddling with the system again and broke things. It is fixed now - your stats should be displayed correctly and should be updated correctly too.

Don't have any way of doing selective screenshot at the mo, but if u Zoom in using FF the agency names enlarge but NOT the enclosing dropdown box. Hope that helps :)

One little bug - on the iStock page the usernames are linked to Dreamstime searches.
yeah - perhaps they should be linked to a profile page instead, but they search for the users images, which is what they were meant to do, although perhaps that is confusing?!
Sorry, I could have made that more clear. It's not the search vs profile page I was pointing out. It's that on the iStock rank page they link to searches at Dreamstime, not iStock like one would expect. i.e. Why search for SJLocke images at Dreamstime.

Just looked at the ranking for iStock and found one guy who has 637 images online but no downloads, according to the rankings, but if u click his name and go to IS it says he he has >6700 downloads !?
How can this be ??? Surely this makes a farce of the rankings !?
p.s. got my first sale at IS yesterday and still no guage under my avatar !? :(

Thanks for finding the error. The ranking updater was getting stuck on someone who didn't have a username. I have fixed it so it should be updating properly in the future.
The updates are only run once per day to keep the load light on iStock and Dreamstime, so you might not see immediate results if you get a sale. i see you have a gauge now though.

neither really. iStock doesn't display your specific sales details. They round it to the nearest 1000, 100, 10 etc. depending on the amount of your sales. The rank then just takes what is shown. When you view your own profile you see the exact number of downloads you have.
I have 11810 sales

I guess they should say temporarily out of order - because that is what they are. I was having problems with them stealing all the system resources and bringing the site to it's knees. I have to do a little fixing.

yep, your name shouldn't be in the ranking list if it was never entered. The rank list isn't working right now either so it for sure won't be there :)
But if you HAD entered your portfolio info into your profile and wanted to remove your name from the ranking you could either just remove your portfolio info or click the boxes on the bottom that say ' don't include me in the ranking etc.'
