Yes easier on the eyes.    Did I precipitate this at all with my link back to the SMF mods section yesterday? :)

Looks like (in case you missed it) the main logo image is being cut off on the right side and the RMI section overflows it's column.

does it still overflow the right collumn?  I think perhaps i fixed.. and yes zymmetrical this is all your fault :)

I went to check out that blog thing and it said it was for smf 1.5 ... mine was out of date so i thought it was time to update it... .. but that is never as easy as it sounds since i have changed a lot of files here and there over time :S

anyhow, please let me know if you find any errors.

Its seems to be evolving everytime I refresh the screen. It looks good. I didn't mind the red for thread titles but that may be too hard to read. The chat disappeared for a while but I see its now back.

one thing:
"a meeting place for microstock photogra..." is cut off (in both Safari and Firefox)

Otherwise very nice work Leaf. :) :)

EDIT - fixed now

is it fixed now.. yeah, i am trying to get the kinks worked out still... so it will probably change a little in the next 24 hours ... hopefully for the better.

Oh cool I feel so pivotal!

I know the feeling, our message forum system on Zymm came up with a new version recently and unfortunately it's a big pain to do the upgrade for exactly the same reason:  little customizations here and there and then you come in with a new theme and everything is overwritten .. but once you see all the new features you get sucked in.

It does look good.

Couple of glitches: the green "New Posts" folder is appearing for forums (like Gimmestock) that haven't seen a post in over a year, and not (the gray folder) for those that have posts today. The Quick Pick create new topic list boxes run over on the right into the forum names.

A complaint/change request is that the tab with the Home/Forum etc. buttons is now way up and to the left of where the forum posts get displayed. What I've always done after reading a post is click the Home button to get a refreshed list of what's been posted. That's now much farther away than it was. All works fine, but just feels less convenient than before.

Edited to add: Firefox 3.x Mac OSX 10.5.x

Leaf -- A few comments on the new skin.
Overall it looks great and the text is a lot crisper and easier to read.   ;D ;D
However, there a few things that I'm noticing that you may wish to check into.  I'm at work (the dull job) and only have a 17" monitor.  A lot doesn't fit properly.  About 3/4 of the avatars get cropped with scroll bars on both the side and bottom.  Likewise on the center frame, where the messages are.  If someone uses the "quote", that pane won't fit and causes one to have to use scroll bars to read the entire message.

None of this, I'm sure, is a problem for those  lucky to have a larger monitor.

I love the new look but I have a question. I'm using IE7 and when I view a thread the post section is no wider than the "view the results" column down the right side making posts a little hard to read other than that looks great!!! ;D ;D

I'm on ie too.  Yes, the column I am reading from is only 4" wide.   Okay for brief posts I guess - but the long ones are tiresome.  And the premium members no longer stand out in the user online list.

Editing the third time... and on my screen I see less than 1cm of peoples avatars (with a arrow bar).

Hehe, Beta2Microstockgroup.

Thanks Tyler.

The main menu should be bigger and closer like it was in the old layout (functional wise)

Exactly the same for me, is there a way to make it wider? Remember I'm no internet geek so simple instructions please ;D

Frankly, it looks cluttered. This new skin wastes a lot of space on a top and sides so there is no advantage of having higher resolution.

« Reply #25 on: September 09, 2008, 13:34 »

yeah, i agree that it looks cluttered.

but how about now?

I have done away with the left side boxes all together to try and free up some screen real estate...

yeah, just click the 'home' button or the 'microstock group...' thing at the top... I should change the default page people are brought to when they log in.  It confused me to!

I think the vertical screen real estate is a bit stretched: on 21" at 1680 x 1050 res the top 1/3rd of the site is 'non active' content such as the logo, main menu, inch-high white space etc.      Since people are here 99.8% of the time to check the message area IMO you gotta squish it all up as high as possible to keep the eye and scrolling activity down..

Not that comfortable with it.

I suppose it takes the eyes a little time to adjust.

In the Forum page, I would like smalle fonts and icons, so navigation is faster/easier.

Also the chat area ould appear at the top, as it is (might be) updated during a session.  I don't check the poll results everyday.

made even better now.  That home button goes to the top of the recent threads now, and not the top of the main page.

Sorry, but: IMO the font absolutely sucks.

Especially the quotes in italic are a pain for my eyes, and the plain white background plus a neon green left border don't help at all. Certainly not every designer's first choice ...

Perhaps Arial or Tahoma or Georgia are oldschool, but at least they are easy to read.

Oh, and a dark grey background with a black font ain't good for the posting previews ... :)

http://editcss.mozdev.org/installation.html

This is a plugin for Firefox that let's you modify CSS on any website to suit your own desires.  You could proto the exact specs you'd like to see and send them on to everyone. I don't think we have a lot of CSS experts on hand here (i'm sure Leaf isn't by trade) so if you say what you want instead of don't want it would be a pretty easy sell I think.

Wow, one of out monitors is way out of calibration.  The green left border on the quote box is quite subdued on my screen, ant the "dark grey" background elsewhere is a soft bluish/gray for me.  And, the line in your message where you specified arial font, looks the same as the others on my screen.

Strange.

Ok, agreed - it's not neon. But in a pretty-close-to-all-kinds-of-gray context it's still quite disturbing. :)

Here's a snapshot of the article preview:

And the dark gray behind the "Ok, agreed ..." line is ~R67G67B67 which is ~75% black, not bluish but simply dark gray ...

Then either your browser cannot handle Arial or your monitor is broke. :)

yeah, i'll try and work on this a bit today. That dark grey bacgkround an black text was a mistake when i was trying to fix the CSS a little.  I also didn't like the green and white quoting colors - which is what i was trying to fix when i introduced those bad preview colors:)

Yeah they to to the last unread post I'd are at least suppsed to. If they went to the first post you would have to reposition the thread every time.
