Penelope, where did you take this.  Aren't you around Georgian Bay?  It's quite a spectacular shot!

The Red River piles up like this occasionally - I've been in Manitoba for 5 years now so I witnessed it once - and it wasn't nearly so beautiful.  Mostly huge dirty blocks of ice covered with straw and muck.  Was quite creepy where it jammed the river at Selkirk and just kept getting bigger and bigger.   Dead silence except for the ice groaning and creaking and the steel bridge screaming under the pressure.

Thanks for the complement Pixart.

This was taken at Sibbalds Point Provincial Park on the south shore of Lake Simcoe near Sutton (about 5 minutes from my house) It is awesome and depending on weather happens almost every year in April. The Ice is so powerful it pushes huge rocks onto the top which hang in the air on ice. The beach is a small pebble stone beach, which is why the ice is so clean. I attempted this shot a few years ago, but I only had a point and shoot.

Old one:  http://www.stockxpert.com/browse.phtml?f=view&id=20063

So I went back this spring to try nail the same shot with my D300. Hence the snappyness.

I would love to be there to listen to it happen. It pushes 30 feet up onto the shore in spots.

I experienced your Red River incident when I was a teen on the Burnt River near Fenelon Falls Ontario - Indeed Creepy!

Cool!  As long as it doesn't wipe out your house when it happens.

Husband's uncle (Jack and Audrey Mills) lives on Lake Simcoe at Pefferlaw.  LOL, you likely do groceries and shopping at all the same places!
