Title: In or Out for Subs on SV?
Post by: snurder on June 16, 2008, 12:04
Well even though I said I wouldn't sign with another new stock, I registered with Snap Village last nite based on Dolgchov's request to test the registration process.

Really don't know too much about the workings there. Is it advisable to opt In or Out for subscriptions on this service?

opting out at this point...there's a global setting for that and pricing so you don't have to do it for each individual image...I'm experiencing "modest" sales there as well (base pricing at $10.00).

i opted out there, when I started with them I didn't think they would have the volume to make it worthwhile and I am not keen on subs.  Would be interested to hear if anyone is getting a lot sub sales, particularly in  light of them now advertising as being cheapest subs program.  on their site sitewhere I noticed the other day that they say 80% of their cataloque is available to subs purchasers.

Well since there were no Fotolia-like comments, I opted in for the time being. This will be one of those "upload when I can" places" for now.

Thanks to thse who took the time to reply. Your comments are all worthwhile.

Hi All -

Thanks to tan510jomast  for pinging me on this thread:

Some info on subscriptions on SnapVillage:

 - Yes, currently 80% of the total SnapVillage library is available for subscription customers. This includes some of the 'big guns' like iofoto and AndresR (among others) who have decided that the extra payments from subscription sales are valuable. Ron Chapple's iofoto team are a smart bunch and keep an eye on the bottom line - so the fact that their images are available on subscription says something.

- Subscription sales are paid at a flat .30 per download currently. One cool thing- as we don't have tiered royalty payments - you get this regardless of your status on the site (don't have to have xx amount of images, or xx amount of sales or the like)

- Yup, you can opt-in or opt-out on an individual image basis. Most other sites don't let you do this.  We know that the process for changing this isn't perfect, and it can be a pain to change an entire large portfolio --- we're happy to change this for you on the backend until we get a better subs. management system running.

- Personally (of course I am a bit biased  ;)  )  opting into subscriptions is a good way to go. Subscription customers behave differently than a customer buying images a la carte - and those "extra" .30 payments can start to help pad your baseline earnings from single image or produce license sales.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have questions.

- Brian (SnapVillage)

Why do sites try and make us believe that a 30 cent payment in a non-tiered systems is a blessing for photographers?

...is the reason why I hate when sites post to the forum and confirm that they have no idea whats going on.  Shutterstock gives 30 cents per download too in a non-tiered system.  123RF is at 36 cents, DT just upped it to 35 cents. -Brian, do you think Snapvillage is special because you pay a 'flat .30 per download'?

How about some FTP?  I've signed up, but refuse to submit until an FTP so I don't have to spend 50 days uploading

Hi Ichiro17 -

You're right - we're clearly not special at .30 per download. Apologies if I didn't have my facts straight or if I sounded like I was "spinning" in my answer. I had been looking at the Fotolia rates earlier today and was thinking of that.

I'd like to continue participating in these forums, but if my presence here is cause for consternation, then I can bow out. I too dislike corporate PR leaking into forums - I'll try to keep that more in mind.

We're working on FTP now - your frustration is understandable. We'd love to get your images up , it pains me that you're not alone. It's our highest priority.

NO BRIAN, I think you have just as much privilege here as anyone of us.
this is a democracy, and if ichiro thinks you don't belong here,
i think that ichiro is talking through both sides of his mouth.

on one hand, some posters complain about the lack of communication
with the site's official, then when you choose to present yourself on this forum, they're stacking the deck against you.

I say Brian stays. Now you're even Brian, one for, one against  ;)

How about I say Ichiro17 does not need to come here if he doesn't want to listen to what brian_SV has to say?
Now Ichiro17 has 2 against and brian_SV has 2 that he stays  8)

ichiro17, I don't know what your alliance is with SS, and I really don't care to know. But if you read carefully what brian_SV said, he made no mention of being SPECIAL. he only  said that there is a non-tiered system.

you don't have to take it so personally and attack someone who voluntarily came to this forum to speak to us about the company he works for.

lastly, as a democracy, I think you can come in here and listen ,
or you don't have to. no one forces brian_SV to come here, and no one forces you ichiro17 to stay away either  ;)

and hey ichiro17 one last thing, take something to pacify that attitude of yours.

fotoKmyst, maybe you should read what I wrote.  I did not say to brian not to post, in fact, I welcome the communication because its a way to make the site hear what you have to say - whether they care enough to do anything about it (and i'm saying that generally) is another debate.  It wasn't a personal attack either.  I didn't make fun of his family, himself or anything for that matter.  I questioned the legitimacy of his statements and how he put them forward.  Just a thought that you might want to read more carefully next time you ask me to take a sedative, because perhaps some coffee could do you some good.

My initial post is to point out that Brian was trying to spin SV as some sort of market hero at .30 cents.  He has acknowledged that it was a mistake on his part, and I respect that he has done that and I'm happy for it.  I don't want to see a Snapvillage representative go because of that.

There is no alliance to SS, in fact, I despise the subscription model immensely.  You failed (again) to read past to the part that mention a plethora of other examples beyond SS that don't use that tiered system.

Lastly, please don't bring the whole democracy thing as a reason for people to talk on the forums (and please use the word correctly).  It is as free a forum as Leaf wants to make it.  This isn't grad 5 where you can 'do what you want because its a free country'.  Democracy generally speaks to how you elect your government and even then, its got its flaws in its administration.  I've been here at the site for a very long time and I value the opinions of most of the contributors because I believe they know more than me on average - and thats why I stay here.

I may have been a bit harsh in the way I tried to make my point, but want I want to get across is that I personally want to see you active in the forums but at the same time I hope that you can keep in mind how you spin things to the photographers.

I apologize if I hi-jacked the thread with my comments, but I thought I'd clear it up with those who decide to take things way out of proportion.

I think it is great that you come here and post Brian (and other agency representatives).  It's nice to get the communication happening in a place less bound by agency forum restrictions. i wish more agencies would be involved :)

Phew, the natives are restless  :o

Well, I am sorry I wasn't here when ichiro made that rhetorical statement  towards brian_SV offer to enlighten us on snurder's topic.

To be quite honest, it was I who invited brian_SV here ,
as I felt we would be better served with someone directly from SV to speak to us.

Regardless of the tone that ensued here, during my absence,
I must thank Brian for being so communicative.
Cheers Brian.

p.s.
btw, what did you ppl eat from breakfast ....yesterday??  ??? ;D
