SnapVillage welcomes buyers from around the world! January 23, 2008
Posted by SnapVillage Team in snapvillage.

We are thrilled to announce that the SnapVillage has now opened its doors to buyers from around the world! When the site opened in June of last year, only users based in the United States were able to purchase from the site. Since then we have received many requests from buyers in Europe and Asia asking to purchase images. Now we are delighted to report that buyers in most countries can purchase images, subject to the dictates of local laws and regulations (the suits made us add this). We are now extending the appeal of our innovative pricing model and super-simple purchase process to buyers worldwide.

This is terrific news for our fast-growing roster of interested buyers, as well as our contributing photographers who now have a whole new worldwide audience of prospective customers! As always, photographers based anywhere in the world can upload and sell their images.

The site is currently only available in English, but we are planning foreign-language versions of SnapVillage for release starting later this year. Images will continue to be priced in US dollars. Buyers from outside the United States will just need a credit card that will allow US dollar-denominated purchases in order to buy an image on the site using our intuitively simple purchase process.

Check out our exciting and creative image collection and see for yourself how easy and straightforward it is to buy an image! Please sign up here for an account on SnapVillage a quick and painless process. And for you photographers, heres another great reason to keep uploading more of your pictures and keep the royalties coming. See you around the Village!

I would suggest SV buys GeckoStock. GS has been programmed marvelously with a MRF section for instance that is as good as the one from Crestock and 123RF. GS is a garage operation with one hell of a programmer but no resources for marketing and SEO. With just a new orange-white template, SV would have it all, working FTP included.

And I also wish SV would stay away from my keywords. I can't find my own pictures back because they change my keywords so they became irrelevant.

As for your statement about GS being operated by a great programmer, I'd agree wholeheartedly. Maybe SV could at least consider licensing the software from him. Would definitely also give Richard some capital to work with.

And as for the keywords - I agree for the most part. I've noticed two schools of thought concerning keywords at SV: 1) leave the keywords in place and add any additional that may fit. 2) Completely rewrite the keywords. The first I don't mind as I may have missed an applicable word or two. The second drives me nuts as my ten or fifteen relevant keywords become 5 or 6.

And for chrissake, can't they leave the titles alone? I gave my image of a clock with the hands set to 11:00 the title "Eleventh Hour". They changed the title to "Clock with Arms Set to Eleven o'clock". That sounds more like the description than a title. As a matter of fact, it is very similar to my description. And since when does a clock have arms? I thought they were called hands.

Just my four bits worth.*

*Adjusted for inflation.

It's not that it is necessary. Just standard, especially for any company that expects to be taken seriously.

Every microstock site should have FTP available. Period.

Sure honey. Ever tried to send a DVD from the rural Philippines? First you have to bribe the postal office, then the customs because every DVD is considered contraband. Sending by DHL is about 90$ or 130 kg of rice. For a site that doesn't sell? No thanks.
I'd prefer to send the pixels in a big bag with horse and carriage.

Istock is different. It is God's Gift to Stock, and (non-exclusive) contributors are mere mortal serfs.
On-topic: if a lonely simple programmer at GeckoStock can set up a flawless FTP on a server at his kitchen table in his spare time, why can't Bill Gates' own Snapvillage do it in aircooled datacenters with leather seats and 21" flatscreens? Perhaps because the best FTP servers run on Unix  ;D

The person at GeckoStock doesn't seem to have been distracted by selling images.  What is the point in a great website with no sales?  I don't mind if SV never has FTP if they can get the downloads.  They are doing quite well considering it is a beta site and they were only selling to US customers.

That was not my point. My point was that if GeckoStock can do it, why not Snapvillage with much deeper pockets? And if Snapvillage can't even make FTP work on a site that's owned by the world's largest software company, what else can they make work? Sales for instance.

But if you got sales there, good for you. I don't. My view count since August is 4-9, except one image that has 90 because it shows some skin. The same image got 4000 views (0 sales) on DT before I disabled it. I like buyers, not voyeurs. So I just store SV in the deep freezer till they deliver some sales.

I have sales there and one payout.  It was only $10 though :)  Much better than most of the other sites that started last year.

I've sold more at Snap Village than at Fotolia.  Acceptance rates are a lot better at Snap Village (so far) than recently at Fotolia, so after months of just letting a small portfolio of images sit there unattended, I have become proactive again and have started to upload and build a better portfolio now at Snapvillage - 5 images at a time!

I had my first $25 sale there today, generating a $7.50 commission.

When I started uploading there, I decided to price all my best microstock photos at $25 and a few photos that are also at macro agencies at $50. This seems to pay off   :)
