The German government has warned web users to find an alternative browser to Internet Explorer to protect security.

The warning from the Federal Office for Information Security comes after Microsoft admitted IE was the weak link in recent attacks on Google's systems.

Microsoft say the security hole can be shut by setting the browser's security zone to "high", although this limits functionality and blocks many websites.

However, German authorities say that even this would not make IE fully safe.

Speaking to BBC News, Graham Cluley of anti-virus firm Sophos said the warning applied to versions 6, 7 and 8 of the browser.

"This is a vulnerability that was announced in the last couple of days. Microsoft have no patch yet and the implication is that this is the same one that exploited on the attacks on Google earlier this week," he said.

This is one of the reasons I use Google Chrome.

The sole purpose of Internet Explorer, its destiny and its raison d'être is to download Mozilla Firefox or Opera.
Internet Explorer fulfils this purpose well.

Google Chrome is pretty sweet. I still use Firefox for most tasks though.

I tried Chrome in the beginning but I found it didn't execute Javascript totally compliant. IE is a PITA for a designer since it still renders CSS in a non W3C compliant way. Firefox is my workhorse and I love the many plugins, like spellcheck and adblock, although it can be very memory hungry (not to say leaky). IE is fine now and then to try a site in a "virgin" way, without all my cookies and passwords.

No kidding I wondering how many trillions of hours worldwide have been total wasted from designers lives from having to write special stylesheets just to cater to all the people who insist on using microsoft ... it's pretty bad. I have to admit IE8 handles everything better but IE6 was such a total nightmare it ruined me on their product forever.

I like firefox. Tried chrome but I don't like the way google are taking over everything and I like all the firefox add-ons.

at the recent browser hacking event everything was cracked exept chrome.

Safari was cracked within seconds!

Click on the plus button to open a new tab. You'll see your main bookmarks in a bar across the top of the page and then there is a "other bookmarks" button that will open a dropdown. I'm not to fond of that feature but that's the only way of browsing bookmarks I've noticed. Well I suppose you could just open the bookmark manager really fast with a Ctrl+Shift+B and then double click your link. Either way I don't like it much.
