I regularly export stock footage to photo-jpeg from After Effects. But since I don't have Mac, I'm not sure what is the best way to export the clip to ProRes 422 (for 4K on iStock, for example) in Windows.

I tried this plugin for AE: newbielink:http://www.dubon.fr/conversion-prores422 [nonactive] , but it gives a way to large files, about 2-5 GB (3 to 4 times bigger than the same photo-jpeg clip). It seems that there is nothing to set in this plugin.

Please, how to that conversion properly?

My 20 second clips (4k) at PR422 are about 1.5 gig. 30 seconds are about 2 gig and slightly higher. If you want to upload a full rez clip to dropbox in jpg i can pull it into final cut pro and output it to 422 and see what i get. we can at least see if the outputs are the same.

Thank you for your offer to test the ProRes422 coding. To your private message I sent the link for the 4 versions of the same 14 second long clip:

There is 4K original 800 MB large photo-jpeg clip, HD version (260MB) and two clips encoded with mentioned Dubon AE plugin: Prores422 Normal (1,4GB) and Prores422 HQ (2,1GB).

Like Getty Images, iStock is not accepting any ProRes file exported on Windows with plugins. Their ESP System can't handle them. Only native Mac files work.
Maybe the ProRes plugins doesn't work properly on PC?

Waiting till Getty offers different codecs...
All other agencies are good with QT_Photo_Jpeg.

Yeah, it will be interesting to read about Mantis results...

Martin

Ok here are my results:

The files I output end in "test".

I output all at 422 normal except for the HQ which I converted to  422HQ.

Looks pretty close to me.

Thanks Mantis. Your results are logical, and should be something like that. But this Windows plugin works wrong or I'm missing something.
Anyway, I think there is still 2GB limit on iStock for 4K clips, so just shorter clips would match.

MartinD, probably you're right. I didn't know that. I haven't tried to upload it to iStock as such (via ESP - Getty Images). There is no problem on other agencies with 4K photo-jpeg files and I hope iStock is going to offer different codecs soon.

In the mean time, does anybody knows some other good AE plugin or a way to encode 4K clips to ProRes422?

You can not use any Windows app or plugin to make a ProRes clip that will be accepted by the Getty ESP.

You may have limited success with FFMPEG but only with very small files.

Your best bet is to buy a cheap used MAC.

The ProRes 422 video format is widely used in the world of audiovisual, but it was not possible to encode in this format using the Windows version of After Effects (Apple has not made it possible). That is why we have developed this plugin, which allows to quickly and easily convert one or multiple video files to this format.

Good to see this subject brought back. I'm considering switching to Windows :'( now that Apple seemingly stopped caring about Pro customers.. What is the current state of ProRes on Windows?

- Quicktime on Windows is capable of playing back ProRes files AFAIK. Any problems with this?
- I know it's possible to make ProRes files with 3rd party plugins. After installing, is ProRes available from Adobe Media Encoder?
- Do the agencies accept ProRes files that are created with 3rd party plugins? (Apparently Getty won't)

Thanks!

@ccbcc:

I can confirm that Quicktime on Windows can play ProRes without any problem.

I don't know the answer to your other questions.
