Filezilla has a 'server-version' on their website too.

hi actually i am trying to use bit torrent for this transfer too.. my friend create a bt file, and i open it in the application, but it doesn't seem to move..i wonder why?

I see no seed but there are many peers.. i find it strange since i don't think there are others can download this file..as peers, and I also no idea why I can't see the seed at all..

for filezilla, i install the filezilla server software..but I can't figure out how to transfer through internet..it seems like u need a hosting space? like a ftp.xxxx.com, anyone can give instructions?

Most people only think of it as a tool for pirates, but BitTorrent is actually a good tool for this kind of thing.  A big advantage is that the transfer can be paused and resumed by either side at any time and the bandwidth usage can be throttled back, so you can use your Internet connection for other things while the transfer is running.

Also, if you are both in the same country or have a means of quick shipping, don't discount the power and convenience of the "sneakernet".  A 32GB flash drive only costs about $20, is quite durable and weighs next to nothing, so shipping costs should also be inexpensive.

How far apart are these computers?

Have you considered an external USB drive? Nice for backup and storage, portable and many other uses.

Dropbox is free?  https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTg3NTUwMjA5

If it's Network as you say, just connect them to the same network, and copy, you don't need software. Drag and drop.

Make multiple files and use DropBox... Make a ZIP file and set the segment size. Send as attachments. You can span a ZIP file, we used to fit very big files onto a dozen Floppy Discs!  :)

Turn one of the computers into a server is what you are trying to do, in which case, you can ftp to yourself.

The original message said... "through a computer network" which is why I had to ask about the easier way.

http://kb.winzip.com/kb/entry/255 Might help?

If you really need to send some big ones, this along with a spanned or segmented archive should do it. No ftp, no installing a server software. 50MB limit per file. FREE

Hope that helps?

Can't you get a free web space with FTP support?

They usually give you a few GB of space for free. Split it up and share FTP info with your friend.

If you have a fast, stable connection and want it easy, just split it into 100, 200MB archives and sent them through MSN Messenger directly.

Or something like this:

I thought there was some way to turn your home computer into a ftp server. (free of course) that would be the easiest solution? Did a search and found one that says, windows 95. The rest are free trial, and I didn't look further. I don't like free trial software, it's always crippled.

Ah Ha, I remembered this discussion and when I was searching a tech site, I noticed this down on the bottom of a page.

How to set up your own FTP server! Now it's not going to be, plug and play, but if someone really wants to transfer their entire collection to someplace else, Ubuntu virtual machine and FREE I thought it was the answer?

http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/smbit/how-to-create-an-ftp-server-on-an-ubuntu-1204-virtual-machine/355?tag=content;siu-container

Personally I have four hosted sites now, I can take a file directory, upload everything, and go to another computer and download everything. You want a back-up and mass storage and the ability to transfer everything you own? Get a domain name, under $10 a year, and pay for hosting, about $100 a year. You now have massive storage, all the transfers you could want, ftp, you own it and it's private and secure.

Drop Box works for projects and allows me to distribute with private links.

But anyway, Free is pretty good too.  :)

There you go, your own virtual server on any computer.
