Title: How to blog?
Post by: madelaide on October 29, 2009, 21:31
I wanted to start a blog to follow the nesting of some of our lovebirds (one of them has already laid five eggs, the other one).  I thought about a blog site, but since I have my own domain and website, I could have it there (mine is not a stock photo site, even if I have photos there, it's basically a personal site).

It seems Wordpress is the most famous software to build a blog, but Hawkhost shows other options (B2evolution and Nucleous). Wordpress has a version in Portuguese to download directly, B2evolution has what it seems a more complicate procedure.

I am considering have a dual language - actually a copy in English of the blog.

Any comments on these two packages?

I think that any kind of blogging or tweeting is totally wasting of time and contamination in WWW search results.
You will be proud to anounce new noise in search result  ;D

I use Wordpress as well. There are also a number of free options like Blogger.com or Wordpress.com too.

Don't hesistate: use WordPress. It's very light and easy to manage by a non-IT person. The other platforms might have more advanced possibilities but they are more time-consuming to manage. Many free templates and plugins available.

Wordpress you can't go wrong,

I recommend it to all of my clients who have various styles of website including joomla, plain html, and integrations between the two.

I have a stand alone wordpress blog and have installed six for clients, and I am extremely impressed with their attention to security, but what really sells me on their Free package is the ease of use - with a few plugins you can autoupdate, backup, restore,  they have a robust spam thwarting system, and you can change themes in a few seconds if your in a redecorating mood.

On one of my word press blogs I have the 'slidepress' plugin which is the port for slide show professional for wordpress which can handle images and video. but there are other image gallery plugins and video modules that are  open source non commercial

the automatic update of plugins features however are what I love about wordpress, no more downloading revised core code and ftpying to sites, its all done automatically after you click the steps.

Google eats up wordpress blog metadata like candy and theres even a goggle analytics plugin

and with the html side bar widgets you can add http://www.projecthoneypot.org/home.php (http://www.projecthoneypot.org/home.php)  honeypots to helps nab spammers and harvesters.

just my opinion...

I do turnkey installs too, mostly in WordPress and Joomla. The Joomla customers keep returning when they screwed up something, since the relation between articles, categories, menu links and plugin position can be very counter-intuitive. The WordPress customers never return, and I see their content growing.

I agree 100% wordpress, if you have your own domain with php and mysql and the skills to deploy the application, use the standalone from www.wordpress.org (http://www.wordpress.org), this gives you more plugin options, and there are thousands, galleries, adsense etc:

Anyone that has no hosting plan or skills can use the online shared version www.wordpress.com (http://www.wordpress.com).

To the OP:
If you need a custom WordPress theme give me a PM, I am testing some template software and it would be usefull to me to have a small theme project to do.

The product I am using is Artisteer which creates templates for a few well know frameworks, I created a template for my digitalweblogistics blog (http://www.digitalweblogistics.com/blog) in an hour, there is an affiliate link to Artisteer on my blog post as well.

Great link. Thanks. Does it also allow to generate templates for sale from our own image products?

You can generate the Joomla!™, WordPress™, Drupal™, Blogger™, DotNetNuke™ and HTML templates for 'Commercial Resale', you can use and include the Artisteer headers and backgrounds but you cannot include the sample images when you resell.

There is a free trial download which watermarks the templates until you buy, there is a lite "Wordpress and Html only version" or the full package which I have, if you get some good design ideas I am working on a little contributor website for selling a limited set of web elements via PayPal PPD and a wordpress plug-in.

You can also generate the template open up the folder and just replace the images with your own resized images.

David

Sounds obvious. But with the full 130$ purchase, you are free to sell as you wish? I don't like the workarounds, since it seems unfair to them. Next week or so, I'll try their demo.

Quote from: Artisteer FAQ
Can I resell or redistribute exported Wordpress™, Joomla!™, Drupal™ and Web Templates?
Yes, as long as you do not include Artisteer photo objects within your header (Header -> Foreground Photo), as those photos are licensed from a 3rd party only for your own use or in your consulting work. You may re-distribute any other designs you create, including those with Artisteer header background photos (Header -> Background), glares, page backgrounds and other provided graphics, and your own photo objects.
NOTE: The above restriction applies only to templates created for sale. There are not restrictions on creating individual web designs and templates for yourself and your clients.

Can I use my own images within the header?
Yes, select the option "Insert Picture from File..." within the Image list.

They say no problems with their graphics and your images!

Another happy wordpress user - i just dont advice trying to switch web hosts :) I just lost about a week's worth of production time.  Finally all back up and running.  Being able to figure out basic code, by looking at it helps you tremendously.  But, you can still do a lot with WP even without any previous web design knowledge.

Thanks all for the replies.  Wordpress, it is.  I will install it in my website perhaps this weekend and start to play.

The reason I don't want a free blog host is that I want the freedom of having ads or not, plus the advantage of having all in my own website.

One question: since I want to build a page in two languages (something I may want also in the future, if I decide to have a photo blog), is it possible to have both versions in the same folder?

I am a little late to the part here, but I agree - Wordpress gets my vote too.

For the language thing just search for 'language' or something in the add-ons.  Here is one that looks like it might fit your needs

I'll take a look, Leaf. I was not exactly looking for translator, but this seems to speed things up. I am a bit concerned about some complaints on the forum.  There is also a forum at the Brazilian worldpress download site, maybe someone there has already tried it.

And take a look at Window Live Writer for the actual writing of the blog articles.

What is the advantage of this? As I haven't yet used WP, I don't know what limitations it has, or how complicate it may be to enter a text with formatting (bold, italic, etc) and photos.

Maria,
The WordPress editor is a pain for inserting images and getting the wysiwyg formatting.  Live Writer makes it much easier to see the finished product.  It takes a lot less fiddling.

Any hints or should I contact my host admin?

Solved. Looked at their forum and apparently there is some extra character in my config file.  I edited it in Notepad, so it's odd. I only solved it when I edited the file directly on my host - not that I could find a blank space or special character, I simply retyped the first line.   ???

Now, language again.  WP Portuguese comes with two themes in which everything in written in Portuguese.  If I donwload a new theme, I get things in English (like "1 comment" instead of "1 comentário").  I understand from the original themes that I need translation files (pt_BR.mo and pt_BR.po). I tried to copy them to the new theme I wanted, but it doesn't work.

Dont use notepad to edit source code for webpages, it adds hidden characters and such that get read on host platforms like nix etc..

editing on site as you did works or download one of many tru text editors

http://www.textpad.com/ (http://www.textpad.com/)  not free but im partial to it
heres the wiki on text vrs word processors

Ok, it seems I have to edit all the php files in order to have things in Portuguese.  This ain't easy.  I only changed the elements in the first page so far.

Now, when I try to edit what is already written there using the admin tool page, I only manage to edit the title, not the content.  I type my new words in the text field, I click the update button, I get a message on top saying it was updated, but the old text remains there (and is reloaded in the edit box too).  No error msgs this time.

Wasn't Wordpress supposed to be straightforward?   ::)

PS: this latest problem seems to be related with FF. It works in IE. Geez, what's going on here??

Hmm.  Saw one old discussion in WP forum, deleted cookies, reloaded - works now.  I hope it is permanent.

I use Joomla but if you don't have any need for the extra power I would recommend WP hands down for a blogging platform.
