I have a few dvds that I would like to watch on a portable player, or on my laptop without the disk.

Does anyone have a good recommendation of a dvd ripping program?

You using Windows, Linux or Mac? dvd::rip if you're on Linux, can't help you for the other two. :-).

Having said that, I of course wouldn't condone ripping DVD's. It's just plain wrong...

why should ripping a dvd be wrong. I own the dvd. I just want to watch it on something other than a tv. It is no different than ripping a cd to put on my mp3 player.

I'm always amused by how Google Adwords works by setting up this thread you have essentially answered your own question as these adverts appear for dubious sites.

i just see a couple ads for encryption software, or how to set passwords for websites :S

If there was a dvd ripping add however, i would be sceptical to if it was good. I am hoping to save myself downloading 10 programs to find one that is worth using.

I have three little girls and they destroy our DVDs all the time. So I backup all my DVDs on to DVD+R, and when they destory a DVD I only have to waste $.50 to replace it from the original. At www.dvdrhelp.com you can learn everything you would ever want to know about DVDs. They have a list of common ripping tools at http://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=7#7 . My suggestion is DVD Shrink, it is no longer supported but it is one of the best. And best of all it is free. It will transfer any DVD to a DVD+/-R and will store it locally onto your hard drive. Hoped I helped.
