Just thought i would give this program a plug because I love it so much.

when I download pictures from a memory card I like to have control.  I want to name it a very specific name, and download it to very specific spots.

When I download images from the memory card they get a name like
2007-04-29-1423`23
I have only found one program that is able to give it a name like that, and that is [wiki=digital image mover]DIM[/wiki]
[wiki]Adobe bridge[/wiki] renames images pretty well too on download, but not to the extent that DIM can.

Another thing... if you are shooting with a point and shoot, it seems lots of programs just get the picture, or just the video.  DIM can easily get both.

Another favorite feature is DIM can also save your pictures in too spots on download so they are automatically backed up..

last favorite feature is it's free :).... oh yeah and it runs in java so it is a very 'light' program.... so well done to the guy who created it.

I second that. DIM is what I use also, and it's a very neat little software. I began renaming my files in a similar format (20080429_122705.jpg) last year when I got myself a 40D and kept my 350D as a second body. That way, no risk of conflicting filenames when shooting with both bodies. I just have to keep the date/time synchronized on both bodies.

And another neat feature of DIM is that it can automatically create subfolders named after the year, month, day, or whatever format string you want. You can include a "job name" (%J) or a "client name" (%L) that you define each time you start a new transfer. Click on the help button in the settings dialog to see a list of placeholders.

I also renamed my files within Bridge before, but now DIM is my default image manager.

oh yeah.. I forgot about that folder thing.  I do that too.  I create a folder for the day the images were taken such as 2008-04-29

but when downloading from my wife's point and shoot they get put in just a monthly folder.. so all shots are put in the correct months folder even if they are downloaded at separate times.

The nice thing about having the image names as date and time is that when shooting with two cameras as once (and switching between the two) the images will be named in the order the images were actually taken.   If you rename your files with a sequential number (like lots of programs want to add) they will be organized by the order they were downloaded into the computer (very annoying)

DIM sounds very similar to Downloader Pro, which I have used quite a bit.

Some features that are not mentioned in DIM that Downloader Pro has are:

GPS Geo-Tagging
IPTC XMP support
Automatic lossless rotation
Automatic tagging of JPEGs with color profiles
Automatic adjustment of dpi settings of JPEGs
DNG Converter plug-in

Downloader Pro costs $29.95.

You can check out some of the features of Downloader Pro here:

On a related note, a warning for Lightroom users. When I came back from my trip in India, I tried to rename my images (shot with 2 bodies) within Lightroom following the same date/time scheme, and some photos were not sorted in the correct order. I discovered that those photos had been renamed after a date/time slightly different from the correct EXIF date/time. It seems Lightroom has a bug in the interpretation of the EXIF timestamp.

This bug seems to be well known.

That's why I used Bridge instead (before discovering DIM recently).
