Title: screen capture video software

Can anyone share their experience with video screen capture software... I want to record a few simple tutorials for newbies on various programs. and offer them up either on my blog or client space.

Ive seen some good tutorials offered by members here and hope i might be able to get some good advice about which program to use.

I think there are only two real big players.

They are

Camtasia Studio and Captivate (adobe)

The adobe one is quite a bit more expensive and I haven't tried it, so I don't know if it is better, but Camtasia has a cool zoom feature that works good for things like photoshop tutorials.  They both have a month trial though, so check them out.

Also look up something called SnagIt by Techsmith. I have old version 8 I think, and for the limited amount I use it, works well. Might be an option.

I think you might be better off using photoshop if you have it.  I hadn't heard of it before but it looks like SnagIt is mostly for stills.  When I opened the 'video walkthrough' they have on the site the first thing that comes on the screen is 'created with Camtasia Studio' ;)

One site I check out for their tutorials uses

"CamStudio (http://camstudio.org/) is freely available and is open-source software. Used with the free CamStudio Lossless codec, the video quality is outstanding at the price of a very large AVI file."

But it will produce a SWF as well, I have yet to use it so I don't know how well it works. It appears there is a bug that SWF files will only play with IE, you can fix it yourself by editing the html file.

I may use for giving tech support to my dad it may be easier than explaining things over the phone.

Thanks for the responses Leaf and Fintastique.

I downloaded camtasia and its nice and slick as far as recording goes - I haven't completed and delivered a tut yet with it.

That is a lot along the lines of what I will be doing is helping family members out with their support questions lol

heres a typical message:

Me: "ok click start and select control panel"
Them "ok where do I find Start"....
