Author Topic: March 31, 2014 - Last day for Adobe PS CC $9.99 deal (Read 4762 times)

Unless Adobe extends again their PS+LR CC introductory offer, March 31 is the last day to get PS CC at $9.99/month.
As I recollect, Adobe extended this offer several times. They started with $19.99, then dropped the price to $9.99 with Sep 30 2013 deadline, another offer followed till Dec 31, then Feb 28 2014, and the last extension was March 31. I wonder if they will extend it again, and what the regular price for 2014/2015 season will be.

Coincidentally, Topaz Labs DeNoise at 50% off deal, ends also today.
This plugin costs now only $40, is more effective for noise reduction than LR or PS, and you can use it forever (unlike the Adobe monthly rentals).

I ranted about CC being subscription-only when it came out, and I still feel that way about it. As someone that needs more than just Photoshop, I'd be looking at a minimum $30/month cost, but more likely I'd have to go with the $50/month Complete plan to get PS, AI, and Indesign (I still do some client work and need Indesign).

I recently got CS6, and I'll be staying with that version for a long time. I used CS4 for over 3 years, and I expect to get at least that much usage out of CS6. In 2 years I'd have spent as much on CC as I did on CS6. As long as I use CS6 for at least 2 years, I'm saving money.

First, I don't believe them. They've extended this more than once already, and they'll keep extending the deal because there's a chunk of folks who won't bite at their subscription model. They could offer it at 1 cent a month and I wouldn't buy it because once you're on that hamster wheel they have you and the price will then go up.

I have CS6 for Photoshop and Illustrator and Lightroom 5 (all perpetual licenses) so I'm good for a long time. I have seen nothing in the new features for CC that's in the least bit interesting.

I am also in the same camp. There are actually some new features in the PS CC that would be of interest to me, but I don't like the rental model. Paying $120 for a year or $240 for two is not that much, but once you stop paying, you don't have anything.

It seems that there are quite a few people who think likewise. That would explain why Adobe has extended that deadline several times, trying to hook more users.

I understand that CC actually stands for Credit Card.

I actually need to buy LR5 right now because I've used Nikon Capture NX2 for years, and Nikon just dropped support for it (the jerks). So I'll have to cough up $140. The CC offer sounds good at $10 a month but I'm absolutely sure they'll raise it after a year. And I don't like the idea of Adobe having my VISA number.

Don't even mention credit card and Adobe in one sentence.

Last year, I ordered online from the Adobe LR 5 upgrade and gave them my credit card data. Next day, I got an email from Adobe, that the order could not be fulfilled, without any explanation what was the problem. I called them and couldn't get through, just assumed that they were not able to process the credit card. Which was in good standing. The same day, I purchased with the same credit cards some Topaz plugins.
Then I ordered the LR upgrade on disk from Henrys, the biggest camera store in Canada. They just ran out of stock and although they re-ordered it, it took over 4 weeks to get it from Adobe. What an outfit! (I mean Adobe, not Henrys)

To add insult to injury, one month later Adobe let the hackers in and all customer data was stolen. Including the credit cards.

The problem is that while Adobe now wants everything on a subscription that's tied to their servers, they're not a big cloud computing company, and are going to find out they've committed to a big and expensive undertaking. The ease with which they were hacked soon after the CC went live should have been the wakeup call, but I'm betting they took little real action after that because it's just not their thing.

It's not clear to me just how tied to the cloud the current CC products are, after installation, but at minimum they probably need to log in every time they boot up, and Adobe (unlike ordinary web merchants) will be retaining those VISA numbers between transactions.

I'm not going there with them.

Per previous post, I need to buy LR5. I can get it from Amazon for about $140, but there are all sorts of copies available for half that or less from private sellers on Amazon or Ebay. Most are apparently selliing 'bundled' copies that came with cameras. Is there any reason I would not want one of those copies?

It's aggravating because I downloaded the trial and all I need is the key, I don't want to wait a week to receive a disc in the mail, but there seem to be no discounted downloads or keys on offer.

I don't think that statement is correct. If you stop paying, you can still open any Merged Layers version of the file in CS6. You can also open layered versions of the file in CS6, but any CC adjustments won't show up.

Yes, you have the files, a non-functioning program, and memories (how the program used to work). Unlike LR or other program with a perpetual license.

The CC idea only makes sense for the most prolific of users. The problem for Adobe is that PS is maxed out for most users. The only reason to upgrade is because they don't allow color profile downloads for newer cameras on older versions. And I doubt people are upgrading cameras like they used to either. Once it's got 4 wheels and looks like a tractor and all you have need for is a tractor, why would it matter if it has a digital dash?

All software products - if they live long enough - get to this point, where it's difficult to add enough value to continue selling upgrades. The best known example of course is the Windows OS. I don't use PS myself but I get the feeling that a lot of people are going to be using CS6 for a very long time.

There will certainly be huge advances in digital photography, but right now nothing earthshaking is happening.

This seems to be exactly where Adobe is at right now. They just can't add enough new features to every version. At this point some new app icons are probably considered a big upgrade. I guess CC was inevitable. But I also think it will have a more negative effect on Adobe than previously thought. Especially among non-photographers. Not needing the upgrades for camera compatibility, you can go a pretty long time on old version of Adobe products. If I really think about it, I could probably still be using Illustrator CS1 and not experience much inconvenience.

Microsoft still allows the regular purchase along their cloud products which Adobe will probably offer as well....

Are those the last two versions that aren't Creative Cloud? Might be a good time for me to do the final upgrade. I think I have CS3 and LR2.

CS6 is the last non-cloud version. I just got mine a few weeks ago. I was going to wait for the price to come down more but I'm not sure that it will, especially with this one being the last non-cloud edition. Typically if you wait a couple of years after a version is released you can get it much cheaper, but I'm not sure that's the case this time around.
