What is a good free FTP software?  I was just about to download Filezilla to my new computer.  It's what I've always used - but thought it would be a good time to check if there is anything better I should look at.   Also, what is a good site to download from?  Thanks gang.

I use Fire FTP for Firefox, nice and simple, no problems.

FileZilla for me too, though like you I haven't really looked at any others for some time.

FileZilla is good and free but you can only upload to one site at once. This is why I bought SmartFTP, with it you can upload to many sites at the same time.

Usually I upload 10 to 15 files to 14 sites before I go to bed, and when I wake up everything is uploaded. It's only a matter of a few minutes on each site to complete the uploading process.

Edited ti add:

Oops, just notice that you were looking for a free FTP client. Before I bought SmartFTP I did some research and could not find a free one that had the multi connection option... this was the most important option in my case.

I might be wrong, but when I was using FireFTP (free) I remember being able to upload to more than one site at once.

Thanks nialat.  I see that SmartFTP is only $36.95 though, so that is almost free.  Uploading to more than one site at at time is a great feature.

I really like SmartFTP. Its multi upload feature is very useful.

Does anyone use Fetch? It's inexpensive and I've used it for many years on my Macs.

I tried several and I happily use Filezilla for the last ~1.5 years

I use Transmit on my Mac.  Reasonably priced and works very well.

Yes, you can have up to 10 concurrent transfers.

I had mentioned SmartFTP above, but based on that last quote of yours, you might want to try http://www.isyndica.com/photos

I ftp to several local printers, it looks like Isyndica doesn't work outside of their agency list.  Although it looks fantastic, I'm not a huge uploader so $9.95 per month vs free doesn't make sense right now (especially when FT is going to reject everything I send anyway :( ).  Somtimes though I say, man oh man I should just shoot stock for a living and give up this chasing invoices and wiping little soccer star's noses.  If that day comes, I would go for Isyndica!

hlth - if you have an affiliate code you should post it here for Isyndica.

Actually: iSyndica supports FTP so you can connect directly to your local printers. You mention $9.95 but there is a free subscription (pay as you go) and a $4.99/month. Feel free to message me if you have any questions and I can help you get setup.

You can queue up your files and FTP them to multiple sites using filezilla.

See this thread:

Hi All,

I use Captain FTP but if you find one that works well for you I would stick with it. If it ain't broke don't fix it  :)

Best,
Jonathan

I don't want to hijack this post but can people offer why they like the FTP they use. What makes it easy, has it had any bugs. I can say for Captain FTP before their newest upgrade sometimes it would have trouble throwing files away correctly but they seem to have fixed that bug.

Best,
Jonathan

I guess little changes in FTP so there's not much comment here?

for me it's got to be smartftp, but the version I have costs $50, the reason: its the only one with multi upload, and by that I don't mean you can have more than one concurrent connection, I mean you can select a bunch of files then select several or all of your websites and then with a single click they go into the queue, submitting each file to each site in turn (al a my video at
Guide to FTP for the Microstock Photographer
)

but now isyndica came along poor old smart doesn't see much action!

I am using Cushy Stock for multi upload to the different stocks. Because I am using an older version of Cushy Stock until now (1.8.5), it doesn't work well for Featurepics. So I use Filezilla for Featurepics uploading. In Cushy I do all the titles, descriptions and keywording, then the uploading to all the selected stocksites together. When I come back home, all is uploaded an I only have to submit the files. Also for stocks that doesn't support FTP, I can do the titles and so on in Cushy. The stocks can read the IPTC data.
Only for Istock I have to copy and paste the info from Cushy to the website when uploading a file. Recently I discovered about iptc and xmp (see other topic about iptc).
I use the up-loader on the website for Zymmetrical, because when I upload with Cushystock or Filezilla the images don't show up on the site. (And yes, I did upload them to the subfolder.)
Filezilla works fine, but it doesn't show thumbnails of the images, only the names of the images. Cushy stock shows all: the thumbnails, the names and the iptc info.
When a site is down, or there are ftp problems on a site, images in Cushy stock get a "failed to upload'. Next time I can easy select the failed uploads to try again.
