I have a 30D, and I am trying to make my workflow more efficient.  I shoot in RAW and am trying to find a good, fast viewer.

For those of you that own a Canon, what do you use to view RAW files?

I use ACDSeePro.  I really like it and do some minor editing with it also, can't say it's real fast though.

I use Canon's Digital Photo Professional that came with my 5D.  I use it for my editing and viewing.  I also have Adobe Camera Raw but haven't really used it much.  I like Canon's DPP surprisingly well.  I also use ACDSeePro for viewing but it's not very fast.

Unfortunately, the Microsoft patch that allows you to view Canon RAW files doesn't work for the 30d (but works for the 20d).  It's very strange.

If you are just viewing files and culling out the bad stuff from a batch or want to do some speedy type stuff, I recommend the FastStone image viewer.  It is free and I know a few "pros" that use it a lot.  I've learned to use a lot of its features and I like it.  It also allows you to view other file formats like .psd and will even allow you to save a .psd as a .jpg (or allow you to save from one format to another)  It's avalaible for download here:

Try Silkypix they have a free trial version which just works a tread. SY

I second that.

I don't use the Pro version, but this software is a cornerstone to my business. I just can't say enough about it!

My gf uses ACDC, which works fine for JPGs. But it is far to slow for serious use if you shoot RAW.

It also doesn't work for the EOS 400D unfortunately

Try Ivan Image Converter to view, edit and convert your Canon Raw files (CR2, CRW), it converts Canon raw to jpeg, gif, bmp, png, etc. (>40 output formats) in batch mode. Find more info here: http://www.ivanview.com/converter/canon-raw-cr2-crw-converter.html

Im not at my desktop right now, but I seem to remember that Irfanview worked for my G9 .CR2 RAW files.  I'll have to give that breeze browser a try.

If you just want to view them to sort or tag then Photo Mechanic pops them up much faster than Lightroom or Bridge. That is all I use it for because it shows the images so fast they upload in a jiff, then I change to another software once I have edited.

Irfanview opens my CR2 files taken in 400D.

I never bothered shooting RAW before I got Lightroom because dealing with the files was such a hassle.  Since getting Lightroom there is virtually no difference between working with RAW files and jpegs.   LR has definitely streamlined my workflow.

I use Rawshooter (I have the Rawshooter essential 2006 version), it is a freeware, can't remember where exactly I downloaded it from. It has made my post processing a whole lot faster. I have even gone back to my old RAW files of the past 2 years and cleaned those up.

You can select to view all your Raw files as thumbnails/or larger size, you can sort them (and delete the bad ones). Any post processing you make to the image is saved as RW settings, once you are happy with the result, you do the conversion, essentially it duplicates the RAW file and convert the copy, converted image (in tiff) is saved in a separate folder. Your original RAW file is intact.

I use Camera Raw and Bridge and Photoshop CS4.

I used rawshooter for awhile too as it came free with my Corel PSP 10 cd.  It worked quite nicely, especially considering that it was free, but it was orphaned back in 2007 I believe so I imagine it will only open older RAW files.  I love LR though and is certainly worth the price for anyone who is serious about shooting RAW.

Hi Eppic,

Some of the newer raw files have a different extension than the old ones. You might want to try the same extension for your new files that don't open for your software to what your older extensions that work use. Just an idea but it might work.

LR2 and Picasa3 reads both CRW and CR2. Since I switched to Lightroom I do not know how CaptureOne is doing but I guess most of commercial RAW software is updated periodically.

Capture One is supposed to bring the best results. Something about the way it processes files. I noticed big difference compared to Adobe Raw converter few years ago(less noise, smoother looking images), but now, when I compare it to Lightroom - no difference at all. Besides, there are a lot of free or cheap presets for Lightroom out there, and almost none for Capture one.
