Title: Wich FTP client?
Post by: Alatriste on March 25, 2008, 18:59
Hello.

What FTP program do you usually use?

I used to work with Smart FTP. You can put files in the queu for upload to multiple sites. Also you can see thumbnails in the folder to recognice quickly the images.
Its freeware
But the last time I have updated I noticed a problem when pausing and resuming hte uploads.

I havent tried Filezilla but it looks too simple.

Wich are your preferences?

I used to use Smart FTP too but started having problems. Fire FTP plugin as mentioned above is great. Works right out of the Firefox browser.

I have installed fireftp to try it. Is there the possibility to see thumbnails in your local folder? Its important for me because all my file names are similar

Filezilla doesnt have thumbnail presentation. Does it?

Well. I can always drag the files from other window...

I use FTP surfer - only thing I don't like is that you can't upload the same folder of images to all your sites at once.  You have to upload to one site at a time, otherwise you get all sorts of errors.  I am on a PC now, but I used to use FETCH on my mac - that was the best ftp ever, I could dump one folder to as many sites as I wanted, all at once!

I also use FTP Surfer.  Small, reliable, no frills but doing its job.  The only problem is when you're uploading at the same time using a web browser, FTP Surfer considers that the files are "in use" and don't upload them.

Adelaide

What about if you close the program or shut down the computer?
Does it continue the upload where it stopped last time?
So do smart ftp when it worked fine.

Open a terminal console and type ftp at the prompt. Windows has built in ftp too.

If you're a fan of SmartFTP but the newer versions have problems, simply use an older version.

Just Google "old version smart ftp (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=old+version+smart+ftp&btnG=Search)" and you'll find heaps to download.  I'm using 2.5.1005 and it's fine for me.

Can you instal an older version above the last?

Used to use AceFTP a lot, than switched to FlashFXP. Lately using FTPRush. Works great.

p.s.: Tried Filezilla in its first iterations, buggy ones, and can't stop hating it.

What ftp program is there that allows you to upload the same images to multiple ftp sites at once?  OR like madelaide also commented, at the same time as you're uploading them to a website like istockphoto.com or something.

Don't blame me if this wrecks your computer, but I "believe" SmartFTP is one of those simple apps where it's all run out of the core .exe file.  Try it at your own peril.  I'd suggest creating a backup of your Favourites and uninstalling your existing copy first.

I do this with SmartFTP as you can have as many simultaneous upload threads as you like. If you sort your upload queue appropriately you can have 10 files going to 10 different agencies at once.

As this is a "normal" FTP program (outside the browser) you can do whatever you like with iStockphoto uploading and anything else - they're completely separate.

So far SmartFTP is the closest thing I can find to allowing me to easily upload to all of my sites at once, or at least to schedule the uploads...

Is there anything else that allows multiple uploads to all of the sites simultaneously?  I'm really sick of using FTP Surfer and dragging/dropping every 10 or 15 minutes, all afternoon or all evening long.  I feel like I'm a enslaved to the computer.

I tried the rest of the ones mentioned in this thread, and didn't like any of them.

Used to use Smart FTP and am now happy with Core FTP.

Core is the same as FTP Surfer, what I'm using now.  One connection at a time, and no way to schedule uploads to all of my micros.  ???

Cyberduck / Mac

If I had a Mac, this wouldnt be an issue - I'd be using Cyberduck or Fetch.

I can't believe everyone else here on PC is uploading one site at a time...

I use WS_FTP for my istockvideo work.  I like the way it makes it easy to keep your various sites open, or at least accessible.

It doesn't schedule but I just run multiple instances of it for more than one site.

Thanks for all of your input, guys and gals.

I've switched to using Cushy Stock, and am loving it.  It works for all of my sites except for Alamy and iStock, but at least for iStock we have Deep Meta (www.deepmeta.com)  It's great to be able to just "set it and forget it" with my daily batches.

Cushy doesnt work with istock? it is in the list of sites supported..
If it doenst work with all sites (or all the important ones) I think I prefer to stay with smartftp and deepmeta

I just tried CoreFtp LE and it does allow queing of files to multiple sites. Only the interface is a bit non intuitive.

Basically, one has to connect to each site, one by one, right click on files to upload and choose "Queue", then disconnect. Repeat the same for all the sites, and then click on "Process queue". CoreFTP LE then connects to sites one by one and uploads the selected images.

I think I can live with the way the scheduling is done. At least I don't need to sit by the computer and wait to switch between sites.

I really wondered that no one mentioned Total Commander
of course you can upload simultaneously to multiple sites (just make the hook "send in the background" at the sending dialog.)

Like others, I was using Smart FTP, but I began to have all sorts of problems with it. Also, as I recall, it began nagging me to buy an upgraded version (I think it was that program).

I switched to Filezilla and never looked back. Yes, it's simple, but that's the beauty of it. Works like a charm, every time.

I use the programme Prostockmaster for SS, FT, DT, StockXpert, BS, Canstock, 123rf and Istock (it works fine)
For the rest I use Cyberduck to upload to the other sites

I use ProStockMaster and Total Commander. Total Commander can also be used as an alternative for windows explorer.

I think the best ftp client for the microstock sites is FTPRush..
With the script feature you may upload with the only one click whole of batch to the many microstock's FTP servers.

I use FTP Surfer, very simple and free.  I read good things about Filezilla, but it seems so heavier.  Even without a HD space problem in the new PC, I always favour "slim" software.

How much of the commented ftp clients have can show thumbnails of the jpgs in the folder apart from smart ftp?

Since it is not free anymore Im trying not to buy it in this Crisis time...

AceFTP pro 3 shows thumbnails for both local and remote directories, the version I have has a nag screen about registering but so far it has not forced me to stop using it, having said that I don't use it for microstock uploads.

I tend to use SmartFTP pro edition for uploading to microstock sites, (yes its not free) it's the only one I know of that has a multi upload feature that can add multiple images to all of your microstock sites with just a couple of clicks; but I've been thinking of migrating to cushystock which is the same price because it ads istockphoto into the workflow

I recorded a demo of the multiupload at http://youtube.com/watch?v=PjHIlxeRn2M
