Is anyone running Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan and using Lightroom. Last year I upgraded to Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan when it came out and it was not compatible with Lightroom 4 and PS CS5. My entire system went down. I had to restore my Mac back to its original operating system and I have not upgraded to the newer OSX. This bothers me because I would like to be using Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan but I need my Adobe Software to work.

Thanks

Why do you want to use an imperfect operating system?
Do you really need it?
And which Adobe software can't you run with Mavericks or Yosemite?

Unfortunately it is well known that the stable version of OsX never arrives before the X.X.5 update since Snow Leopard (and after the X.X.5 update they generally upgrade to X+1.0.0 :D )

I am using Lightroom on El Capitan on one of my machines. Luckily, without problems.

I was just reading about this. Everyone seems to be having issues.

Since I went back to using CS5, I am going to stick with Mavericks. Everything runs smoothly, why open up a can of worms. I miss a few of the features in CC, but I am ok sacrificing them for a system that runs well.

Yep. Maybe in updates they will iron out the kinks with el capitan and older adobe suites.

Thanks for posting. My LR has many problems under ElCap. But then it had problems under the last OS but not as bad as this one. I don't know if it's Adobe of Apple but I wish someone would stop the MerryGoRound of upgrades and stabilize the systems.

Amen to that.

Ive mentioned in another thread that CS4 software is incompatible with the newest osx. I have learned the hard way when using illustrator and kept on crashing for no apparent reason. Im sure both companies are in favor of you spending more money so they are just big penis heads in my eyes.

I've been using Lightroom 4 with El Capitan. I haven't seen any problems. The new operating system fixed some of the issues I was having in Photoshop and Illustrator. I'd recommend the upgrade.

This is a known issue with both Apple and Adobe. I have several hours invested in talking with both companies tech support. It is an Apple El Capitan issue. Bridge and Lightroom are both affected. The last message received from Adobe is they are waiting for Apple to upgrade El Capitan OS.

El Capitan is a crippled OS.

Normally I'm on Apple's cheering squad but lately I am more and more disappointed with them. They barrel along expecting everyone to follow with zero consideration that there might be something people use there systems for besides making FB updates.

I recommend before upgrading to a new OS is to clone your entire machine onto an external usb hard drive. Then if you run into any difficult to manage software issues. It is pretty fast to restore the clone from your usb hard drive back to your machine.

I had to revert back from El Capitan because Lightroom no longer talked to the D800 via tether. This is a known issue by Adobe and Nikon. My printer also stopped working due to lack of updated driver.

I agree. SuperDuper is excellent for that. You don't have to pay but if you agree that it is excellent then you should. You can also boot and run from a cloned drive in the event of a drive failure.

Why simply don't use TimeMachine?

Any update on these issues, have they fixed the problems now that its been a year?

I had problems with CS5, but the recent updates fixed most of the problems. Make sure you download the latest Java update (watching out for them trying to set Yahoo as your homepage) as well.

Why should you need to have Java installed to use Lightroom?

I tried El Capitan but quickly returned to Mavericks.
Shouldnt they workout all the incompatibilities before dumping them on us?

Good to know. I am still at Mavericks and CS5 and think i will stay there since everything is working great. And yes, they should work out the incompatibilities, but they never do. Better to get it out there and let the rest of the world do their beta testing for them. After all, we work for free, their developers don't.

I have made a clean install of 10.11
I have 10.11.4 installed (combo update) and Lightroom 6.4
I have absolutely no problem (using Lightroom at least 4 hours a day)
And I have no problem with the other CS6 components (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc)

It is known that the CS5 is not compatible with El Capitan (and has some issue with Yosemite too)
So why play the odds, and then come whimpering that it does not work?
If you want to use El Capitan you have to update your software.

I completely agree that we are not free beta testers, and I am a little tired of this way of doing practiced by many software companies (or web sites). For this reason I never upgrade when a system or a software reach a new version and prefer to wait some months (some updates) to do it.

I was thinking El Capitan had been around long enough to upgrade - how is it with Photoshop CC and LR CC? Any experience?
I'm currently running my Macbook and iMac with Yosemite 10.10.5 and all has been smooth sailing, but I'd like to upgrade but have been afraid to take the chance.

I use Carbon Copy Cloner for backup - it gives you a bootable drive. I relied on Time Machine in the past and when a lightning strike took out my two computers and my primary backup drive all at once, the Time Machine backup was useless because it had run out of space and had stopped backing up everything 6 months before without giving me any type of warning. If you have huge photo files Time Machine really isn't the best choice IMHO - it's geared toward the average consumer, not professional photographers.

It's frustrating that MACs are the pro's choice but they seem to be catering to the average consumer without taking our needs into consideration sometimes. It was like when they decided to make it so you couldn't upload a CF card to the iPad at all - and of course there are no CF card slots on MACS so you need a cord or separate unit. Early on, I used to update right away - and learned the hard way that it was a mistake back in the days of LR 3.

Of course, the automatic Windows update messed up everything for my husband, and he doesn't have any sophisticated software on his PC. They all use us as free beta testers.

Well that is the problem right, having to upgrade all your software is not cheap. I have PS CS5 and don't want to pay for Photoshop again since the version I have does what I need, and then Lightroom too! The other thing I don't like is that Photoshop went to subscription so if I am correct and maybe I am not, but my understanding is they no longer sell you the actual software, you are leasing it month to month! Can you even use the newest Photoshop if your internet is down?

The dilemma is that I want to own my software and still use it on the newest Mac OSX. Also Mac no longer offers its older OSX versions for download.

You don't need to connect to the internet to use Photoshop CC - you just need to be connected minimum once a month as it checks your system and sends upgrades. I was leery of the subscription but I like having the latest version of the Photoshop tools and it's under $12 a month so really not bad for PS and LR CC, although I kept my version of Photoshop CS5 just in case I ever want to go back to it though at this point I'd miss all the newer tools.
