Title: Is it worth uploading to Stocksy?
Post by: danielstassen on November 26, 2023, 23:05
Hi everyone,

I’m thinking of uploading some of my future collections exclusively to Stocky (if they accept my application :) ).

For long time contributors to that agency, is it worth it? Are you happy with your earnings?

Regards,

Daniel

Hi Daniel,
I have 11k images in my portfolio, if I am a full-time stock photographer is thanks to Stocksy.

Haha. 🤭Now watch every one flock over there to join like chickens to feed! So crazy.  I'm sure once that happens, sadly they will lower contributor earnings.
Sigh.......☹️

Thanks for your reply.

I will definitely apply to see if I have something they believe I can add to their collections.

I doubt that will happen.
They have been known to be the best earning agency for pretty much for everyone they accept for a long time and they are very strict about who they accept. I never got accepted and I earn my living with microstock, so my photos can't be that bad.

You just didn't plaster a random VSCO/RNI films preset before submission bwahahaha

Also it helps if you shoot everything in fullframe with 35/50mm f/1.4, fully open  ;D

altho some portfolios... I question how they got there... https://www.stocksy.com/davemills/showcase?page=1 (https://www.stocksy.com/davemills/showcase?page=1)

Why? There’s some pretty powerful and astonishing images in there.

Hi Daniel,

What about videographers on Stocksy? Do they also make a better living than on microstock agencies?

I often read comments about Stocksy from photographers but I have yet to read any from videographers.

I am not aware of people who are only videographers on stocksy.

Because the content is exclusive, you have to upload both the photos and the videos of the same series. You cannot send stocksy the photos and the videos elsewhere.

Many people do both, but I really cannot tell you if videos sell better there than what you would make by supplying all the video agencies with non exclusive content.

With my few videos I think I would have made more money if I sent them elsewhere. But the photos of the series certainly earned a lot more than if they had been indie content.

But my port is very small, so this is just a personal opinion, not general fact.

But there is no question that stocksy has a very large group of artist who make a full time living from stock.

They provide spectacular content.

They would probably also make a full time living from stock if they had sent their material as indie everywhere.

But focussing on stocksy saves a lot of time and depending on the content it makes sense to offer it in specialized place with high prices.

Obviously the really high ranking and earning ports do both: they supply the micros AND have a specialized port on stocksy.

Thanks for your insights.

I must say I’m intrigued.

I will be applying to Stocksy by the end of the year. They will tell me of my content is what they’re looking for or not.

Good luck. Sadly none of my friends ever made it. Hope you fare better.

If they don't take you, remember a Getty house contract is also a very good deal, many people still make a full time living supplying Getty directly (not via the istock contract).

There are also other places, Westend61, Cavan, Offset?, Adobe Premium?

But most of all, if you have fantastic content you can still make a full time living supplying the various micros.

Yes, the individual sales are small but it all adds up and the returns are very consistent.

With high priced content there are huge swings in earnings.

Hi,

I want to follow up this topic, because so far only Cobalt provided her experience with video sales with Stocky (thank you, Cobalt!)

Does anybody else can provide insights on whether a video contributor can make a living on stocksy?

Of course, I’d prefer insights from actual contributors ☺️

Thank you

Not having any other video contributors providing insights on the performance of stocksy in selling videos speaks volumes :)

I must conclude that stocksy is best for photographers.

Not sure that's the right conclusion, I think we just don't have many contributors on this forum that got accepted to Stocksy in the first place, probably just a handful, and they happen to be photo contributors only.  And if you don't have anyone who got accepted into Stockys who is a video contributor, you just don't have anyone to tell their experience.

Like I said, I have never seen a video only port on stocksy. That does not mean they don‘t exist.

Why don‘t you browse the video section and see if you can find a video only contributor?

You can also write to the stocksy team and ask them if video only is something they are looking for.

Please tell me, do all 10 photographs need to pass for admission to Stocksy?
