Title: How Downloadable Collections Will Work
Post by: Leo Blanchette on June 27, 2013, 13:01
By request, I'm posting a quick summary of how collections will work. I think I did this already, but the description must have been lacking much.

A collection will be its own "type", and will be constructed differently.

It will have its own category type, where images in that category are assigned to the associated collection.

Prices of collections will be determined as the sum of all image prices, most likely discounted by you by a given amount.

Collections will have a special graphic you make - completely controlled by you - a description, as well as the listing of images below it.

Upon purchase, all images will be assigned to the download area.

The collection plugin will be sold as an upgrade.

There is the possibility that you will be able to download a zip of images to save the customer work, but ZIP features do not work on all hosts as I've learned. We will see how we go about that.

Collections were my main income on clipartillustration.com before the overhaul.

not sure what you mean by category type -- do you mean in our category list?  would there be a category named 'collection'?

i currently have a category for collections, but also list each collection in its appropriate category -- eg http://cascoly-images.com/pix/image-type/humananatomy-images/page/2/ (http://cascoly-images.com/pix/image-type/humananatomy-images/page/2/)  contains the anatomy collection

-- need option for size of image, so we dont have to make multiple collections just due to size

-- each image when displayed singly should have a link to any collections it's part of.  easiest would be to add a field to image "in collection", and only then would need to search to find it in collections. (just a T/F flag in the image file, since an image may be in multiple collections)

I should elaborate.

Right now images have their own custom post type that wordpress recognizes.

Collections will have their own custom post type, and be classed differently.

Collections will have an attached taxonomy (we loosely refer to as a category). All images in that taxonomy are part of the collection.

Collections will have a small-medium-large availability just like an image. When you buy the collection, the applicable sizes are assigned to download area.

ok, that's clearer -- there are too many 'category' types around, so it gets confusing

so collections can have image categories assigned to them?

how will collections be put together?  how do we select which images to include?

will collections show a 'contact sheet' of all images in the collection?
