This isn't generally done, but as long as we are focusing on image processing and reprocessing, lets think about finishing this optional feature: watermarking thumbnail previews.

Take this search page of mine here - http://www.clipartillustrations.com/search-images/cute/

Its perfectly possible to snatch any of those and use it for web use in an article, avatar, etc.

The thing I noticed with watermarked thumbnails is seeing the re-occurring thumbnail pattern stamped on every search result is a little irritating.

So the problem is, how do you make a good protective watermark and at the same time keep it looking presentable on a search page?

If anyone would like to design it, that would be great.

In the meantime, I had been experimenting with little "dot" patterns but never really followed through with it.

I did some suggestions, but i think watermark for thumbs area really necessary. They can be used in several ways. Or, at least, be an optional resource, like watermark used in image page. Maybe a checkbox? Use watermark for thumbs ( ) yes  (  ) no.

What about a dot pattern over whole image? Those are good but it makes a repetitious pattern over many results

I would like to have watermarks on thumbnails, and from reading through the above posts it was something that was being considered, did this idea get any further or was stopped because no one was interested?

Thanks

At the moment, watermarks are not added to thumbnails.  Someone would need to change the code to make that happen.

Hmm, just to throw this out there:

By watermarking our thumbnails, we're trying to make people buy our images that they intend to use for a 80x80 pixel avatar?

No, not necessarily.  A lot of images are useful at a very small size.

For example, alphabetic characters, buttons, sports balls, icons, etc.

Very good point. I'm just very hesitant to add a watermark to the thumbnails...

I am as well.

I have been thinking about either reducing the size of the thumbnails, or adding watermarks selectively to images that I feel would benefit from them.

I'm going to have a section on my site which will have icons and these could easily be 'borrowed' from the thumbnail without a watermark, I have also been looking through other SYS sites and one that caught my eye was stompstock.com, they have such great small images that I can see people 'borrowing' them to use them on their websites at that small size.

I think Leo's idea of even just having a few small/half dozen dots on the image would be better than nothing, and would keep the image very clear but it would be reasonably obvious that it had been copied from somewhere.

I could be wrong, but I don't think any of the stock web sites watermark their thumbs. Given the small size, I'd be very leery of making it so hard for the legitimate buyer to get a sense of the images they're looking over that they give up and go elsewhere. I also don't recall hearing of any issues with stolen thumbnails - has this been a big issue?

I would very much like it to be an optional feature so those of us who would prefer to leave their thumbs as is may do so (and I can live with a kludge like having an empty PNG watermark file if that's the only way to get no watermark)

That might be a good option. I was thinking that the thumbs look good without a watermark, and since the watermark on my large image is pretty robust, I decided that an "uncluttered" thumb would be helpful to the buyer. I think that adding a watermark to the large image addresses the thief issue, and not watermarking the thumbs caters to the buyer. Maybe a good compromise.

But I do see the point of having a watermark with vector and logo images.

It would be great if we could have the option to use our own watermark like the full image one and maybe have a tick box to turn it off or on depending on the developers requirements.

I was thinking if a thumbnail watermark feature isn't going to be added, does anybody know of a good freeware or open source watermark program I could you use to watermark my thumbnail images manually?

You can use ImageMagick manually.
