Title: Backing Up to DropBox
Post by: gsheldon on July 15, 2013, 16:13
Just thought I'd mention this to everyone:

There is a free WordPress plugin that allows you to do an auto backup of your site to DropBox.  I have been testing this plugin, and so far, it seems to be playing nicely with my Symbiosite.

All you need is a free Dropbox account, and you put the plugin on auto.  The WordPress plugin is: WordPress Backup to Dropbox and it is here: http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-backup-to-dropbox/ (http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-backup-to-dropbox/)

Ron, I'm curious about this and want to add a guide to SymbioGuides on it, is Bluehost backing up your complete site files AND your WordPress database?  Also, is it automatic?  I have gotten notices from them occasionally that once your account reaches a certain number of files they don't do their automatic backups anymore so mine haven't been active for a while.  I was also under the impression that it doesn't include database back up.

justhost also offers free backup -- your entire site can be retrieved - 1 day old, 1 week old or 1 month old.  (unfortunately) I had a chance to test it out when I inadvertently deleted the wrong folder - they were quickly able to get me back up and running.  some types of restore you can do from the cpanel, other require their help.

Bluehost does a routine daily backup and I have called support and asked to have my site restored, early on, when I messed up my WP site. Unfortunately they didn't have the latest and they don't back up the database. They now have a feature you can purchase, which makes it easier to backup and restore.

But for free they also allow you to backup your whole website yourself, including database. I do that routinely, no, it is not automatic. Be advised I have less than 500 images and it takes 15-30 minutes to backup. I usually do it last thing at the end of the day and just let it run while I watch TV. In fact, think I will do one tonight.

You can do it in cpanel>File Management>Site Backup Pro. I choose the Full cpanel backup.

Thanks Cathy, I'll do that tonight and write it up in the knowledge base.  I know they advertise automatic back ups on many hosts but it usually doesn't include database as well, so it's important people don't rely on the auto host back up without checking.

I'll give the Drobox plugin George lists a try as well, it's probably good to have a hosted back up and one of your own if you're the paranoid type like me :)

On the database backup front we use the WP-DBManager plugin on all Wordpress sites. This not only backs up the database on a schedule (we use a 3-day cycle) to a nominated folder, but can email you a copy so you have it locally.

All child theme modding and the little core WP hacking we do is done locally in Dreamweaver and uploaded, so we can recreate the site very quickly. Dropbox might be worth considering for images at $9.99/month for 100GB, in case Bluehost disappears completely.

I'm using the Snapshot plugin by WPMUdev which will let you backup everything Wordpress including database and uploads folder.
You can choose storage destinations (like FTP, dropbox, amazon s3 or a folder on your server, or all of it) and you can schedule automatic backups.
http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/snapshot/ (http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/snapshot/)

But I'm using it only for 2 days now so I can't really say how stable or reliable it is.
