Title: Ftp backup
Post by: picture5469 on September 04, 2013, 08:37
Hi

Can someone help me with the ftp backup. I have copied the whole of "public_html" directory. Does this literally back up the whole site? Does it back up the data tables?

It should, but it is hard to say without actually seeing what is in it.

You can compare what you have in your backup against what I listed in this post:

Does it back up the data tables?

It all depends.  Are you or your host backing up your MySQL database and putting it in a directory under public_html?

It backs up your site but not the database. If you have access to your cpanel, you can go to your database and export for a backup. Check on your hosts website, they will probably tell you how to do it. There is no easy answer because it depends on your host.

I eventually went to the host' s backup section and downloaded it from there, it is a small file so I am hoping they have it right this time

Thanks, Its a good job im on unlimited, the whole public html folder is 25.8gb
I can go back further in the directory tree and back up more should I?
If I back up the whole tree from :/ will it include the databases?

Where are your database backups being stored?

No, the database is usually not part of your public_html folder, except you have created DB backups there.

Seriously, the easiest way is to login via SSH, create a database dump, create an entire website archive and download it to a location of your choice. If you look at this post, I described my backup with UpdraftPlus, including what directories it's grabbing (not the whole web root). There is an add on to do FTP or a secure version of the files it creates, so this WP plugin can do it for you (base is free but the more files option is $15 and the FTP option is $10 (I think)

I'm using the plugin BackUpWordPress, which sends me a daily email with my datbase attached.
