Hi and welcome :)

http://www.symbiostock.com/ (http://www.symbiostock.com/) for domain suggestion and downloading the Theme for the first time.

Yes it is a Wordpress Theme but this can be installed within the cPanel on your domain - this will make more sense when you get domain -
Pictorial Tutorial  in this thread  (justhost looks the same as bluehost so don't worry about the difference)
 http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock-hosting/installing-wordpress-%28via-justhost%29/ (http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock-hosting/installing-wordpress-%28via-justhost%29/)

Then to get you started - after this you can visit the Help Page within Symbiostock

Tutorial for Symbiostock Arcitum to be read in conjunction with the help pages.

Hopefully this will help you with getting started with the Symbiostock Arcitum, Stock Image networking theme created by Leo Blanchette. This tutorial was created for early V2

I will assume you already have Wordpress installed on your site with only the default settings.

Install and Activate Symbiostock Arcitum,  Within Wordpress go to Appearence, Themes, Install Themes and upload from your computer

Although it is not essential I would also recommend you repeat this procedure with the Symbiostock Child theme, then if you ever decide to edit any of the css you will not have to re-edit if you update the parent theme.

Now take time to look around and familiarise yourself with the various areas especially:

Appearance – menus and widgets.
Users – your profile area
Settings – general and Permalinks
Symbiostock (bee) – the heart of the networking area, especially take note of the Symbiostock Help tab!
Images (ladybird) – image control

You will find lots of helpful links as you look around.

1.
Settings Tabs
You need to make two changes here
General – tick the box marked "Membership – "Anyone can Register " then Save
Permalinks – under "Common Settings, select "Post" then Save

PLUS

See Leo's tutorials which he created early on but are still worth watching as many tips included, they are in Post 2 of this thread

I had never done this before Mtkang, and I managed to get mine up in a few days. Its really straight forward. A little knowledge of FTP and websites will help you a great deal though. If you have any questions just ask.

You just need a domain, and web storage. Bluehost will give you all in one package. Just choose a domain name. Check if its free. Then get a subscription at bluehost and then on the cpanel (their admin control section) you can auto install WordPress. Once WordPress is installed, just install Symbiostock theme and you are done with the basics. Then you just need to configure symbiostock and upload your images. Confguring symbiostock is the most work where you need to most help, but its all still very simple. It just looks difficult because you dont know what functionallity it all has. But Leo has created help link for every section of Symbiostock and once you are done you will ask yourself, was that all.

I am currently using another provider for my website  - ipower.
They also have wordpress and so far, I've been happy with them. Adding another website to the same account wouldn't cost me anything.

So, I'm wondering whether I should install symbiostock site on my existing ipower server or if Bluehost offers a better performance or some other advantages.

1. Has anybody compared ipower (or another provider) with Bluehost?

2. Since most symbiostock sites seem to reside on Bluehost, one would assume that the inter-site connections on the same physical server should be faster than if each site is on a different server. If they are not on the same physical server (one would assume that they use multiple servers), maybe in the future with the aim to improve the inter-connectivity and user experience, we could request re-allocation of all symbiostock sites to the same physical server.
Are these assumptions valid?

3.  Can you set-up multiple wordpress sites on Bluehost (i.e. symbiostock as a photo collection and a separate blogsite or ecommerce site) ? If so, would one wordpress installation handle all these entities, or would it better to have a separate wordpress installation for each site?

Thanks in advance,

Les

Hi Les,
Probably the best thing is to try your current provider and see if it works, or not ifnyou rjn now into the same sorts of problemsnghat godaddy users do.

I do not use bluehost but something that seems identical.  I have a blog within my symbiostock site,  which is a subdomain of my photography site

I used to be with ipower, if you get good tech support from them you could stay there. I think they are comparable to bluehost. I had questions when i first set up wordpress and bluehost was very helpful. You might need ipowers help in the beginning.

Christine...your post is visible but nobody reads post 1. :-)

It might be better if we are all NOT on bluehost.

If we have links, trackbacks etc all coming from a small number of IP addresses Google might not like it....

I think this SEO thing is now causing people to get a little paranoid, no offence  :)

And what do you think about the performance issues re: connectivity between the individual Symbiostock sites (as I outlined in my previous post)? Would there be a difference in connection times if all sites are on one physical server vs spread-out over multiple providers?

I am not an expert. But my guess would be things get slowed down mostly by the response time of the shared server (that we get with cheap hosting offers) and not by the actual data transfer time. Only the latter might be much shorter if we'd be all on the same host.

Does symbiostock.com still exist or is the site just temporarily down?
Wanted to give it a try but can't reach the site to download the theme.

I guess the site is temporarily down - if you want to get started now rather than waiting till Leo puts it up again, pm me with your email address and I can send you a version that is a couple of weeks old to get you started.  Do you have hosting - Bluehost or similar and a clean install of Wordpress with nothing else in it so you can start.

Yes, I have just installed WP on my webspace.
I have to leave for a photo assignment now but will be back on my desk in a few hours. If the site is still down then, I'll shoot you a PM with my email. Thanks for your help.
