I did a test transaction this morning and the Paypal emails contained the stuff about being "eligible for Seller Protection" and postal requirements.

Is it worth using the PayPal Digital Goods facility so that these aren't an issue? Are there any other benefits or downsides?

What are the panel's thoughts?

A DG transaction is never eligible for seller protection. There is no physical product, hence no tracking number. When there is a spoof case or unauthorized transaction or chargeback, you will always lose the case, if its SNAD or NR case you will get to keep the money.

Thanks Ron. Seems odd that Paypal's terms for DGs are not as advantageous as their standard terms. Commissions seem comparable.

Is there an upside?

There is no way of returning a digital good so PayPal cant guarantee anything to the seller. If they would protect all DG transactions they would go bust because it that case its too easy to commit fraud. Its the same with IS refunding chargebacks to their buyers and taking the sale away from the contributor. Its too easy to abuse that system. PP wont get into that as they understand it better then IS. The upside is that SNAD and NR cases are won by the seller, which is not always the case with physical goods.

Ron - what does SNAD and NR stand for?  Trying to figure out what you're referring to here.

SNAD stands for "significantly not as described" and NR is "not received". You sometimes see "INR" which is "item not received".
