Title: Recommended Extras
Post by: FiledIMAGE on August 19, 2013, 20:43
Alright ive taken the plunge. Setup the site and thrown some images for testing up. Will try and do all logos tonight. I was wondering if many are using the child theme or the official plugins and for site analysis etc. I see the sitemap tool looks great. Ther clean theme looks good too. Just wondering if people are sticking with base setup or going this.

I'm using the basic setup with the child theme.  I haven't purchased any plugins or the theme since my budget is $0.  I'm also using Yoast for SEO though I've read that some people use both Yoast and Leo's plugin.

I'm also not sure how relatively hard it would be to update from the child theme to the clean theme as I don't think I've seen that discussed before.

I have updated from the standard child theme to clean theme 2 without any problems.  That is the only plugin I have purchased at this time.  I have added several free plugins for social media, spam control, slides shows, google analytics, SEO, etc.  You kind of just work thru the process of seeing what you like and don't like and then start searching Wordpress for a plugin.  Many plugins have a free version and a paid version so you can decide if the additional features are worth it.

For an old geek like me this is actually fun to play with all the capabilities that WordPress and Symbiostock provide.  Other great thing is all the help you can get from the Symbiostock forum.  A great group of people with amazing depth of knowledge.  Leo has created a wonderful tool in Symbiostock and this group of people is really digging into it capabilities.

Have fun, but backup your site often.

Welcome Chris. I would recommend wordfence (free security plugin, which also allows you to watch the traffic of your site) and Leo's sitemap-plugin (15 $).

Yes, I wouldn't want to run my site without them. I should also mention SYXtra by Plrang, which is free and provides a bunch of additional features and widgets you can activate if you like them. The mouse-over previews alone are worth installing it. :)

I have stuck with the Child theme.  I don't want to put a lot of money into the website until I can see that it will at least cover the initial costs that I have put into it.

I have the basic child theme and free plugins, I'm at the stage where the investment is minimal but I'm looking for an element of success before I invest more $, I have tried in the past with Photoshelter and never got a sale or significant traffic. Symbiostock has already far exceeded the Photoshelter experience I had because of the forums we have here and the willingness of other artists to share information and help get your site online and functioning well.
