How do you know if that new registered user is spam

You basically won't until they try to post something in comments.  I have two registered users right now and so far they haven't proven to be spammers yet...they also haven't purchased anything so who knows.

I will tell this though, when I had a php nuke site about a million years ago someone came on and registered and two to three months later then decided to spam my site.

Leave them be unless they do something like spam posts.

My site is globally closed to comments so I am pretty sure  I don't get many spam registrations.

Registration number is high compared to sales because symbiostock pushes you to registration.

You can't even highlight an image size without registering,  thus the high number of registrations.

As soon as you click on any given size, the registration window pops up.. registration number is bound to be high with this system, which I think no one should complain as it gives site owners a lot of email addresses they can use for various promotional campaigns.

Ironic ... on a thread about spam :)

Certainly in the EU and some non EU european countries, wouldn't a business doing business with EU customers and collecting email addresses like that then be legally required to register under data protection legislation ?

Perhaps a simple way around having to bother with that might be to have your IT team set it up such that the login details are hashed and you cannot actually see them.

I have actually mentioned in my privacy policy that I do not spam the buyers and that I only collect their email for improving customer service and sending downloaded files if needed

I'll have to look my FAQ over and see if I have stated the same.  I'll do that while I'm updating it later.

I had thought about a newsletter format but I don't know if that would even be possible or if I could have the time to maintain one either.

Many places, at minimum, you will be required to provide opt outs from receiving email. Your national or state govt websites are the place to look for the rules re data protection.

Yes, i think that us folks here in the US, if we were to send out any emails, would adhere to CAN-SPAM requirements.  :)

The sentence about Paypal and storing of payment details is a good one. Would you mind if I reword and add to my Privacy Policy?

Well I agree with all you said.. I am not saying go out and spam people :)

I have never used people's emails apart from sending them download links in case they didn't get them.. so only for customer service really..

I am only saying having email addresses is good (not for selling data) but to send the occasional newsletter and stuff like that and of course along with an opt out..

I hate spammers and spam emails.. I really do.. but I DON'T hate people who send the promotional emails with the ability to opt out..

My privacy policy also states that I won't send unsolicited emails.. and that's a promise I kept and will always keep..

But all of us have as much right as microstock agencies to promote our sites.. what's the harm in it? of course everybody should play by the rules.. where in my post did you see the ironic part?

google the email address and you know.

Thanks for that tip.  I found that 7 out of the 9 registrations that I had were spam.  I recently added CAPTCHA to the registration process to eliminate spam.  Since then, I have only had one registration (but at least I have a good idea that it is a real person).

You are welcome guys.

I noticed that for a real user, the username is somewhat similar to the email address pre fix
