Title: Releasing my First Symbiostock Child Theme
Post by: Amanda_K on April 30, 2013, 20:36
I'm ready to put Clean Theme for Symbiostock out as the first official third party Symbiostock child theme!  You can view the demo here: http://www.creativembers.com/symbiothemes/ (http://www.creativembers.com/symbiothemes/)

As this is a first on several levels, I humbly request your gentleness if I need to work out a few kinks.  I'm super excited to get some themes out there to start promoting Symbiostock and the principal behind the project.  Hopefully people who are on the fence about jumping in due to lack of design knowledge or customization skills will be happy to see some plug and play options.

I've set up a support forum for the theme itself to deal with specific questions directly, (trying to keep MSG clean, and support streamlined) but if you any questions feel free to message me here. I have plans to add more themes in the near future, and will be adding features/patches to this theme as details in the parent theme get ironed out.  Free updates are included as upgrades happen.

My road map for future development is taking shape, one of the first things I hope to get added is a working custom options panel that would allow you to choose colors without having to edit any CSS. I'm always open to suggestions and requests.

Soooo......here's where you can get Clean Theme 1.0.0:
http://www.creativembers.com/clean-theme-1-0-0-released/ (http://www.creativembers.com/clean-theme-1-0-0-released/)

Customizing a Child Theme - TUTORIAL

If you want to make color changes or edit fonts etc:

http://www.creativembers.com/customizing-a-symbiostock-child-theme/ (http://www.creativembers.com/customizing-a-symbiostock-child-theme/)

Do you have something totally different in mind for a theme? Send me your ideas.  Also I'm getting ready to do some video tutorials tomorrow, (on general Symbiostock topics and/or customization) please send me your requests!

Was looking forward to this! Definitely the best "First child theme" I could have hoped for...but this is awesome even for a public child theme of any sort.

EDIT: I don't know if you've already done this, but often theme creators will release their theme with a lot of wordpress.org plugin zip files attached, thus allowing people to quickly plug in all the features you may be using. For instance if you suggest a certain contact form, or slideshow...anything you use on the demo can be automatically downloaded with it to save people time.

That's terrific!  And tempting too...  I'm slogging along with trying to customize my own but it's like I'm doing it with my eyes closed and one hand behind my back.  I have no experience in this type of programming.  I may just have to bail and purchase a theme.  Child themes will be a great asset to get more people involved.

I wanna my site with same layout show at http://www.creativembers.com/symbiothemes/ (http://www.creativembers.com/symbiothemes/)

Right now, site looks like below. I'm using in my page "home" a template named "home page CTAs"

(http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/2743/retwp.jpg)

Where is my fault? I try others templates but i have no success. Thanks for any help.

Hi Chico!  So for the demo home page I put the slider in the "Home Page - Above the Content" Side bar, this way you can make the slider full width and the main content (text) will line up with your "See also" widget (as long as you have placed that in the "Home Page - Beside Content" widget area.

Here's what I did to set up the demo:

1) I installed Enhanced Text Widget, free from Wordpress plug-in directory here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/enhanced-text-widget/ (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/enhanced-text-widget/) and placed an instance of that in the "Home Page Above Content" sidebar.  This allows you to use shortcodes to display the slider.

2) I use the free version of the Soliloqy slider which can be installed from the Wordpress plug in directory here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/soliloquy-lite/ (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/soliloquy-lite/) and create a slider that is 1130px wide (my height was 300px but you can play with this)  Once you've created a slider it will tell you what shortcode to use for it, ie: [soliloquy id="75"] so you just pop that into your Enhanced Text widget and you should be good to go.

Let me know if that clears it up! I'll write up a tutorial on this with some screenshots and post on my blog tomorrow in case anyone wants to follow along.

Hi Amanda
Am I likely to be able to correct the current errors in my theme (wide footer, some text in FAQ's, Eula etc overrunning page) if I buy yours and then try adapting it as you seem to have the widths of everything level which I have been unable to get right.  I am almost there I think but it just needs a few tweaks that I cannot work out.
Title: Re: Releasing my First Symbiostock Child Theme

It's Amanda, actually but Gillian is floating around here somewhere :)  I've been meaning to update my display name on here anyway, thanks for the reminder!

It looks like you've made a lot of adjustments, you'd certainly be able to make your customizations to this theme as well, though it would take some time to recreate what you currently have, and unless you are doing a child of a child them (I'm going to look into this further) it might be a few extra steps to update.

Can you do me a favor and send me a message with a summary of the main changes you've made and the bugs you still want to fix (other than the footer?)  It's a bit late here, but I can take a look tomorrow for you and see what we can figure out.

Yes, just replace SY child theme by this one.

there's no way to set up a child of a child is there?  eg, if we're interested in using a 3rd-party child theme & still want to make our own adjustments later?
Title: Re: Releasing my First Symbiostock Child Theme
Post by: Amanda_K on May 01, 2013, 12:31
Hi Cascoly, that can be doneso the short answer is yes, but...as you might expect it gets a bit trickier the deeper you go  Give me maybe a day or two and I will finish my research and see if I can find or make a good tutorial.  The better way to go about this is probably being able to save theme options if we are talking about color and font changes so right now I'm focusing on getting a working "Theme Options Panel" going either to add to this theme or to put in future versions depending on what people want. That would hopefully allow you to change things like color, background images and heading fonts without having to mess with code, and be able to save between updates.

Thanks Chico for helping Cathy and for the cool screenshot :)  That bar I'm using at the top of my site is pretty cool, it's called Foobar and there is a lite version available here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/foobar-notifications-lite/ (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/foobar-notifications-lite/) and a commercial version with a ton of features here: http://codecanyon.net/item/foobar-wordpress-notification-bars/411466 (http://codecanyon.net/item/foobar-wordpress-notification-bars/411466)  I think I'll make a blog post with a review of the ones I'm using on CartoonPictureShop, so many cool plugins around!

Tinny, I'll take a look over what you sent me and get back today, thanks!

Just bought it, thankyou for producing this. (Interesting the sale site makes you choose a Canadian province - I'm now in Alberta, I'm sure it is nice there :) - took me five minutes to find the download link in the email but eventually got there :))

Anyway, it all looks good, but a feature request if I may. Is it possible to remove the images / blog dropdown in the child theme? (I've hacked it out of the main theme a couple of times, but each time I update it does the Arnold Schwarznegger and comes back :))

Just cut and paste 9lives answer picked from other topic. I did it and works fine.

"Hi guys, just saw this. I got this working with help from theruchos! But I actually edited the search form.  for some reason every CSS trick I tried gave me search errors. If anyone else has that problem this is how I did it.

You edit the searchform_symbiostock.php to make the change, now I have a copy of this file in my child theme because I made some adjustments to the header.

The lines that need to be edited are Lines 27 to 33 which read:

<select id="select_type" name="post_type" >

        <option value="image">Images</option>

        <option value="post">Blog</option>

</select>

You replace that with just one line:

<input type="hidden" name="post_type" value="image" />

That's it! I suggest maybe making a duplicate of your child theme to try it if you are unsure, otherwise just a back up and you should be fine.  Hope that helps! If you have questions feel free to message me."

actually, I was concerned about additional elements that I might add that didn't relate to the thee -- eg, statistical routines or other tracking and reports

Hi Phil, thanks!  I'll have to check the store, I'm in Canada myself so I know it's an option but a couple of people from other countries purchased with no problems so I think it may just localize for everyone!

I don't want to disable the search in the main theme since some people may want it, but what I can do easily is add a "twin" version of the theme with drop down removed as an option.  I'll get that put together as a freebie to anyone who purchased it already.  I can email you the download link as soon as I have it set up.

On another note, since some people asked  if you are going to customize the theme further there is a way to do this without touching the child theme code so you'll be able to save between updates.  Please see the tutorial linked above and comment with any questions!

Uh oh. I've already made a bunch of changes to your css. oopsie.

I think I can copy all of your child theme code and save in text wrangler. Then reload the child theme, then make the changes in custom css. Will that work?

edit: to answer my own question, yes it will work. I just did it.

Looking good - you got a few responsive issues. I just checked your site to see if they were the same issues I have, and they are.

Have a look here and you will see what I mean   http://www.studiopress.com/responsive/ (http://www.studiopress.com/responsive/)

I guess a css hack will work for now while we are in beta.

Chico that looks awesome!

That responsive testing site is cool but it's not entirely accurate.  I have an iPhone and the search bar doesn't really wrap like that on a screen that size.  It's also been tested on an iPad and a couple of Galaxy android phones.

The responsiveness could probably still use a bit of work, I do plan to upgrade the menu in the future.   Beyond that I don't know if I plan on getting super detailed with responsiveness for tiny screens since realistically most designers searching for images aren't going to be working on their phones.

Edit:  Did you take out your menu drop down with CSS?  Also the graphics in your home page side bar don't show on small screens.  Can you send me a message with your edits and I'll see if we can get it working?

me neither :)

I think the alignment issues such as search and the thumbnails will eventually be fixed by Leo.

From our side we can setup a class to remove excessive content to make it easier to view on a small device.

I haven't tried yet but the css would be something like

.for-mobile{
   display: none;
  }

Its late here. I'll have a go tomorrow.

The 320 looks exactly the same on my iPhone except there is no blue bar at the top. There is a very large gap between the slider and the intro.

I agree most designers do not search for images on their iPhone, but some do :)  Hey, we are in the age of Responsive Web Design!

Hmmm, I'm not sure whats going on with that space, it's not appearing on the demo site so maybe something that was added in the side bar.

For fun, I did a screen shot of the demo site on my iPhone vs the preview on the Studiopress site, attached.  Just a note, if you remove the drop down in the menu with CSS it will cause issues, so it's best to do it through the actual search template's php.  It seems like people want this out in general so I may just make it a feature?

Reef, I'm open to tips on making things more responsive, (menu update is already in the works) :)  I've tried to make sure it looks nice enough on a phone or an iPad that a designer would want to check it out more thoroughly.

I had a quick look at your site a few days ago and it looked awesome. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it has anything to do with your template. The issues go back to the root template Leo created. And I know he is under pressure with more serious coding than this so......  that's why I mentioned we may have to hack it ourselves for now.

That's strange, I was checking HitVectors and the search does wrap on my iPhone. I think if Leo could centre it for small devices that would be a good fix. Same with the top menu. Or can we do a css fix?
Title: Re: Releasing my First Symbiostock Child Theme
Post by: Amanda_K on May 03, 2013, 12:24
@Chico, I think I found the whitespace issue!  It looks like the slider you've used isn't adjusting height responsively, the height is set at 300px and stays that way on all screens.

The issue with the search on the base theme is that is too wide (at least for a phone screen) when the drop down is included and has a default property that prevents it from wrapping (this is actually in the Boostrap css,)  What I did here was use some of the built in media queries to make it wrap nicely on a small screen like the phone, but I may have to adjust for people removing that part.

I know Leo is looking forward to other people contributing where we can and making it more of a community effort, that's the great part about open source!  If I find an even better way to handle the search on all screens I'll contribute it for use in the base theme and if you have any ideas when you start messing with it please feel free to jump in!  The more the merrier :)

In fact, i'm not worried about small devices for now. And probably much of this bad behavior it's my fault, since i'm a 100% wordpress rookie. Below, a brief explanation about how i swap original menu by two small banners.

They are in the widget section, make sure you have the category set for symbiostock featured images first.

Look in the technical support section fot a thread titled something like

Here is the thread Tinny was talking about:

http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock-technical-support/how-to-setup-%27newest%27-and-%27featured%27-images-on-the-home-page/ (http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock-technical-support/how-to-setup-%27newest%27-and-%27featured%27-images-on-the-home-page/)

Are you using the latest version 1.3.3 of the parent theme?

When you go to Appearance > Widgets, under available widgets you see Symbiostock -Latest Images and Symbiostock - Featured Images. You must use the template Home Page CTAs for the template for your home page in order to use these widgets. Then you click and drag them over to the Home Page Below Content area. (that's where most people are putting them).

It's me again.

Not a Clean Theme issue, but maybe is linked in someway.

I'm using a FOOBAR, kind of newsbar with lots of nice resources. One of then is integration with social media. So, i setup a facebook and put icon with URL in my default foobar (you can create many as you want).

Url is "www.facebook.com/hitvectors", but when you click it, you are sent to "hitvectors.com/facebook.com/hitvectors" and an error page from my site is showed.

I ripped my hair off trying to understand why "hitvectors.com" is placed before "www.facebook.com/hitvectors" since it was not present in any part of Foobar configuration. I sent a mail to developer, but no answers until now. If someone have some clue, please let me know. Below a image. Thanks.

You might want to check if you put the "http://" before the link where you enter it in Foobar?  Usually that issue happens when it's missing the http.   Let me know if that works!

I just bought and downloaded Amada's clean theme and it looks really good. I do have a question, though: how do you get the "Image Categories" menu to have a drop-down ( or to drop down)?  I'm so stumped, hope someone around here can help. Thanks in advance.

Hi there!  This is a built in WordPress function that you can create in your admin panel under Appearance -> Menus.  It's actually easiest to show you so give me about 10 minutes and I'll post a quick video or some screen shots.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply, Amanda! I'll give it a try. Now while you're here, another question, do I have make a another category to show "All Images"? Is that how we do it or is there another way?
Title: Re: Releasing my First Symbiostock Child Theme

Hmmm, I have seen a few people who have added a new category called "All Images" and added everything (which you can do with bulk editing) but I'm not sure I'd recommend it as it may cause performance or memory issues depending on how many images we are talking about.  However I could be totally wrong :D  I'll look into it though!

Hi Amanda

I use All Images as a check for me to make sure I have the same number of images categorised as I do listed, added this category when I first started and has been useful, might get too unwieldy at some point but still works at the moment.

Did you get chance to look at the css I sent you?
Title: Re: Releasing my First Symbiostock Child Theme
Post by: plrang on May 23, 2013, 05:35
I used to add just the IMAGE keyword after the URL and it
shows me the ALL IMAGES.

It has been working in 1.3.7 and is working in 2.0.

Just check it out, straight from the box http://stock.imagerion.com/image/ (http://stock.imagerion.com/image/)

After you click any image you can see it's not in any ALL IMAGES category

I lost all my custom css in clean theme editor window. I might suggest you copy and save that somewhere before updating, just in case.

edit: just to be clear, all the changes I made in the Edit CSS window, to the Clean Theme CSS, disappeared.

Yes, do, for sure. I can confirm that loading 2.2.7 does indeed delete css from edit css window...somehow my footer got messed up when I was working on my latest images/featured images area, so I reloaded 2.2.7 and the Clean Theme to straighten that out (it did) and the css was MIA again.  :(

Well.. I use the Child Theme since the beginning, have a lot of customizations and more than just css - nothing happens after updates.
I click update  then activate child theme back and everything works ok, all files stay in the child folder untouched.

Post by: Amanda_K on May 27, 2013, 15:12
plrang, I think you are talking about the default child theme, you are correct that would not be affected.  This thread is referring to a custom child theme called Clean Theme.

If you have Jetpack installed on your site you can customize a theme or child theme by adding CSS, I've done a tutorial here: http://www.creativembers.com/customizing-a-symbiostock-child-theme/ (http://www.creativembers.com/customizing-a-symbiostock-child-theme/) but as noted, you should always save a back up of your CSS edits.  These can just be pasted into a text file locally, but as with the main site the number one rule when dealing with web stuff is back up everything you can.

I haven't installed the newest version yet but I plan to upgrade the Clean Theme test site to 2.2.8 tomorrow and get to work on a few improvements.  I put the development on hold until we are out of Beta since things were changing so quickly.

Cathy, sorry for your trouble with the custom stuff getting deleted.  I checked you site just now and it looks good, I guess you got it all put back?  I'm curious as to what you are changing since I am considering adding a color picker to the admin panel. Can you send me a quick note when you get a chance and let me know?

Oh ok, sorry, I understand, I removed that Jetpack anyway for speed and to be independent by using the child theme. Just for information

Hello Amanda, I just upgraded to your Clean Theme 2.0, looks good! Just one thing I cant figure out... even if I am logged in I cant access the dashboard anymore. I cant logout either?
Title: Re: Releasing my First Symbiostock Child Theme
Post by: Amanda_K on July 11, 2013, 12:30
Hi Tina,

Clean theme hides the admin bar so that customers don't see the Wordpress elements of your site when they are logged in.  I can help you take this function out if you'd rather have the admin bar/dashboard link showing.

Can you tell me what happens when you log out?  I'm not having that issue on the demo site so I'm not sure what could be causing that for you.  I have emailed you version 1.0 to test per your request.
Title: Re: Releasing my First Symbiostock Child Theme
Post by: Amanda_K on July 11, 2013, 12:40
Update: Looking into Tina's issue I can see there may be a bug with one of the newer files and the log-in/log out function.  If you are 1.0 you can stay there for now while I update one more file and re-send 2.0.  Sorry for any inconvenience!

Thanks for fast answer Amanda, yes I would like to keep the admin-bar if possible. I made you as administrator in my site. Perhaps my site is good for doing some testing too, I dont know.. I am totally newbie

Tina, I sent you a fix via email (2.0.1) that I am 99% sure clears up the issue.  I have two others testing now, once they give me the all clear I'll be sending it out to everyone else.  Thank you!

Edit: you are all set as far as I can see, I logged in and made the change for you so your admin bar should show up!  I'll add a tutorial on that in case anyone else would like to change it.

Did you go to Appearance>Themes in your dashboard on the left and activate Child Theme 2.0, which will automatically deactivate the SY theme? It looks like, from your link above, that you have the Twenty Thirteen theme activated. Your theme page should look like this:

The Clean Theme was activated earlier - you can tell the difference as Amanda's theme has a narrow footer and everything is neatly contained with a grey background.  With the basic child theme you have a wide footer (if anyone has found a way of making this match the rest of the page I would be delighted to hear from you) and you do not get the grey background around the edges.

Yes Cathy, I did exactly this....Now you see the Thirteen becuase I updated Symbiostock from 2.5.5 to 2.5.6 and I got again white screen and couldn't access my Dashboard. So I was forced to remove Symbiostock from File Manager in order to be able to access the Dashboard again. Now I'm waiting for Leo to fix it again, I hope I will not get this white screen every time I make an update, is annoying....

I use use the basic child theme and I simply set the border to 0.

Code: [Select]
footer .footer_info {
background-image: none;
background-color: #fff;
text-align: center;
border: 0
}

CleanTheme (or any other child theme) will change the styling of your site, such as fonts, colors some spacing and it may occasionally move a few elements around on the page.

It will not create new content or install any plugins so you are still free to build your home page to look any way you want.  If you want a home page with a slider you will need to make sure you are creating and setting a static home page (probably using the Home Page CTA template)  in WordPress instead of defaulting to the blog page.

There are many threads on setting up your home page and which plugins and widgets people are using.  I hope to have time to do a full tutorial on this soon at Symbioguides.  In the meantime, here is a thread where Chico shared a marked up screen shot of the home page structure:
http://www.microstockgroup.com/19164/19164/msg316106/#msg316106 (http://www.microstockgroup.com/19164/19164/msg316106/#msg316106)

If you read through that post and the others in that thread is should give you a good starting point.

I assume it is the same as non Clean Theme

http://www.symbioguides.com/getting-started/initial-setup-menus/ (http://www.symbioguides.com/getting-started/initial-setup-menus/)

then use the

Image Categories in the Appearance, Menus section

If Image Categories is not showing click on Screen Options at the top right of the page to get a drop down to enable different items to show - this is the same for nearly all wordpress pages.

Scuse me, I think I didn't expressed myself well. I want some kind of multilevel drop-down menu. With normal method it shows only the first level subcategory in the menu. If I have sub sub categories they are not visible...

By Indenting in the menues.

I have remembered now - it was on the complete category page that I could not get the sub-sub categories to show - just drag and drop to indent such as

All categories
>> Animals
>>>>Dogs
>>>>>>Afghan
>>>>>>Basenji
>>>>>>Dobermann
>>Backgrounds
>>Landscape
>>Food
>>>>ready made
>>>>drinks

And you indented the third level even more from the second? And you refreshed your cache?  :)  If you have them indented correctly, i would leave them, go work on something else, then come back. They might be ok. Sometimes things act weird like that.  :)

I suppose that, in order to display  ore sub-menus (third and four), I must add something to the Theme css. But I don't know how to write css. And than, do I have to modify only the css? Or other file too?

I never figured why the down arrows wouldn't always show, so I added them to the menu item labels as needed:

Code: [Select]
<i class="icon-chevron-down">

I am ready to do this, but can you elaborate more? Exactly where should I put that code? I put it into every blank in the below screenshot and it doesn't seem to work. Looks like html, but I am not sure where it should go.

But I don't think you have to put something there. The third and four level sub-categories are already indented under the Header Menu in Appearance->Menus But on the site are not visible the third levels in the drop down menu. If you look in my site at Fruit, you'll be able to see that has the Subcategory Tropical Fruit which has other subcategories, but you cannot see them.
The work it must be done is to add third and four level sub-categories at the main navigation bar in the css of the Clean Theme. Once modified the css, the subcategories will appear.  :)

Just caught up with this.

I tried adding <i class="icon-chevron-down"> as you showed to one of my menu items that's missing the down arrow and got an amazing "flock of birds in flight" effect all over my home page - lots of arrows, but none anywhere near any menu items!

I removed it - and the display returned to normal. Perhaps with CleanTheme 2.0 as my child theme this isn't an option?

It's still so odd that some sub menus are handled correctly and others not - IOW it should just work...

Whoops, I just realised I hadn't put the closing tag in my code snippet!

It should be:

Code: [Select]
<i class="icon-chevron-down"> </i>
which would explain that effect. Sorry about that!

As you say, it should work, and I have a test installation with the menus built the same way which has all the down-arrows in place. I've been right through the code, which is partly WP core and partly Leo's, and can't see where it goes erratic.

Just to emphasise, that's a space between the tags, and it gets the chevron as a background.

Thanks - that works much better :)

I noted that if I use the code on all menu items with sub menus, I get double on those that got an automatic one. So I guess I will know when the bug gets fixed when I get double chevrons on the menus that now have one :)

Worked great, thanks much!
