Title: Symbiostock FAQ's, hints, tips, information etc
Post by: Kerioak~Christine on April 02, 2013, 08:20
If wanted I will start putting together a FAQ page and post it here, adding to it as others come up with hints, tips, information etc.

WATERMARKS

Decide on your watermark and put it in place before you upload your first image.  Images are marked as you process them, once processed you have to re-upload images to change the watermark on them

Your watermark should be a transparent .png file 522 x 522 pixels.  If you do not wish to create your own the images will still be watermarked with the default interlinking SS watermark

ftp it to: http://stockimages.kerioak.com/wp-content/themes/symbiostock/inc/classes/image-processor/ (http://stockimages.kerioak.com/wp-content/themes/symbiostock/inc/classes/image-processor/)

Then go to your back-end Symbiostock page, Settings, and in the third option box down where it says underneath

"Transparent PNG image (522 x 522px). If not supplied, default watermark (Symbiostock S) will be used."

change the default watermark name to the name of your watermark

"symbiostock-watermark.png"  to "....yourwatermarksname-deletedots....png"
Save

WORDPRESS LOGIN NAME - NAME ON IMAGES

When you get to the stage of customers viewing your thumbnails if they click on the magnifying glass your name will come up on the image.  It is strongly recommended that you add a name other than your admin identity.

To do this go to "Users" "My Profile" then scroll down to

Username     ... possibly admin or whatever you chose when you created Wordpress ....   Usernames cannot be changed.
First Name
Last Name
Nickname (required)      ....  add the name you wish to appear with your images here ..........
Display name publicly as   ....  select it in the dropdown box ..

Save

This would be awesome! Fixes and important info are being posted fast and furiously, but stuff is getting scattered. I was thinking separate threads but this is even better. Thanks for putting in the time! I know i will appreciate it! I am a beginner with the wordpress stuff and i am struggling.

If you want add horizontal menu itens, go to "pages" and create a new page. Image below shows creation of item named "about" in my SS site. It's simple, but i spend hours to learn how to do it.

as we add more faq, et al, a forum thread will get unwieldy, so I've started a more traditional FAQ page at  http://cascoly-images.com/pix/faq-frequently-asked-questions-about-symbiostock/ (http://cascoly-images.com/pix/faq-frequently-asked-questions-about-symbiostock/)  and have grafted comments from here

Awesome you might want to add this:

If your network results show a trailing series of errors (and actually nothing below that) its because your network buddy has to update his permalink settings to "post"...instead of the default. http://codex.wordpress.org/Settings_Permalinks_Screen (http://codex.wordpress.org/Settings_Permalinks_Screen)

- in some cases they may have messed around with something else, but its unlikely.

Just remove them from your network until they update their permalink settings.

(somewhere you might want to add to new installers - updating permalinks to "post" is extremely necessary with this theme.)

Here is  a BIG tip.  I can't believe I've forgotten to mention it.

When your doing your child themes or even posts, styling your personal site, its CRUCIAL that you remember your biggest ace - the frameworks Symbiostock is built on.

The cute little icons - the snazzy hero areas, those beautiful wells some of the content is sunk into - a lot of the responsiveness - those little cart icons -

bootstrap:
http://twitter.github.com/bootstrap/

font-awesome
http://fortawesome.github.com/Font-Awesome/

For instance - how to use a light-bulb icon -
Code: [Select]
<i class="icon-lightbulb"></i>
The bootstrap site shows tons of CSS shortcuts. Its made so you can style right on top of it.

Quick example

CHANGING AND ADDING TEXT INTO THE THREE FOOTER BOXES.

Go to Appearance > Widgets. On the right you will see Footer Left, Footer Middle and Footer Right. Click the little triangle on the right of each section to open it. Then look in the left hand section for the Text widget. Drag over that widget into each section. There you can add text for your footers. NOTE: You have to have a title. Nothing shows up if you don't.  There is a text widget for adding text and html.

There is an enhanced widget for adding html, css, etc. available here for you to download and install.
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/enhanced-text-widget/ (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/enhanced-text-widget/)

Both widgets and plug-ins get installed into the plug-ins folder.

I haven't figured out how to change the Wordpress/Leo Blanchette footer yet.

Thanks to klsbear for sharing this with me!

Appearance: Widgets. Look for the sidebar and drag the Tag Cloud widget into the sidebar. You can then select keywords/tags or categories.

I wonder if the issue is that you really don't have a home page to speak of. Can you add a bunch of text to that home page to see if that makes a difference.

INCREASING MEMORY SO YOU CAN UPLOAD LARGE PHOTOS

These are numbers I pulled from two different threads and were suggested.

Create a file with notepad (PC) or TextEdit (mac) and name it php.ini     VERY IMPORTANT: make sure another extension isnt added on. For instance, TextEdit by default puts .rtf on it. You have to get rid of that and use the .ini

Paste this code in:

Quote

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; Resource Limits ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

memory_limit = 32M
max_execution_time = 30     ; Maximum execution time of each script, in seconds
max_input_time = 60   ; Maximum amount of time each script may spend parsing request data
memory_limit = 64M      ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (16MB)
upload_max_filesize = 30M
post_max_size = 10M

Save and upload to your server. This will be different for everyone. For instance, my host top level is /. Then I have three domain folders in there. One of those three is my stock photo website. I did not put the .ini file in there, I put it in the very top level of /. For some people, it will be public_html (I think Bluehost uses that nomenclature).

edited 4-4-13: I could not get my upload file size increased. I created the php.ini file and tried root and in my site folder. I read something online that said put it in wp-admin, tried that. Nothing. Called my host, they created the file for me and it turns out mine goes in the cgi-bin folder of my site folder. root>cathyslifestockphotos.com>cgi-bin>php.ini

It may or may not be relevant, but I've posted a correction at http://photo.travelling-light.net/hints-on-symbiostock-site-customising/ (http://photo.travelling-light.net/hints-on-symbiostock-site-customising/) about using the Default Template rather than Home Page if you want a sidebar for widgets.

Just had a quick look at your site, Chico, and I see you've got the tag cloud up on your Contact page, so that's working.

It's all a wonderful learning experience...

Don't give up, yet: I played around with menus and pages yesterday. Everything worked great for a while. But then I found myself stuck with a similar problem. Widgets (tag cloud) wouldn't show and commenting was enabled (although it was turned off in settings). Changing page templates didn't solve the issue. Updating to version 1.19 didn't help either. Renaming the page finally did! It seemed to be some naming conflict. It is strange, though, because the page title didn't match anything but the tagline for my site.

Tip from Travelling-Light fix my tag cloud issue. The problem key is DEFAULT TEMPLATE.

DO NOT think you can move all php files from symbiostock to symbiostock-child just because one or two might work.  It totally wrecks your site and the whole thing disappears into a white space.

Luckily my host does backups (daily, weekly, monthly) and I used that to retrieve it, not for the first time !

Maybe just i didn't know it, but accidentally i discovered how to create drop down menus.

Just drag some menu item below "menu head" (i don't know how to name it). Please see image to better understand. It's easy.

Cool isn't it? You can also create unique links (like your specific category pages) and make sub menus for those as well.

I am still having this issue on the home page. I have the slider on the left but a big white space on the right. I wanted to put copy there, instead of under the slider, which might end up "below the fold". It shows up on my About and Contact Page and I don't want the side bar there, only on the Home page.

I'm sure there's a simple solution to this, but I'm having trouble with my vertical thumbnails.  As you can see, they are much bigger than the horizontal ones.

I am not familiar with wordpress, but where you took from that weird portfolio link? It looks like not for symbiostock code, but wordpress somehow displays your images, and that's the result.
To display portfolio I created category named "All" (you may name it in menu "portfolio") and all other categories are its chidren. Then, when you add categories to images, they also go to all.
Have a look at my site:

My guess is that you have set a width size and somewhere need to find a height size when you are adding pictures to your portfolio.  Alternatively if you want to show all your images add an "All images" or something to your categories and see if you can add that to a separate link - I think it would be possible from within the menu area.

Just a thought - your watermark, do you want people to be able to find you from it if it is used elsewhere by adding your web address as well or just leave it with your name as there are a few Danny Hook's if you do web searches

I've kind of gone back and forth on the watermark thing.  I have, in the past, included my web address, but I don't want the watermark to distract from the image itself.  I see what you're saying, though.  Might need to work on that today.  Thanks.

This you mean?

What is the Symbiostock Network?

Symbiostock is not a stock agency, we are a group of independent photographers, illustrators and artists  licensing royalty-free and rights managed images from our own sites and to make it easier for you, our customers to find the right image we are also linked to each other.  This means if you do a search  for example, “tree” you will get a page where firstly my tree images appear and then those of my network members.    If you use Categories to start your search you will only find  the images on my site.  The network members I am linked to may link back to me or may link to other members so you can click on one of their images and do another search to bring up different results.  Of course, my ambition is to have the pictures you desire here but if I do not I can offer an alternative where you can purchase direct from the artist.

Yes of course you can use it - if anyone can improve upon it (not difficult) then please post your version :)

We need to make it sound as if it is best to get it direct from the artist I think?

You may think this is nitpicking, but I modified the sentence structure a little bit and this is how I put it in my About page. I have a section on the home page that simply says that my site is a member of the Symbiostock network and links to the about page so that people see it up front but I don't clutter the landing page, and they get the details separately.

Feel free to use this approach or modify as you see fit to align with your own sites:

 Home Page:  Backyard Stock Photos is a member of the Symbiostock Network. For more details please see “About Backyard Stock Photos” above

About Page: Backyard Stock Photos is a member of the Symbiostock Network. Symbiostock is not a stock agency, we are a group of independent photographers, illustrators and artists licensing royalty-free and rights managed images from our own sites. Nice! I would like to use that copy for my site, too. I wish I could get a sidebar to appear on the home page. I'm wondering if my slider to too large and is disturbing the sidebar div? I might make that slide a little smaller and see what happens.

Which template are you using for your home page? The 'Home Page' template doesn't have a sidebar, but 'Home Page - Sidebar' does. Alternatively 'Default Template' has a sidebar and also shows the page title.

With a sidebar I find 770px is the right width for a slideshow.

ETA: I've ripped off your design for the slideshow images... ;)

I am using the Default, but let me try Home Page-Sidebar. I saw that when I loaded the last version, but there's so many things to work on, I get easily distracted and go off on another tangent! Thanks for the tip on the size...my slider is 745, so it can't be too wide, then. I'll try changing the template first.

No problem on the ripping off. Also, another tip in another thread, right click disable plug-in, tho I know if someone wants it, they will find a way.  :(   no-right-click-images plugin is the name.

edit...I just checked. I KNOW I saw the template home with sidebar, but now it is not in my list. What happened to it? Think I will deactivate, upload the latest parent theme again, and activate. And pray.

edit again...operator error. I just chose the wrong parent to install. DOH!

I also plan to use above text in my site.

Tinny: am I (we) allowed to use your privacy policy info too?

Hey guys, today I'm actually finding it much easier to focus on things outside of Symbiostock projects. I'm really happy to see people helping eachother too.

Its really up to the little growing team of independents to decide which way things go - but since you guys are making helpful little write-ups and articles, I could set you up as authors on the main site. You can have an "author box" which credits your site for things like that that you write.

The site itself is still quite new and almost completely without a unique design, but social features are completely operable on it. You may enjoy it.

The more the community self-builds (which is the most intelligent approach) the more I can focus on development in the future. Over and out.

To make it easier for you, our customer, to find the right image we are also linked to each other.  This means if you do a search for  “tree” you will get a page where firstly my tree images appear and then those of my network members.

Steve

This is great, U sed it on my site too.

Yes you (anyone) may use it - maybe a link to my stock site as well - even if it is hidden in a full stop or something :)

- I have not checked for the legality of it but is one I use on our Janchristie.com site as well (anyone into nail art?)

I've been updating the faq at http://cascoly-images.com/pix/faq-frequently-asked-questions-about-symbiostock/ (http://cascoly-images.com/pix/faq-frequently-asked-questions-about-symbiostock/)   writing and editing from responses here - but if you write your FAQ as a post in wp, I can link to your site directly rather than re-writing -- just email me the link

I like the concept of Symbiostock, but not its abbreviation - SS.
Not only is this acronym synonymous with Shuttterstock, but also with SchutzStaffel, the elite military unit if Hitler's Nazi army.

I would imagine with all the creative potential on this site we should be able to come up with a different short form. Some acronyms might be SB, SBS, SYS, SYM. We could even vote on it.
