If wanted I will start putting together a FAQ page and post it here, adding to it as others come up with hints, tips, information etc.

WATERMARKS

Decide on your watermark and put it in place before you upload your first image.  Images are marked as you process them, once processed you have to re-upload images to change the watermark on them

Your watermark should be a transparent .png file 522 x 522 pixels.  If you do not wish to create your own the images will still be watermarked with the default interlinking SS watermark

ftp it to: http://stockimages.kerioak.com/wp-content/themes/symbiostock/inc/classes/image-processor/

Then go to your back-end Symbiostock page, Settings, and in the third option box down where it says underneath

"Transparent PNG image (522 x 522px). If not supplied, default watermark (Symbiostock S) will be used."

change the default watermark name to the name of your watermark

"symbiostock-watermark.png"  to "....yourwatermarksname-deletedots....png"
Save

WORDPRESS LOGIN NAME - NAME ON IMAGES

When you get to the stage of customers viewing your thumbnails if they click on the magnifying glass your name will come up on the image.  It is strongly recommended that you add a name other than your admin identity.

To do this go to "Users" "My Profile" then scroll down to

Username     ... possibly admin or whatever you chose when you created Wordpress ....   Usernames cannot be changed.
First Name
Last Name
Nickname (required)      ....  add the name you wish to appear with your images here ..........
Display name publicly as   ....  select it in the dropdown box ..

Save

This would be awesome! Fixes and important info are being posted fast and furiously, but stuff is getting scattered. I was thinking separate threads but this is even better. Thanks for putting in the time! I know i will appreciate it! I am a beginner with the wordpress stuff and i am struggling.

If you want add horizontal menu itens, go to "pages" and create a new page. Image below shows creation of item named "about" in my SS site. It's simple, but i spend hours to learn how to do it.

as we add more faq, et al, a forum thread will get unwieldy, so I've started a more traditional FAQ page at  http://cascoly-images.com/pix/faq-frequently-asked-questions-about-symbiostock/  and have grafted comments from here

I do appreciate that. Until I'm caught up on everything this sort of thing will really help.

Awesome you might want to add this:

If your network results show a trailing series of errors (and actually nothing below that) its because your network buddy has to update his permalink settings to "post"...instead of the default. http://codex.wordpress.org/Settings_Permalinks_Screen

- in some cases they may have messed around with something else, but its unlikely.

Just remove them from your network until they update their permalink settings.

(somewhere you might want to add to new installers - updating permalinks to "post" is extremely necessary with this theme.)

Here is  a BIG tip.  I can't believe I've forgotten to mention it.

When your doing your child themes or even posts, styling your personal site, its CRUCIAL that you remember your biggest ace - the frameworks Symbiostock is built on.

The cute little icons - the snazzy hero areas, those beautiful wells some of the content is sunk into - a lot of the responsiveness - those little cart icons -

bootstrap:
http://twitter.github.com/bootstrap/

font-awesome
http://fortawesome.github.com/Font-Awesome/

For instance - how to use a light-bulb icon -
Code: [Select]
<i class="icon-lightbulb"></i>
The bootstrap site shows tons of CSS shortcuts. Its made so you can style right on top of it.

Quick example

CHANGING AND ADDING TEXT INTO THE THREE FOOTER BOXES.

Go to Appearance > Widgets. On the right you will see Footer Left, Footer Middle and Footer Right. Click the little triangle on the right of each section to open it. Then look in the left hand section for the Text widget. Drag over that widget into each section. There you can add text for your footers. NOTE: You have to have a title. Nothing shows up if you don't.  There is a text widget for adding text and html.

There is an enhanced widget for adding html, css, etc. available here for you to download and install.
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/enhanced-text-widget/

Both widgets and plug-ins get installed into the plug-ins folder.

I haven't figured out how to change the Wordpress/Leo Blanchette footer yet.

Thanks to klsbear for sharing this with me!

Some tip to activate tag cloud?

Appearance: Widgets. Look for the sidebar and drag the Tag Cloud widget into the sidebar. You can then select keywords/tags or categories.

I wonder if the issue is that you really don't have a home page to speak of. Can you add a bunch of text to that home page to see if that makes a difference.

INCREASING MEMORY SO YOU CAN UPLOAD LARGE PHOTOS

These are numbers I pulled from two different threads and were suggested.

Create a file with notepad (PC) or TextEdit (mac) and name it php.ini     VERY IMPORTANT: make sure another extension isnt added on. For instance, TextEdit by default puts .rtf on it. You have to get rid of that and use the .ini

Paste this code in:

Quote

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; Resource Limits ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

memory_limit = 32M
max_execution_time = 30     ; Maximum execution time of each script, in seconds
max_input_time = 60   ; Maximum amount of time each script may spend parsing request data
memory_limit = 64M      ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (16MB)
upload_max_filesize = 30M
post_max_size = 10M

Save and upload to your server. This will be different for everyone. For instance, my host top level is /. Then I have three domain folders in there. One of those three is my stock photo website. I did not put the .ini file in there, I put it in the very top level of /. For some people, it will be public_html (I think Bluehost uses that nomenclature).

edited 4-4-13: I could not get my upload file size increased. I created the php.ini file and tried root and in my site folder. I read something online that said put it in wp-admin, tried that. Nothing. Called my host, they created the file for me and it turns out mine goes in the cgi-bin folder of my site folder. root>cathyslifestockphotos.com>cgi-bin>php.ini

It may or may not be relevant, but I've posted a correction at http://photo.travelling-light.net/hints-on-symbiostock-site-customising/ about using the Default Template rather than Home Page if you want a sidebar for widgets.

Just had a quick look at your site, Chico, and I see you've got the tag cloud up on your Contact page, so that's working.

It's all a wonderful learning experience...

Don't give up, yet: I played around with menus and pages yesterday. Everything worked great for a while. But then I found myself stuck with a similar problem. Widgets (tag cloud) wouldn't show and commenting was enabled (although it was turned off in settings). Changing page templates didn't solve the issue. Updating to version 1.19 didn't help either. Renaming the page finally did! It seemed to be some naming conflict. It is strange, though, because the page title didn't match anything but the tagline for my site.

Tip from Travelling-Light fix my tag cloud issue. The problem key is DEFAULT TEMPLATE.

DO NOT think you can move all php files from symbiostock to symbiostock-child just because one or two might work.  It totally wrecks your site and the whole thing disappears into a white space.

Luckily my host does backups (daily, weekly, monthly) and I used that to retrieve it, not for the first time !

Maybe just i didn't know it, but accidentally i discovered how to create drop down menus.

Just drag some menu item below "menu head" (i don't know how to name it). Please see image to better understand. It's easy.

Cool isn't it? You can also create unique links (like your specific category pages) and make sub menus for those as well.

I am still having this issue on the home page. I have the slider on the left but a big white space on the right. I wanted to put copy there, instead of under the slider, which might end up "below the fold". It shows up on my About and Contact Page and I don't want the side bar there, only on the Home page.

I'm sure there's a simple solution to this, but I'm having trouble with my vertical thumbnails.  As you can see, they are much bigger than the horizontal ones.
