Post by: Spectral-Design.net on September 06, 2013, 09:03
Hi all,

Just curious :-) What form of hosting do you use for your symbio site? (Recommendations welcome)

I think that you will find most Symbiostockers are using shared hosting (especially this early in the game).

Yes, I guess you may be right. Personally I am on a VPS. It will be interesting too in order to give better advices to people when it comes to problem solving/backing up/bugfixing etc.

I am on shared hosting but wish there was a better alternative. Dedicated is way out of my budget, until big sales come along. Right now i share with 14 other sites (and that could likely increase). I wish there was a little more choice...like pay another $5 a month but the max shares would be 5, or something like that.

Cathy, may I ask how much you pay atm? You don`t have to get a whole dedicated, you can go with a VPS. They are available from 10$ on and give you much more freedom....

Bluehost, about $90 a year. I will check out vps this weekend. So you are happy with the speed of your site and all, with the vps?

It is like with everything: speed and reliability of any hosting product depends on the company who is offering the package. There are lots of forums on the net one should visit before contracting anything with a hoster. Furthermore: I would not recommend paying lots of time in advance for your package. Just give it a try and wait until everything settled well.

A VPS is a good intermediate between a shared and a dedicated. Usually they are a lot faster and more powerful than a shared...I will never ever go back to a shared. In many VPS products you have a minimum of guaranteed RAM and CPU. Plus, you learn a lot about the administration before maybe getting a real dedicated.
My personal solution could be a bit faster and better - but well, I had to save some money :-)

Also: I read a lot about people spending money for wordpress backup solutions...I wonder if this is a better solution and I am missing something or if they are aware that backends like cPanel offer a free and complete backup module in most cases...

I am curious if anybody is using cloud platforms like Google App Engine, Amazon S3 or Heroku?

I am using Amazon S3 for my backup solutions. Cheap, fast and secure.
(I would not recommend any of those without a proper CNAME implementation for outsourced image hosting though  (like CMSAccount offers) since the Google Bot would not associate the images with your domain = loss of traffic.)

A lot of the backup threads were due, I think, to my problems with lack of backup from host - they do not do complete backup in cPanel
