I am really looking forward to this being released and trying it out once Leo is happy with it.  Is it worth uploading images to webspace in anticipation  or will they need to be uploaded though the programme itself?

Well, I can't tell you how happy I am to see continued interest and threads popping up now and then.

Depending on what your host gives you for folder management (or what you can do through FTP) you can upload to a folder that you create. Then, when Symbiostock is installed you can transfer all those files over.

FYI - Important - Symbiostock follows typical naming rules (my-file.eps, my-file.jpg) but with a few extras:

myfile.eps
myfile.zip
myfile.jpg
myfile.png

= one file set which will be considered one royalty free product. All of them are renamed to the product id like...

8564.eps
8564.zip
8564.jpg
8564.png

PNG generates a transparency preview btw.

Zip can contain any sort of files you want, opening the door for other product types to be sold under your RF product. So for instance you may wish to sell a 3d model as a supporting option, the same as you sell an eps. Since you can set unique prices on each product it works out great.

where do images need to be stored?  for my smugmug site, i've been creating wp posts that link to various galleries, eg http://www.buydigpix.com/wp/?p=169

these show thumbnails, with captions, and then link the user to smugmug to purchase individual images.  thru your system i expect to add collections that can be bought directly, but will i need to move the individual images also?

how does the search across sites work?  where does it get the data?

If you are pre-uploading to save yourself the huge amount of time it takes to upload 4000 images...then you can just make a folder on your site to hold them. You probably have them named as usual...myfile.jpg, myfile.eps...

...and when you upload the theme just transfer those files over to the uploads folder of Symbiostock. It will show up as files que'd for upload.

I've set the ability to make sets (categories) for your images. So if you have like 50 images of fish jumping out of bowls into tv screens you can add them to a category you make like "Jumping fish" and customers can navigate through them. Its still extremely basic though. I haven't put in category preview pics yet. Just text with "total number".

Purchasing collections as a whole is something I have yet to implement, and will probably be a plugin.

Search uses Wordpress. The "Image" entry is really a custom post type. I've set it up to take phrases and be pretty flexible. The data...from the database. "Keywords" are just a custom taxonomy for the custom post type "image", whereas "tags" are the taxonomy for "post" which you are probably familiar with.

I know this is off topic but where is the post where you keep us updated on the progress of Symbiostock.

I don't want to put any (further) pressure on you but I thought you were about to offer the theme for download soon.

Any concrete idea what we're looking at?

Sorry if I'm too pushy - just can't wait to see it.

Keep up the good work!

I was thinking of using the same method Blizzard entertainment does - constant teasers and updates...for about 10 years until actual release :D.

Well, and update thread might not be necessary at this point since I just have a few remaining details to cover. Literally within maybe a week.

Thanks Leo - for the answer and the work you are putting in - I do think maybe you could get "snowed under" with messages  if you tried to keep us hanging on for ten years  :)

Here you go:

http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock-technical-support/need-help-with-image-upload-and-process-images/msg311309/#msg311309

Some hosting has to have memory limits upped to handle the image crunching.

I'm going to be making some changes hopefully within a few days which will take care of that problem for the majority of cases.

Thanks for keeping these in one place and the people who contributed them. (if they are on Leo's site, I missed them, sorry)

The watermark and memory advise I've read here, but didn't understand without the detailed FAQ for each.

I just checked into your site. I found a new and interesting problem! I need to start handing out prizes to people who discover new problems.

May I ask again what is your hosting? That way I can research its quirks?

When something crashes without an error (a blank white screen) the first thing I do is go to your editing screen and add:

Code: [Select]
error_reporting(E_ALL);
ini_set('display_errors', '1');

to the functions file underneath opening comments. Did that, and then went to save it...

"Um...where's the save button..."

So I refresh the page ... "Still no save button...whats going on here?"

Then I found this little line where the save button should have been:

You need to make this file writable before you can save your changes. See the Codex for more information.
---- > http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions

So the problem of me not being able to save your functions file, as well as your incomplete processing - might be the same - the folders for some reason are not write-able.

Just an FYI, I pretty much always suggest using BLUEHOST (see my signature) for Symbiostock sites because it will give you less (or no) problems. Its not because I'm biased :D. If you have something that might qualify as (to pick a commonly used term) "cheap hosting" you end up paying for it in other ways, like for instance pulling out your hair, and the inevitable need to upscale anyway.

And to anyone else (cidepix!) who insists that hosting like godaddy should be plenty sufficient and we just need to improve the system - in the next few days till early next week I'll be rewriting the image processing  functions to be FAR better and use imagic, which will improve quality and stuff.

Hope this helps.

So my understanding from the message below is that I can upload a .jpg and a .png with the same filename and they get combined into one product.  Which is awesome!

But I've just uploaded my first image that way.

myfile.jpg
myfile.png

I search for the image and when I get to the image detail page all files are listed as png only.  No mention of jpeg file.  I must be doing something wrong?  Can anybody help me along?

Thanks!

Hey Tinny,

I haven't gotten as far as figuring out the ftp quite yet.  I uploaded a single image through the wordpress admin area and as you say all sizes show as only png @72dpi.  Not sure what to do at this point?  Not even sure what's supposed to happen?

Cool Cascoly.... I like the way you laid out the collection!  That'll be something to think about once I've got everything else sorted out.

I was hoping to offer both the jpegs and pngs at all sizes and let the customer decide but it's looking like the png becomes the dominant file. If that's the case I guess I'll just upload the jpeg with clipping paths.  I certainly don't want to upload both file types as separate products.

Not sure what is happening - some of my have png and jpg and others just png.  I tried reuploading one pair with nothing else and it still just has png showing.   Size does not seem to affect it  - if you work it out can you let me know please ?
