Title: Would you be interested in an iPhone/iPad app for browsing/searching SYS images
Post by: Chris Kelleher on August 27, 2013, 09:04
I was just wondering if there would be any interest in an iPhone/iPad app for browsing and searching images on the SymbioStock network?

I have iOS development experience, and might be willing to develop this if there is enough interest.

I voted yes until I realised its IOS only, so no. Sorry, discard my vote please.

Hmm, we're mostly suppliers and not buyers - so I don't know what you had in mind?

Is it going to be a paid app?

An iOS app would be certianly a nice start. Lots of designers use Apple gear so why not?

Absolutely! I think it's a great idea, especially when users can actually buy from their iPhone. I would offer it in a heartbeat to the visitors of my site.

It would be a free app for buyers to download and use, just like the ones that some of the Microstock sites have out there now.

Sounds like a great idea! Whatever makes it easier for buyers to buy.

I think an app would be a great way to increase the reach of the network and help get the word out about symbiostock!
I voted Yes.

I am interested in the idea, but I wish someone could do that for Android. And you can include the PayPal mobile library in there so that people can purchase images as well.

An App would be a great way of publicising the network but I can already search just using my (android) phone and tablet, I think I am missing something here ?    I did not vote as am not sure of the reason for needing an app other than advertising ?

A designated app is supposed to make browsing, viewing (and hopefully purchasing) easier and more comfortable than using the browser on your phone.

In addition to that, imagine people have this designated app (including icon) on the screen of their phone. It's like a constant reminder to use it regularly. Best advertisement ever.
Not to mention the publicity and the attention the app gets when it hits the Apple App Store. That should give a good boost not only in regards to sales but also to getting new contributors.

Wrong! You should vote YES regardless if you have an iPhone or not.  8)
Because you'll benefit from it no matter if you use it. Others will.

I am not part of Symbiostock therefore this is also a general question. Are many buyers really likely to download stock photos to their iPhone or iPad ? If this is an app which hardly anyone uses then it seems like a huge waste of time. Unless it is mostly a coding exercise - in which case there is definitely value.

Personally it annoys me a little when sites try to get me to download an app if they detect that I am using a mobile device. A site should be well enough coded to present a different version and resized images and content depending on what device and browser it detects that a user is visiting with. Like the Squarespace sites for example (which incidentally also offer a very mature sales platform for photographers).

Image downloads link to your e-mail as well. So in theory your could use this app to browse on your ipad or phone at your leasure and then when you get to your computer it would be ready to use. This seems like a pretty good idea to me.

Surely if the site is well coded then it will work whatever the platform and no need for a specialist app. Although, of course, you could still have an option to conveniently add it to your home screen as a web app - which would also therefore be effectively Android and iOS agnostic. Like how the FT does it.

A web page should not need a special app.
