Title: How should we backup our Symbiostock site?
Post by: Pilens on April 15, 2013, 00:05
One recent case (http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock-technical-support/why-does-a-backup-of-my-site-from-4-11-13-not-have-images (http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock-technical-support/why-does-a-backup-of-my-site-from-4-11-13-not-have-images)) of lost images that have been uploaded and were already processed made me thinking. There wasn't sufficient backup on the side of the host to restore the site and the images. It doesn't matter how it happened, we all know s..t happens. So what should the smart Symbiostock Webmaster  ;D do to be prepared when bad luck strikes?

I will backup my wp database in cpanel and ftp the db file and whole wp root to my computer just before I do major changes. If disaster strikes I'd ftp everything back and restore the dp from file. After that my site would run as before those major changes failed. Right?

Check your cpanel. Should have an option for full backup. It will give options for database, files, or both...if its anything like mine.

I hope that is so because i learned my lesson. I switched my site to blue host over the weekend because their cpanel is far superior to my previous hosts, i hope i can do a full backup.

Please post your results if you can. I'm also on Blue Host and I know very little about backups.

Justhost - which I believe is part of the Bluehost family does automatic backups daily, weekly and monthly and you can use these to do a total back up (as I did the other day when I REALLY managed to muck WP and Symbiostock up.  They also charge an annual fee if youwant to be able to retrieve certain files from your backups rather than everything.  If I wanted to back up to my computer/hard disk I imagine like most of you I would need a LOT of time and more hard drives.

Seems an earlier post from me got lost  :o

I was confirming that I found the backup function on my Bluehost cpanel. It creates daily/weekly/monthly backups automatically. You can download the full backup files and you have many options (too many to list) for downloading partial backup. Some of these option are only available after a $12.95/year upgrade. Is it worth the extra $s?

Restore is similar just reverse. Some options for partial restores need that paid upgrade.

Yeah, you are right once there are thousands of images online on my site I don't think I wanna download a full backup every time I do a change either.

only the images will require much space -- ftp backups of the rest of your site wouldn't take much.   for images, themselves, I already have multiple external drives, and keep one drive in a safe deposit box

backing up symbio site would just take at most another hard drive, and they;'re only about $100 for a terabyte or more now
