BTW I just got off the phone with Bluehost, some time in May they will be adding VPS and Dedicated server plans!  The rep told me pricing for VPS will start around $30 so I am for sure moving this back there.  Should be a fun opportunity to write a guide on moving a Symbisotock site haha.

I'm glad to hear that too. I am happy with bluehost and their support is awesome, but I do sit and frequently wait for the server. I would like to change to a dedicated IP as soon as they are up and running with that.

Site: http://stock.imagerion.com
Host: home.pl
Results: installs and works ok at the moment
Info: simple adjustments typical for home.pl users, although I see a need for  some tweaks in php.ini if one would try to process larger batches than 30.
Fore the moment I work more on the backend than I upload.

Changing php.ini max_execution_time to more than 30s does nothing, although it's visible in php_info :-/

So...another info for people from Poland :)
My first Symbio site was on nazwa.pl. There is only 30s max script execution time and 64M memory, and these values can't be overriden in php.ini file. It was enough for Symbiostock, when using ImageMagick and processing no more than 10 files in a batch, so if someone already has "active" server there, can try to install Symbiostock.
I had some more stuff, so I moved everything to linuxpl.com ("WPro" account on host pro-linuxpl.com).
Everything works, database and server are very fast. One file processing takes about 1s, so there is no problem with large batches  (max execution time is 600s).

Site: http://images.mddu.com
Host: byethost (free plan) http://byethost.com
Results: On the current free plan that I'm on large jpgs don't process at all.  Not sure about other features since image processing is my main concern at the moment
Info: I'll be staying with them and pay for a standard account next month to see if that fixes the processing problem.  If not, I'll go with someone else.

Bluehost is the way to go for Symbiostock :D

I only know inmotion from the dedicated server level, which has been quite amazing. But on the entry level I have no idea where things stand. But Bluehost  is by far the best match for an entry level Symbiostock site because of its price/power.

Not impressed at all with Bluehost. I've seen 3 outages on my site already, and honestly I don't check very often. Support is always quick to respond, but the server has been less than adequate. I'm thinking of trying ICDSoft next. I use them to host my Disney blog, which has a good amount of traffic, lots of images, and rarely has a problem.

Site: http://www.crackerclips.com
Host: godaddy
Results: Ongoing email problems with godaddy and symbiostock but biggest issue for me is that I can't get imagick to work.  The few images I've uploaded so far look dull, lifeless and unsaturated.  Been with godaddy for years and have always been happy but I'm considering moving the whole thing to Bluehost to make this work.  Reading through this thread tho it sounds like some people aren't very happy with Bluehost either.  So I'm kind of at a standstill for now.  Not sure what to do.

semmickphoto.com at bluehost. Zero issues. In fact, extremely happy with their whole package, including cpanel.

Only downside is that they knocked 2 dollar/month off for the summer discount which I missed by a week.  ;D

My site could be speedier at times, but at the small price tag it comes, I can't reasonably complain.

I hope, of course, that sales will justify upgrading to a dedicated server, soon  ;D

Yes, speed could be faster now you mention it.

Yes, that would be my only complaint of bluehost. And dedicated IP or server would fix that.

Most issues could be solved with upgrades and money. Actually the reason I suggested bluehost is the power/cost ratio. Plus you can update when the time is right. Ultimately the stakes / potential losses should remain low so someone new to a venture like does not invest too much. That way if your goals are not met, your out less money than what it would cost to fund a simple hobby.

Keep documenting stuff. As more people sign on, they will need this thread :D

Leo I understand why you suggest bluehost but it's hard for me to switch because I have been more than happy with godaddy.. in fact I worked with many hosting companies over the years and godaddy -for me- has been (BY FAR) the best experience.. almost no downtime in 2 years.. (except occasional issues)

All the previous companies made me so sick that I am in love with godaddy.. if this wasn't my experience I would have switched to bluehost already.. but even their homepage do not impress me enough..

I hope the godaddy issue is sorted and you start a referral campaign to godaddy.. I would follow that referral link happily even though I already have a godaddy account..

I have to echo cidepix's comments.  I've been with godaddy for years and been nothing but happy.  I've never had any significant downtime and my  sites have always been plenty fast as far as I'm concerned.  My customer service experiences have been really good as well.

I would also be happy to use a referral link to godaddy if the existing couple of issues were sorted out and a link was made available.

Don't worry you guys, I'm about to make some comments on Inmotion! I keep waking up to a database error every morning. Their VPS hosting is worse than bluehost $10 a month and its costing bigger people money, who are needing my site to test some SY functionality.

Frustrating to say the least. I guess I was impressed with them enough with their upscale hosting, and I assumed the same quality applied to all of their stuff.

Regarding godaddy -

You guys will get helped if I can get root access. You can make me a cpanel password I'm sure. I'd love to put two straight days into godaddy. I just can't do it very easily without the right access.

Just to re-itterate. Everyone would LOVE Symbiostock to pieces and never see any problems of any sort in most cases if they were on upscale hosting. But I ask people to start small so losses are small if things don't go well.

Leo let me know when you will be available and I will purchase a godaddy hosting account just for testing purposes and will install a testing site there..

It will be exactly the same type of account as the one I have on godaddy now.. I will then pass you the cpanel access details..

It's best to do it this way because it will give you total freedom to mess with it as you wish..

Only let me know when you are done with other issues and are able to dedicate time for this..

Tried all-inkl.com (which has been host of all my other websites for many years) but did not get it installed properly. Installing Wordpress was no problem at all but installing Symbiostock was not possible because all-inkl.com won't let any scripts create directories in the web root.

Switched to bluehost.com and didn't have problems.

Site: http://stockphotology.com
Host: www.justhost.com
Results: A mixed bag - seems to be working now.
Info: Justhost Customer Support is not all that. Ended up sorting things out myself after setting up a new subdomain and redirecting nameservers from another domain name registrar with a bit of Googling and reading fora. This was after Justhost told me it couldn't be done. Also, speed seems a bit slow (but I'm on a shared subscription) and I've already had two complete outages.

I didn't answer the poll as my experience was somewhere between easy and hard. I got on board with SY quite late and I think that searching for answers has become increasingly difficult because of the the rapidly increasing mine of information on bugs and workarounds and also the rapid increase in SY's functionality (which of course is to be applauded).

For those of us who have never interacted with CSS, I think that site setup is more difficult. For instance, I'll search for an answer to a problem and I'll find, "Yeah just copy and paste this code snippet after #*/php>" and I'm thinking "You what? I can't find anything remotely similar to #*/php> Where is it? Which page? How do I open the CSS to edit it? Child or parent theme? Or do I use phpadmin?". You get the picture.

This isn't a criticism of course, and it's no-one else's problem that I've never worked with CSS and WP. But looking for answers, whether in SY's excellent resources or elsewhere, does add considerably to the time taken to get the site working and looking good. In fact, I've put off any site customisation for now, for exactly this reason.

Doing this is fun though.

Hi Russell

Sorry to hear you have had problems with Justhost - I have not noticed any outages and found their customer support helpful (usually online "chat" but have actually rung them in the past)

You are not the only one new to css and php, the first time I was advised to change something in the child them I thought "what, how, where" then found the child them only to discover there was nothing in it to change which confused me even more.  Eventually I got there though using Firebug and the edit thingy in Chrome.  Usually have Chrome open to try and find the bits I want to edit and find it easier and more responsive than Firefox's Firebug

Site: http://www.emberstock.com
Host: Hostmonster
Results: Everything is working well, no issues. Hostmonster is very similar to Bluehost (I believe they're basically the same company really) so it's not a surprise that Hostmonster hosting works well with Symbiostock after all of the positive reviews of Bluehost for Symbiostock sites.

i'm using justhost for my sym site and have had excellent support - esp'ly after I mistakenly deleted my db one day!

1've used 1and1 for years for my other sites and for both these companies I've had great support -- I always call (I hate the slowness of chat) often at 2 am and have never had to wait more than a few minutes

Site: stockphoto.apduff.com
Host: HostGo.com
Results: Symbiostock installed and seems to work fine so far.  Still configuring the site, adding images and have not joined network as yet so that aspect is TBD.
Info: HostGo seems to be fine so far for hosting our Symbiostock site.  I did have to email their support team to make the php.ini changes needed to support uploading files bigger than 2MB.  There did not appear to be a php.ini anywhere in our filesystem that I could find and edit. They responded very quickly and implemented the desired changes and Symbiostock now seems to upload files >2MB fine now,

This is obviously the problem with shared hosting - you have no control over who you share with. I keep toying with the idea of the individual server (or at least a managed server where you have defined capacity, memory, processing and bandwidth. It is about $40 I think, which is certainly worth doing once I get a bit of traction. We can then have a series of threads about moving your Symbio site!

Steve
