I am with Bluehost. I am trying to ride out their problems, but even before that I was contemplating getting a dedicated IP. The cost is not that much. I've done some research, and the consensus seems to be divided on whether it will make your site run faster. I can see points on both sides and am willing to spend the extra $$ and test it myself. The jury is still out on the SEO benefits, too, but that isn't the reason I'm thinking of changing. It's more for the speed.

I was wondering if you others have any experiences or thoughts on this.

I'm on HostMonster and I've had various sites over the years with and without a dedicated IP address. I see no difference in site performance really.

In cases where I've gotten a dedicated IP it was more for protection from possibly nefarious actions by other sites on the server. Sharing an IP address with a site that is flagged for spamming, for example, could have a negative impact on your own site.

same here 0-- I've been with 1and1 for ages, and justhost just recently; mix of dedicated & shared - main reason i had a dedicated ip was when I was developing online games in ohio and we needed the extra security; otherwise never noticed any difference

Regarding speed which was one of my main requirements for getting a good host led me to hostgator.

I signed up with them a while ago and I'm more than pleased. Response time is really nice, haven't had much or any (?) downtime - at least I'm not aware of any.

Anyone can test it by checking my Symbiostock site at www.stockphoto-images.com

I feel my site runs faster than some Bluehost sites but maybe that's just a result of most of my site's data already being cached on my computer.

It would be good for me to hear from others then if they also see a difference in speed when accessing my site

Leo once stated that when traffic and the amount of visitors start creating too much noise for shared hosting, Hostgator would knock on my door suggesting to move over to a dedicated server but I'm still thousands of daily visitors away from this problem I guess...

Until then I'm not thinking of coughing up more $$$ just for the hosting of the site.

Apparently dedicated IP with bluehost will allow you to run scripts MUCH longer than what you can on "shared" IP.

Regarding the benefits of a dedicated IP (or a unique one) thats outdated info since so much of the web is "shared" hosting. So google doesn't care about your IP just because a spammer is using it too.

But like I said, for some reason a dedicated IP on bluehost allows your scripts to run much longer.

Also regarding the "noise" or over-use. Symbiostock is dealing kinder on your resources as of the latest versions, so thats helpful too. AJT figured out that one

What are longer scripts?
More complex programs or plugins on a website?

I believe Leo was talking about how long it takes for the script to run and display to the end user.

Thanks for the insights. I'm still weighing pros and cons. I would be more inclined to spend the money if I were seeing some sales, but maybe my time and money would be better spent on uploading more images, etc.

there's no benefit for SEO !

and for many keywords i see plenty of sub-domains or even blogs hosted on Blogspot/Blogger outranking established sites.

i've a couple personal sites on Blogspot and they rank very well, no idea why actually as i did nothing special SEO-wise.
