I'm totally open to suggestions. :)
Does anyone know a good and reliable service?

WiredTree is where I've got everything hosted (including this site). I've been happy with them

Wiredtree seems pretty good, but I could not find information how to do the hosting and values for service. I sent an email requesting more information.
thx

Here link with more details:

US$ 49 / month

I'll be starting with Bluehost just because I've been with them for years and not had any problems. I've also hosted a CMS account site and a Ktools site along with dozens of WordPress based sites with them successfully since 2005 ish so to me they've proved to be a great value! I believe packages start under $10 a month so if you have a smaller library/portfolio and don't mind shared hosting it's an option.
I'd stay away from GoDaddy (tons of horror stories from my clients and pretty much anywhere you look on the web, as well as personal bad experiences) and HostGator as they do not like hosting image sharing or selling sites anymore. I've heard from a few people it's actually in their Terms and Conditions now.
-
If you've got a huge portfolio which you know will sell, inmotion hosting (dedicated server) should pay for itself monthly...but you get all the perks plus you can host your friends as well.

I use Justhost for my personal site, a dog forum and a commercial site selling designer nail art. The only time there have been problems have been when I have caused them though trying to do things (that cannot always be done) and they have been very helpful at getting me put right again. Wordpress is easy to load there as is done though the control panel.
Previously I used streamlinenet - had various problems there.

I have a few sites on Gate.com I'm sure they have some referral program, but I'm not looking for that.
Reliable, good fair price, live support online and real humans who actually help you. I know more than one place where you get a bot answer or someone who answers something you didn't ask and the live support doesn't exist.
I had these people go fix an error folder I created, had them finding a problem with dns lookup (which wasn't their fault). I had configured my email wrong and they explained what it was supposed to be. Normal pricing for "unlimited" where most of them call it that but if you went berserk with page hits they might ask you about server use. Large storage. All the standard types and service compatibility.
They have never let me down on anything since I moved things to them. Now they do all my hosting.
-
I switched a while ago from S-t-a-r-t-l-o-g-i-c to Hostgator.
Found a coupon code online and got a fantastic deal for their "Baby Plan" (unlimited domains (hosting), disk space, databases and bandwidth).
Full, weekly backups are included if you have less than 100,000 files in your account.
The Baby Plan allows you to host up to 250,000 files.
This is some "weird" policy but this way Hostgator ensures optimal (shared) server performance. Users are not allowed to dump files online that just clutter the HDDs.
Support is native English speaking, friendly, extremely helpful and skilled ( so was my experience the last few times).
I am happy with them.

I've had a reseller account with HostGator for years. No major issues for me.

I'm also hosting on Bluehost and it's been pretty easy. I had set something up with them awhile ago in anticipation of another project but hadn't started it yet. Wordpress loaded up with no problems on the main domain but when I tried to upload to the add-on domain I added to my account for the Symbiostock project it wasn't loading. One quick call to customer service solved the problem. I was transferred almost immediately to a tech who did the install from his end and had me up and running in about 5 minutes.

@klsbear , @ruchos I am looking at bluehost at the moment and was wondering what package did you take? do we need the pro to run Symbiostock?
If there is a referral link let me know did you sign up yet:)
Cheers

I don't have a pro account and I don't think it's necessary right now though I'm no expert at this. I signed up over a year ago with the intent of using it for another project but that go stalled so I've had mine for awhile. It says my package is the Platinum Pack but in taking a quick look I didn't see reference to that anywhere other than in the stats. I see they have a sale for Easter weekend so that's a good deal. Thanks for the offer on using the referral link. I don't recall ever seeing them promote that and I couldn't find one but I do appreciate your asking.
-
Thanks for the quick reply:) I ll go for the normal then yes they have easter sale so I d better hurry:)
If needed I ll upgrade better
joining the club soon:)

i've used 1and1 for about 10 years for both MS windows/asp and linux/php accounts and they've always been able to help me do what i need to do. i'm stuck for the moment with the non-root problems so havent got symbiostock running yet but hope to shortly
-
I'm with 1and1 and am in trouble with my installation. I think I have finally got it to work with very small images (about 300K file size), but I think I am running up against the 60M of allocated PHP memory. I had to fiddle around with php.ini files in every directory to even get this far. So, not good news if you are with 1and1.
They have been fine on my other wordpress sites, but this one seems to need a lot more processing when you are putting the images up on the site.

Does anyone know if SmugMug works?
you cant use sym directly with your smugmug acct since it needs a separate database. you also can't run wordpress form the root directory of your smugmug domain

Thank you for the explanation. I will look into other hosting companies.

Has anyone any experience with Symbio and TSOHost? I'd rather use a Brit hosting company and they have a good rep in general.

Personally, I've only had a couple problems with godaddy (I've had up to four hosted simultaneously). The shared hosting is always a pain but, you'll find that with any of your cheaper hosting. They're a fair bit more expensive on renewals than what they're offering new customers (go figure, the cable company does that crap). But, a few years ago, after I'd been a customer for quite a while ... I had to switch to monthly payments, before they'd called me if the payment was overdue or whatever. It was the farthest thing from my mind as I was mainly focused on trying to survive, they deleted ALL of my content for ONE late payment ... It wasn't even a month late, it was only a week or so ... But, I'm still with them ... Mostly because it's a hassle to register somewhere else and try to figure out their site and whatever.
I jumped on this thread for one simple purpose, is it possible to install symbiostock but, keep most of my theming in place? Or would it be easier to apply symbiostock to a page and then child theme it to look like the main site? I highly doubt it's even beneficial for me to be considering this with my tiny port. But, it's only one more site and figured it was worth the ask ...

Since there are special features in the SY theme that make the networking SEO part of it work, it would be best to use the SY theme, then a child theme to make your modifications.

I'm about to set up a Synology disk station for backup and storage. The unit also has website hosting capabilities, so I want to know if this would be Symbio compatible?
See here for information on how it works:http://www.synology.com/en-global/support/tutorials/480
Thanks

You weren't affected by the outages earlier this year? There was a big outage over the summer: http://mashable.com/2013/08/02/bluehost-down/ (http://mashable.com/2013/08/02/bluehost-down/)
I'd actually advise against HostGator, BlueHost, and HoseMonster (all basically the same company, on the same servers) because of their outages. I'm on HostMonster still with a few sites, but I'm moving those sites off of HostMonster as soon as the current hosting term is up. I've had multiple outages with them, often lasting a day or more.

It lists WordPress as one of the tested apps, so that's a start :)
ImageMagick (http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php) as the image processor isn't listed, but can't see any reason it wouldn't work.
I'd suggest you see if you can find reports of other users successfully operating WordPress sites on this platform (what you wouldn't want is a trail of reports that it sort of works but this or that plugin doesn't). If that looks good, why not give it a try and let us know what happens?

I am installing the system anyway, for backup and storage, so I may as well give it a try. I don't really have much of a clue how to go about tit, but I have nothing to lose by trying. I'll let you know if it works!

I am thinking of signing up with Bluehost, just because others have done so and it seems cheap enough. What I don't understand are the host of optional extras listed - what do I need and what do I not need?
SiteLock Domain Security - $1.67 per month (Billed annually at $19.99/yr)
Site Backup Pro - $1.67 per month (Billed to end of hosting term)
Search Engine Jumpstart - $14.99 per year More information
Domain Whois Privacy - $9.99 per year HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
-
I haven't purchased any extras from them. Backup is important but I don't use theirs
-
I remembered about ktools hosting recommendations. I don't know how true they are and how much are influenced by various interests.

For playing around it might work and might be fun but isn't very practical in real world terms. The benefits you receive from renting space form a web host is
- MUCH BETTER internet line. Most internet connections don't have a very fast UP connection... down might be fast(ish) but up isn't very fast. Even if it is fast, it isn't going to compare to what a proper web host would offer.
- Up time - most web hosts would have a 99.9% up time. What happens when your power goes out, someone unplugs the server to do some vacuuming or it simply just crashes.
- Static IP ... not all ISP give out static ip's. There are work arounds but they are a big pain. If you have a dynamic IP address it will be a real head ache trying to host a server from your house
- Shared hosting is actually pretty smart. A bunch of people are essentially getting together, buying a speedy server (a machine made especially for the task) and splitting the costs.
- +++ a few more arguments I haven't thought of...

I'm with Bluehost too, no extras purchased. So far no problems, and they're very helpful...with the live chat I get someone who fixes things within a couple of minutes, even when it's an issue with WordPress and not with Bluehost.

I've been happy with BlueHost too. Their service has always been quick, courteous, and effective. My down time last summer was minimal, and none since.

Thanks Leaf for all your comments. I don't really know what I am doing, and it is a lot to take onboard but, as you say - it may be fun to play around and I will certainly learn from the experiment. I can always get my site set up and, if it's really difficult to impossible to self-host, sign up with a hosting company some time down the line.
I'll let you know how I get along :)

anyone knows if i can get penalized for uploading 30gb of photos to Bluehost ? i'm currently using my pc to host for my website that is running one k-tools photostore. hosting at home proves too much hassle with a lot of technical issues. thinking of migrating to symbio
