Title: Network Info: What To Share and See. IDEAS
Post by: Leo Blanchette on April 17, 2013, 21:28
Please list ideas. When you set up your network, a lot of info will be fetched. Both by the central site (as a database for people to seek out network buddies) and site-to-site in sharing results and other things.

Please add a list of things that you'd like to have available to network.

Can be practical or fun.

For instance:

1. Images in Portfolio.
2. Location of operation.
3. Photographer/illustrator/whatever.
4. Likes Koi fish more than puppies...

Please make a nice long thread of ideas. In the end we'll have plenty of practical things, fun, SEO bonuses...you name it. Networking will be the most powerful feature right beside SEO and hopefully independence...so have fun with this one.

When all is done, I will have a huge data-entry page.

Also you will be able to "tick" what you share and don't share, be it simple or more valuable information.

Hmm, I like that it's optional. I think I'd like to see networked results open in a new window so the user doesn't leave my site.

I like having a central list too, to find people to link to. And see who links to me (also optional).

I wonder, would it be possible to link to another user's specific categories? Since some 'togs have a wide range and all.... just a thought.

I like the idea of having a symbio database -- accessible from 'registered' sym bio site owners - each person can list he info they want to share:

network links  ( we can then create a graph of links)
major emphasis (travel, people, business, model released, vectors, etc, etc)
  portfolio size
  search preferences (similar or complementary)

we have a start on this with the network page
http://cascoly.com/symbiostock-network.asp (http://cascoly.com/symbiostock-network.asp)

each site can decide on how it wants to network -- for me, i'd like to find a network of similar sites - if I don't have what a user wants i'm happy to pass them on to other sites that have that content; the network depends on a symbiotic attitude that keeps the user in our network.  others may want only to link to sites that don't compete with what they offer

Thats right you were the first one to start indexing this stuff.

network links  ( we can then create a graph of links)
major emphasis (travel, people, business, model released, vectors, etc, etc)
  portfolio size
  search preferences (similar or complementary)

-- Keep having ideas like that. Whether of statistical, SEO, search, or just fun value...just run with it.

The main site will use tons of it in populating info pages about your site, your network will utilize it, and individual items (or sets of items) will be turned off or on based on your desire to share or not.

Network results will not always be limited to 5, and they might function in different ways depending on search or place on the page.

I think Cascoly nailed it. I'm looking for sites that are similar or complimentary. I dont mind sharing and competing. The better the network, the easier it'll be to get repeat customers to all of our sites.

I'd like to be able to update my info as needed, so some functionality would be good.

Yep. Very important some social media visibility and some level of integration.

If this is going into a Symbiostock directory - info on the directory site I would like to see.

Site name + Logo
Brief description
Category - travel, lifestyle, food, illustration etc...
Portfolio size
Last updated - eg, 100 pics added in the last 30 days. Let customers know which sites are alive and which ones are dormant
Price range xsmall $1 - Xlarge $30 - whatever is set by users
Network size - totalled on the 5 slots

Rating - this site has 7 likes or +'s

Follow on Twitter, Google+, Facebook etc

See sample of featured images - click to preview 5 or so random featured images (thumbs).

I think instead of a ratings I'd prefer a comments field for customers. Ratings don't really give a reason why a site may be good or bad and can be trolled too easily.

Here's a million dollar pointer customers would choose sy over agencies if it were made fun for them similarly. Sy is like how one might choose farmers market over conventional supermarket. There must be ways to make it worth the trip in surprises and other interesting gimmicks. Perhaps there is a way to involve them too. At this point think outside of the box

I'm currently pitching to my potential SY customer base about supporting a small business. Luckily I know many of the people I pitch to, so I'm hopeful it'll pay off.

is there an easy way to let us play with how the networked searches are done?  right now, you use the list of 5 we provide -- can you change this so it takes that list from somewhere we have control?  eg, search would use a separate list that is populated from the network list by default; but I would be able to enter a different list instead.

this would allow us to play with different strategies without you having to program each one

One of the things I'm looking forward to the most is network. That will be the funnest part of everything.

If possible though I want to know any remaining bugs to fix for a bit longer before I start expanding things again, and I have to improve search more.

Lowest and highest price recorded.
Network size: If I have 100 pics and my 5 networked Symbio buddies have 100 pics each, network size would be 600.

They can't be trolled if it's a positive rating, "like" and nothing else, either the site has blank likes or a number of likes.

I like the idea of having lots of positive comments on my listing, but the internet can be a loony magnet. Comments will have to be policed, who will approve the comments? Unfortunately they have a tendency to attract spam.

I am not too sure about the value of likes and/or positive comments at all. Do they really convince an image buyer to buy a particular image? Maybe it's good for SEO. I don't have clue. I definitely don't want to police comments for spam and trolling. But I'd have no trouble dealing with a few more tick-boxes (if necessary), so everyone can decide for their own.

A wikianswers person tipped me off that comments were very valuable.

If a page grows in content, google keeps coming back to see whats new. If you have an education image, and someone comments that they want to use it for their "school, a project...and I have these questions..." it also improves semantic aspects, with the search engine recognizing this is more likely an image having to do with education on a given subject, and no doubt you get scores for interesting content as well. The reward in the end is more exposure to the properly targeted audience - thus the power of comments.

...if we can work out styling them better and making them more subtle- then maybe more people will be happy to include them.

In fact I've wanted to comment on quite a few images I've seen - and no doubt network buddies might want to do that sort of thing to help eachother.

Depending on how far you webmasterly people want to go, there are some nice books on the subject of SEO.

Just thinking out loud here, so forgive if what I say is dumb.

Just relating Sym to FAA. If I go and make comments about someone's artwork, they get a record of that on their page, so the page has grown in content, so Google goes back to see what's new. That person then says thanks, which is more content, and if I'm lucky they come and comment on my image, which makes my page grow, and I say thanks, so my page grows more, and Google comes back, and all this improves the ranking of my image on FAA website but at the same time improves the Google rank of FAA. Is that correct?

If that's correct, then the more we comment on each others work on our Sym sites, then the higher we will rank on Google.

FAA also have a busy forum - does that help SEO? If so, should we find a way to make all this talk on MSG help the ranking of Sym, maybe by moving the Sym forum to Sym.com? Or is it better for now to have the chat here to encourage others to set up on Sym?

You have the general idea. And the more social your site is, the better it will do.

I won't be moving forum stuff to symbiostock.com, although they can be used - the theory in having it here was to let the idea grow right in the middle of its target audience (microstock contributors) which was very helpful to the Symbiostock project, and also helpful in making yet another reason to visit MSG (we might call that the first Symbiotic relationship that started the whole thing :D )

Can we make them way more discrete on the image pages - they're a touch shouty :-)

Yep! They are completely prototype and unstyled. Unclassy.

Does someone want to donate a little time to the project and maybe get those looking good?

I'll admit, I haven't read this whole post so I've probably missed a lot, but if comments are included, perhaps it can be visible, and commentable, only to registered users? Would Google SEO still like it then?

Would spammers bother to register to annoy and troll? Some will, but most wouldn't. And making them invisible in the first place, until you are registered, would not even alert anyone to the presence of comments with the intent to spam.

Just a thought.

Either way we get to decide to turn them on or off, so at least we all get what we want.

They would be publically visible. Think of flickr and such. But of course you can turn them off. Just another measure some people might want depending on how they do things.

My past experience with a WP blog was that the majority of spam comments were held for review and that almost all of them were posted to the "about" page which may help keep spam from finding it's way to individual image pages.  You can also manage all comments from your dashboard so you don't have to go image to image to review or delete comments.

For the main network, I would like to have my information stored on my site.

Basically I am lazy, and if I have to remember to make updates to yet another site where I have to try and remember username and password....

Truthfully I would likely keep this network updated but it would be easier ( cooler) if the network did it itself.

Registered users helps keep out the trolls who want to come to seek attention and disrupt. It's like a lock on a shed. Keeps the honest people from temptation, but won't stop someone who's determined to break in. Registration reduces the "drive by posting" of spammers and trolls. Nothing eliminates it.

Nice bunch of ideas.

If image count in network really means something, that's entertaining. Or it could just mean, one group with 600 photos is much more discerning that some other group with 5000 dupes? Price doesn't really say anything about quality? You can buy cheap junk lighting from China on eBay, free shipping too. Or you can pay hundreds for established well constructed quality.

Comments? Every read the reviews of products on Amazon or review sites? What do you get? Either paid praise shills or disgruntled owners who didn't like what they bought. The 98% happy people in the middle, don't bother.  ;D  Peer review, only SY site managers. Nice we can run around slapping each other on the back and saying how wonderful we are, but no buyers will use that as a basis for downloading.

Let me ask, what useful or honestly functional purpose does site review, artist review or image rating have for a sales site? If you want this for the social networking aspects, I'd agree 100%. If it's for more sales or potential customers, Zero.

agreed -- it's also a question of where you expect traffic to come from -- people who find us by way of their specific keyword search on google are less likely to be influenced by comments

I did have a comment yesterday from someone who actually took time to write a relevant comment (about anchovies!) before adding a link to their less relevant site

I will have images on my site that I would not send to an agency, mostly because I know the agency would reject them.
for example http://stockimages.glennspecht.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/symbiostock_rf_content/1385-sunset-on-pacific-coast-of-ecuador.jpg (http://stockimages.glennspecht.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/symbiostock_rf_content/1385-sunset-on-pacific-coast-of-ecuador.jpg)

would be rejected because I don't have a release or the child's name.

I am not sure if this is wise or not, but we will see in time what works and what doesn't

Exactly! I have set aside a bunch of images to sell RM mainly because they are so niche that their potential of a few purchases must reel in more than pennies. However, I never got around putting them on Alamy or signing up with other RM agencies.

So now I am thinking about putting them on my SY site with a premium RF price tag. Seeing how fast SY is developing there's even a chance that Leo has some RM selling option integrated before I even finish uploading all my other stuff.

SY is definitely the place to experiment and just try things especially when the buyers start dropping by...

Yes, a while back I have suggested this solution, too. I can see, however, that Leo's priorities will focus on other areas such as search, and networking first. But I sure hope we can have this built in, eventually...

back before ebay banned digital products, I had some success selling small collections of images and i'm playing with these in SY http://cascoly-images.com/pix/image/horses-and-buffalo-collection/ (http://cascoly-images.com/pix/image/horses-and-buffalo-collection/)

i'm pricing these low as the market for these is not the professional designer and the competition is all the free images available.  at least I n the beginning I expect most traffic to SY sites to come thru SEO, not from regular buyers.  so it's the same impulse purchase as browsing kindle & picking up an interesting book for $2.99 when $9.99 would make me hesitate

haven't yet decided how much of my smugmug site i'll bring over to SY -- smugmug has a lot more options for prints and other merchandise without being swamped like zazzle,so i'm working to crosslink these 2 sites along with my more descriptive cascoly.com site and cascoly.hubpages.com

We will be putting some things only on SY, mainly things that we think will sell only in small numbers so not worth putting on the micros.

Also, our micro income is not growing, another reason for not putting everything there. Only our macro sites are slowly increasing.

We are looking at SY as a long term project, and we will gradually add more niche subjects, especially things that can't easily be copied.

I need to resurrect this thread - and to whoever is tuned in, Symbiostock or not - we need some quick advice:

I need some "social/professional" settings for symbiostock. Not privacy invasive stuff, or "looking for women/men" but professional.

For instance, a dropdown select:

Profession: Illustrator/Artist/Marketing/Etc.
Portfolio focus (text) ... user enters "cars, business, etc"

And more.

Make it social and interesting. I'll be working on it tonight. :D It will show up in your network results.

I don't see too much relevance in info like Gender, Software, and Equipment.

I am missing:

Open for assignment jobs: Yes/No
For the travelers among us:
temporary location1: City/Country from: date to: data
temporary location2: City/Country from: date to: data

yes, a short list of subjects would be useful for finding same or complementary searches -- list should be standardized so everyone uses the same terms

from our current member list here's a start
travel
people
vectors  (all others can be assumed to be photos)
illustrations
maps
cartoon
nature
editorial
landscape
food
lifestyle
backgrounds
industry

for searching automatically, site owner can designate same or complementary, and can choose appropriately from the list

other info to collect -- this can go to a log file, not the main database;  who sends trasffic to whom, keywords searched on  -- members can then search the log files and adjust their settings, etc

for searching automatically, site owner can designate same or complementary, and can choose appropriately from the list

other info to collect -- this can go to a log file, not the main database;  who sends trasffic to whom, keywords searched on  -- members can then search the log files and adjust their settings, etc

Make this list BIGGER. :D I added mascot series since those are a big part of microstock culture. If you can think of any more "microstock culture" specialties, let me know.

And

Miscellaneous
Other

:)

if this is for the network searching we wouldn't want an 'other' category, since it would return all other sites, but wouldn't be content specific -- eg, a 'complementary' network search would return others with 'travel' or 'animals' if you have those, while a 'different' search would skip those

You are right, so:

medicine & health
technology
transport
signs &  symbols
business & finance
flowers & plants
education
tools & accessories
holidays
sport
events

and maybe separate category

isolated on white

Um - wao!

Although it might seem highly impractical - maybe there is a pre existing taxonomy system out there that covers a huge amount of subjects?

we're starting to confuse 2 different 'category' lists here -- one is already there for images and can be made as detailed as anyone wants

the one we were discussing here is to be used to match (or not) with other network sites, so the categories should be more generic -- i'd include flowers under 'nature', eg - more like the list of topics that people are giving for the network pages

+1 cascoly
Only parent category, otherwise the list becomes useless. At this point a botanist can easily put a lot of pages between Latin and common names. We don't need a CV in this case.

I've developed a deep rooted allergy for categories from dealing with the useless info some micro sites need to have for every single image.  >:( >:( >:(

Here is how I understand this: It is one categorization per SY site  ;D - Really, I think I can deal with that: Once, I'd go through the whole category list and tick every category item that I've photos that fit in. Maybe even with options like "well covered", "so-so"", "just a few"... Some advanced future system might be even be able to do that by query the "image"-keywords.  When I have done my shooting and uploaded a brand new killer batch  ;D I'd come back and tick a new "site"-category. Done! Not too bad, I think.

And here's my understanding on how my "not too-hard" categorization work would be used: A detailed category taxonomy on a per site NOT per image level would open doors to an extremely powerful search and networking tool. This list contains now for a certain (sub-)category all sites that cover it with images. It could be available, regularly updated and synchronized over the SY network on every single SY site. Buyers can search within those categories and get useful results because the SY system knows now which sites in the network to look up and display results from. Buyers can just "browse" the network (hop from site to site) guided by this list that always shows the top x SY sites that cover a chosen category featuring a number of y images automatically found with the "site"-category term used as a "image"-keyword search. - This could rock!!! :o

The category taxonomy I imagine should be detailed enough so that at the end of its many tree-like branches an average number of z links to Symbiostock sites can be found that have images falling under the corresponding specific category. It should be still coarse enough that we could display a meaningful "site"-category cloud on our SY sites that inspires our buyers to look for something they weren't even dreaming about.

The parameters of x, y, and z need to be determined by site performance, network (search) performance, manageability of (search) results to display, ...

If done right this will be a blast!

Here is how I understand this: It is one categorization per SY site  ;D -

I have the same aversion top categories in agencies, since their categories have hundreds ofthousands of images

here, though, i'd see > 1 category per site, since most sites will cover more than 1-- but limited to some small number

what you suggest for network searching is what should start to become available; similar fine searches can be done with keywords, though  not sure yet how performance will be affected. (the number of images on each site for each keyword is already stored)

if keywords per site were collected, there'd be a 'last updated' field that would maintain a fairly fresh database, by sending queries whenever a site had some free time to process

Is this something the clients are going to see or will it just be the site owners?  Is it something that is going to be fully visible from our own sites or available on the hub site (is the hub site something that will control everything else  and what everyone sees and who will control that and how does it work ?  )

I do not think I am  following this very well (I absorb things much better when I can see them than when I try and read them)

all the above - mostly because it's still in design phase!  here are my ideas:   have the info available to all site owners who participate in the network, through their admin page.  the info collected to be stored in a central site somewhere (I can host, eg,  if Leo decides it's not appropriate to keep in on symbiostock.com)  there needs to be some control for the design and writing to the db, but everyone should be able to access it for reports.  some reports will be supplied as requested, and others can write their own using MySQL

Leo's adding some features already to network search that we had originally thought would be extras.  a lot will depend on processing times & size of network -- eg, the sort of search by keyword analysis outlined above would porobably need an external db, not access to every network site;  should become a lot clearer after the next release

So I am in & I like it, SY helps me to merge few Ideas I already got, but had no time to create something as massive as Leo did. Thanks a lot !
My site is not yet enabled for sales, cause first I need to see the traffic numbers and polish it a bit.

So Leo if You still need some ideas on networking, I am going to point them out to be short

- unlimited network slots
- 5 (less or more) used for random selection while searching
- favorite sites in network (tick). 1/2 of them used in search or only favorites
- moving slow sites to the bottom (optional) - performance timing could be reset after few hours (stored on each SY site ofc)
- allow to publish the SY favorite sites or the whole list in a widget, post or page through the easy [shortcode] for example (then [show ALL] could jump one by one and add to the TOTAL listing )
- show network hits from other sites (numbers or popular phrases, countries - depends on the load)

Well... I am dreaming sometimes ;)

That's all for now, best regards to all SYMBIOstockers
