I've just realized, that networking may be very dangerous :)
Let's suppose, that in the future, hundreds (or thousands) of Symbiostockers decide to put the same site into their network. For that site it may quickly "eat" all server resources, resembling DoS attack :)

Ok, so Sean Lock or Yuri (thats it, right?) - not allowed to use Symbiostock. Problem solved.

:D

I could easily work in a two-way verification for connections. I'll keep that in mind.

Oh and there are two scenerios I know of where that would really become a problem:

1. Symbiostock is now a huge community and by some stupidity on my part that problem was not solved ahead of time

2. A search engine bot is crawling multiple site's archive pages, which all share a common network member, and that is causing a huge number of network requests due to the crawling speed.

Just an FYI though I have not put a lot of work into my site, clipartillustrations.com, but I am seeing traffic from the network, although search engines are not sending much yet. What that tells me: Networking is HUGELY beneficial after all. Big discovery in traffic generation.

I examined server log file and there are much more network search entries, than direct :)

Can you explain that? You mean there are more searches being done by your network connections than users? Either way thats good right?

Yes. Only few visitors searching on my site, but many network searches and of course it is very good :)

a DOS attack needs hundreds OF thousands or millions of hits, coordinated persistently over time -- a few thousand links that are occ'ly searched wont matter.  and a search bot, unless it spawns many others would also be only one instance

when running my online games i'd routinely have hundreds of users each day with no effects from the server -- each time a player did anything, their session would process a few of the tasks waiting for update, so there was never one massive update.  any given search on a database is also going to be efficient

one interesting test would be to time the search for a variety of keywords over the database of sites.  the problem with many many symbio sites is that users may not want to wait for the results, but doing 5 - 10 at a time and reporting the results isn't going to overload anything

I'm designing in a few things to make it faster. One of the changes is that if the site does not respond within a certain (micro) timeframe, the page will load without it, then retrieve the results with an ajax-loading prompt much like you see when you click page results on network buddies remotely.

I am wondering about having networks based on content.

As an example my site might fit into the "nature and travel" network, but not the "lifestyle and business" network.

This could be a way for the niche sites to network and market themselves.

Glenn

BTW I have some out going networks, but I don't have any incoming ( I think)  does someone want to test my site to make sure it works?  http://stockimages.glennspecht.com/wp/

Hey guys, I've been too busy chasing bugs ... I need some two-way networks. At this time... well...whoever wants to. Just search my stuff and see if it complements yours.

here are my current 5 - i'm trying to stay in the same general area,  figuring most people are going to find my site at first thru google, so if I don't have what they need i'll pass them on to someone with similar

Please, i have a question:

- Network search only have results if my SY partner have a link back for my site?

ex: have a stompstock as part of my network, but stompstock doesn't have me as part of your network. So, if i search for "golf", which is a subject absent of my site but present in stompstock site, it will produce no results? To produce results, my site needs to be part of stompstock symbiostock network, right?

hitvectors (link) stompstock
stompstock (not link) hitvectors
NO RESULTS

hitvectors (link) stompstock
stompstock (link) hitvectors
RESULTS OK

No - the results from the network are independent of whether they have your site as one of the network links. Try searching for a keyword where there is a match on your site. It should all work

Not works. I put your site in my network and did a search for "animal" (2 results in my and 49 in your site), but only results of my site are showed.

By the way, SY network is "activate".

Are you entering the phrase in the search box - ie animals, not just looking for the category. By the way, I don't have any tags called "animals". I do have tags for "animal"

I probably should add that keyword to my cat pictures!!

steve

EDIT - sorry - I misread your post - you searched for animal, my mistake

Chico - just tried the search on your site - I see what you mean. So what is wrong, I wonder...

Steve

Edit: I just added your site as one of my network. When I search animal I see my one and your two when I enter the search on my own site. When I go to your site, I don't see any network results.

I did a search for "old" also. 49 results in your.

Deactivate and reactivate theme and nothing. Put others SY sites to fill all 5 slots and nothing.

Funny.

If my images are configured to "exclusive"... it will produce no results in network search?

Well I see them when I search in my site - so that isn't stopping them from appearing in a network search from outside

ok, thanks...

I'm a bit lost. Everything seems fine, but only my site give me results. Nothing comes from SY network, but others receive results from my site. Looks like some firewall issue... i don't know.

I had that issue at first and leo suggested I delete the network urls and re-enter them. I did and then it worked. Not sure why but maybe worth a try?
